Star Wars Trilogy SE bluray color regrade (a WIP)

I very much doubt that the look of Tatooine is because of fading.

from this article: http://www.wilhelm-research.com/pdf/HW_Book_10_of_20_HiRes_v1c.pdf :

“Based on the many Technicolor imbibition prints he has
examined in recent years, Robert Gitt of the UCLA film archives had this to say about the image stability of the process: If you took a Technicolor dye imbibition print and you projected it many times at a drive-in theater and put a lot of light through it, the dyes do fade a little bit — particularly the cyan — although not that badly. But if you are careful with Technicolor imbibition prints, and keep them in the dark and don’t show them a lot, they don’t seem to fade at all. I’ve never seen one that has faded if properly cared for. It is a remarkably good process. Technicolor imbibition on triacetate base is very, very good.”

Of course, the process itself can be (and was in the case of Star Wars) uneven in terms of color across shots, but I highly doubt that every shot is wrong. For example, many shots in the Death Star are simply too green, but among these incorrect shots are shots where the color is accurate, and it’s easy to tell the difference. With Tatooine, you say that every shot has these issues, so there are no shots where you can get a good idea of what it should look like on the print. I know that there are Tatooine shots without the pink shift, so my recommendation would be to simply take the most color accurate shot of Tatooine you have (the one that most matches the actual shooting conditions and/or other reference photos) and work from that as a basis for the correction - it’s what I’ve done with the Death Star interiors.

Very interesting information from that link…thanks for it.

I find that TN1’s Silver Screen Edition, is a really decent gauge for how SW looked in the theaters in '77. It isn’t anywhere near perfect, and it’s a bit grainier than it should be, but it’s a good reference to build on.

Also, would you care to show us some comparison screenshots of those Death Star interiors? Perhaps this one from DeEd 2.5:

And from SSE:

There are probably better ones.

“I’ve finished this scene in my version, and the yellow is actually gone from entire shots (if you notice, the flowers in the lower left are supposed to be yellow as well). It’s a problem with hundreds of shots of the blu-ray, which means that I’ve had to pull these colors from other sources since they simply no longer exist in the blu-ray.”

And what did your shots of this scene look like, my we see?

I think most of your edited images in recent posts, look good DrDre. However, I thought this one of Obi-Wan, looked like his cloak had a bit too much green in it, so I adjusted that, and I upped the saturation just a bit.

The original:

opinions?

I’m currently only on a semi-calibrated monitor. But I thought the cloak looked okay before and your change has brought some reds into the shadows and face that don’t look quite right.

In fact, given Dre’s previous comment about R2 (which I agree with), your calibration might be a bit on the cool side, masking some of these pink effects (and increasing the greens you’re seeing)?

Agreed… dlvh, your redo gives obi-wan a kind of “hot orange” face on my monitor.

WOW…i just went to my other monitor, that has much better colors, and I see what you guys are saying.

Thanks much for the input fellows…I will get this fixed here soon.

For those who are interested, today I will be muxing an mkv of the 1981 version of the film to post on the spleen. In case you want that version, but not necessarily the whole disc with all the bells and whistles.

It is as most of you know based on Towne32’s regrade as a base with a few select scenes and sequences regraded by me and my 1981 crawl/flyover spliced into the beginning.

Sounds interesting.

Please let us know when it’s up there, will you?

I want to thank you personally Mike, for spending so much of your time and money on this project. We can only imagine what has gone into this project. The video clips I have seen of your work, have simply astonished me. The tiniest imperfections that will go by inside of a second on screen, have been given the most scrupulous attention to detail, and then some.

However, I have a question … what if the powers that be at Disney and FOX, say NO, we aren’t interested? What will happen to this masterpiece? Will it ever come to be seen by anyone but you…and maybe your close friends? Will you release it a little bit at a time Mike, or what? I hate to think of it…but I had to ask.

I’ve got to believe Disney will acquire this from you after hearing, and seeing what has gone into this, and I believe they’ll employ you to complete ESB and ROTJ as well, and perhaps even other projects in the future, if you and they come to an agreement.

Regardless of what happens, Thank you for the 15+ years, you have put into this. From what I have seen of it, it is truly amazing!
