I think that Seagate is recovering the data for free since it is their fault.

From what I read, Seagate STARTED doing it for free...and then stopped.  They probably realized what a HUGE problem it was and said "no more." I couldn't even get a live person on the phone when I tried calling last week.  I didn't want to wait longer and risk the data no longer being there.

Thanks for the info.  I dunno what I can do now.  i suppose email them and tell them of my situation?  They're not going to reimburse me, I'm sure.

Yeh, there's a huge problem with Seagate drives. Not sure if this will help at all

http://forums.slizone.com/lofiversion/index.php?t33993.html

Yup.  That's what happened.  If it's bricked, it's bricked.  You can't flash the firmware if you can't get any bios ANYWHERE to recognize it. :(

Anyway...hopefully after $600 +/-, I'll get my stuff back. :(

The firmware is NOT on the platters. Doesn't sound like they know what they're doing...maybe get someone else.

Yes it is.  Check out any thread about the Seagate 500gb drives.  I can give you the version # when I get home.  All of the drives from that line are crapping out.  :(  Here's a link with info: http://forums.slizone.com/lofiversion/index.php?t33993.html

Anyway...it was sent off.  $600 if they can fix it.  Waiting to hear back.  It arrived there yesterday.

Is anyone still seeding the Making of Raiders/TOD/Crusade and great stunts materials? My searches have come up empty. I used to have some of it but had a HDD crash a while back and lost what I had.

Thanks,

Rook

I will be re-doing my discs for those documentaries.  I did newer captures (from the laserdiscs) and I'll be putting extra material on there to fill out the dual-layer discs.

Yeah i've tried booting without the card reader in there already but thanks for the tip. :)

Trust me, I'm going to try every option possible however, I've talked to a friend who knows a lot about these drives and he says they're NOTORIOUS for having a firmware problem.  I'm going to contact Seagate today and see if they'll be any help.   it's worth a shot, no?

Like I said, the biggest problem is that I've had 2 computers that completely won't acknowledge that there's a drive hooked up to them.  That's the biggest issue here. :(

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

yes, a HD version would be the ideal, but lets face it we have to be realistic here. No professional transfer house will touch this with a barge pole. Even a DVD version will still be better than what we have now: the GOUT.

Well, obviously it's not something we'd be able to do in the open.  Personally, I think we've talked about this far too much out in the open as it is.  We'd just have to find someone who knew someone who knew someone...and go from there.

We'd also need someone who lives in a major city that would have something like this available to them.

And nyc, the capture is/would be the same (if I read it right on what is being done) so if the reel messed up during the capture it would make no difference if it was for an SD or HD project....cause if theyre using a modded scanner, then the scans are gonna be in HD

I'm not talking about the actual scan process.  I'm saying something stupid happening like a reel being lost...or torn...or someone spilling something on it.  There are any number of things that can screw up when these prints are handled.

I'd hate to be the party pooper but...damn.  SD only is a serious bummer.  DVD is so ridiculously backwards.  My interest in this just dwindled to nil.

Don't think that i don't appreciate the time and effort of those involved but is it really worth it for just a DVD version?

Shouldn't we wait to do the real "work" when the job can be done properly and the best that it can?  What if something happens to one of the reels on an SD-only project?  Wouldn't it seem like an "all for nothing" situation if it were ruined for a DVD?

Just my thoughts.  I dont' mean to offend.

So....I've got some potentially devastating news.  The Indy 4 discs may never happen.

Last night...I turned on my desktop PC to do a favor for a friend.

Guess what?

Dead.

I either get a flashing curser or a note that says "bootable disc not found."

I went inside the computer and I don't hear any problems with the drive. it's spinning up. I'm not hearing any clicking. But I'm guessing something went wrong somewhere.

The only thing I can figure out is that I had a usb card reader plugged in when I turned it on, although I don't know how that would affect it.

I tried a hard drive enclosure and, although I can still hear the drive speed up normally, I never get any sign that it's showing up.

So now it's off to data recovery.  I got a quote of $590 for everything...if I decide to go with it. :(  This was the explanation of what they think happened:

Your hard drive most likely has firmware corruption. Typically the drive spins up fine, doesn't click but never show up in the system or shows up with 0 capacity. It's a very common problem with Seagate's new 7200.11 family - we receive several requests a week with this issue. Data recovery in such case requires use of specialized equipment and experience to access firmware on the platters and repair corrupted modules.

So now I have to decide which place to send it to.  I'd just like to know if it's there or not.

In other news, I've ordered two new drives from Newegg and they should be here tomorrow, I would assume.  I'm going to buy a program that will clone my OS drive and install both of them.  That way, if this should happen again, I'll be covered.

Let this be a lesson, boys and girls.....

You're one sick fuck, you know that? The GIRL is half your age, you perverted sick bastard. You should be ashamed of yourself. You're old enough to be her father.

And yes you have some nerve coming back, and you keep babbling on about how sad your life is so that we'll all understand and feel sorry for you...jeez get a life.

Wow.  Someone needs to relax.  What he's doing is not illegal or immoral.  Let's not judge.  We should all be so lucky to find love in our lives at any time...regardless of when.

It's really odd because I was JUST thinking about negative the other day.

Star Wars Saga on Blu-ray (a joint venture project)

Just an Idea, but because the German broadcast were about 17gb in size, adding any more bitrate to them to fill a BD-25 would be pointless. But why not drop the bitrate slightly so each episode comes to about 14-15GB with audio and you could to 2 BD-50 - one for each trilogy with 3 films on each. You really won't see a difference in quality between a 15gb & a 17GB version and this could be a great way to present them as 2 trilogies

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with this.  BD blanks are still ridiculously expensive for just the BD-25's ($5-10).  BD-50's are astronomical.   I'm not looking to spend $30 on a coaster.

No; I'm pretty sure it hasn't.  It's still on alt.binaries.starwars though.

Signing up for newsgroups is well worth it and easier than it seems.  You could grab all three AVCHDs and ANHR PAL DVD 9 to boot, along with some other lovely items, such as dark_jedi's wonderful anamorphic versions of the original trilogy.  Just a thought!  :-)

Thanks but an extra expense and trouble that's not needed.  I'll just patiently wait for the eventual torrent or find a kind soul to send me a copy.

Finally grabbed Ep 1. The compression artifacts seem extra bad in this one :(. It almost looks like dvd! Shame, as the colour correction is great. I can never decide which versions to watch, the original german broadcasts are miles ahead quality wise but the german crawls are damn annoying!

Episode 1?  Holy shit.  I hadn't realized it had been "released."
