Star Trek Into Darkness Bonus disc (Released)

Ahhh, I just discovered something I wasn't aware of -- The enhanced commentary isn't "just" commentary!

I was under the impression it was merely an audio track that lined up with the original movie timing, much like most movie's commentary tracks. However, it's actually an "interactive" movie, so to speak, with the commentators pausing the movie and drawing/diagramming things on the screen. So it wouldn't really be feasible to strip merely the audio track and fuse it into the original bluray rip.

Unless anyone has any ideas, I guess this means we just have to keep the two separate movies? I've wondered if perhaps there's some trickery possible of "fusing" the two tracks of video, so that you can have the option of watching the commentary-edition and have it actively inject the commentary clips of movie-pausing and diagramming. But I imagine something like this wouldn't be possible, or at least feasible.

That's why it's called an "enhanced" commentary and why everyone is upset that it wasn't included. :) And, like I said, you have to re-encode the whole thing in order to burn.

Okay, we get it, he pissed you off. He may have even been rude.

But really, he didn't have to release a single thing, could have kept it completely to himself.

I think it is sometimes forgotten here that no-one 'owes' anyone anything, if someone wants to buy a rare movie or disc and video themselves eating it, that is their pergogative.

Anyone here could have ponied up the $700 themselves if they thought it was important enough.

It has been stated multiple times here that a high quality capture will be made, that it is not easy to do due to the state of the disc, and that it will be shared for *free* when it is done. I think that is a pretty good deal that someone spent $700+ of their own cash and is going to share it with everyone for nothing. All one has to do is wait.

Here's the thing: I've never said that he SHOULD or that we DESERVE to get this. In fact, I'm pretty pissed off that it fell into such irresponsible and fame-seeking hands.

And, since you brought it up, had I known about it, I would have dropped a helluva lot more than $700 on that disc. I've spent a lot more on a lot less. It is easily worth 3 to 4 times that amount. Had the seller known what he had, he could have taken care of this Christmas AND next Christmas.

Although you state that it will be shared, that is not what the original purchaser said. Unfortunately, I'm going to go with what HE has publicly stated until I have reason to believe otherwise.

But...C'est la vie...

We all have bad days. Perhaps the admins were just tired from dealing with the immense sense of entitlement that people seem to have; "gimme gimme gimme". I'm excited about this project, and I want the footage too. However, I recognize that 1) its a work in progress, and 2) it's not my disc.

It seems that the only payment the archivists expect is patience, why not give it to them?

Absolutely. As someone who has done many of his own releases, I understand how (sometimes) annoying can be. However, this isn't about patience. This person "released" it on youtube and insinuated that that was enough.

While I'm glad to hear that Lucasfilm, Disney or whoever hasn't interfered as yet, it may not be wise to post something like this on a very public place like facebook, where every idiot imaginable can whine and complain, pester the owner, try to cause trouble, etc.

Plus just the general level of attention it draws. Remember, things on this board are kept low profile for a reason, and with something of this rareness and importance (scenes, alternate takes and angles, etc., that might not exist anywhere else outside of Lucasfilm's archives), it's not a good idea to take chances. Just get it into the hands of those who can be trusted, in both the first pass rough and later high quality capture forms, and the rest will take care of itself...

My point exactly. What a dumbass move. What exactly did the buyer expect to gain out of this? fame? fortune? The only thing it could lead to is trouble.

So the fool who made the facebook page is pissy because I asked for an actual download link instead of a crappy youtube link.

Anyone else want one? Clearly he's not someone who cares about actual quality.

what is with the attitude? You know that these were quick and dirty captures, with a lot of problems and they are not very good quality. There isn't much point in providing a download link when the quality wouldn't be very different from a youtube download anyway. Once the proper captures are done then a full quality download link will be provided for everyone. Calling someone a fool just because you seem to have a problem with them is a bit childish isn't it? But i can't see any pissy comments from the admins on the page at all. In fact this is the only reply that has been given to someone who asked for a download link on the thread about the full footage being added to youtube:

<span><span><span>"You can down the 1080p flv from YouTube directly. I have checked it against my original source and there is no real difference. It's not like the original is HD anyway. I've done my part now"
</span></span></span>

<span><span><span>I certainly wouldn't call that "getting pissy"
</span></span></span>

Then I guess you missed his deleting our entire conversation and banning me from the group? When all I did was ask for a download link to the original file?

I've been on this board for years and you've known this guy for how long? Not to mention that you and I are facebook friends. But thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, though. I really appreciate it.

Perhaps you shouldn't judge until you know the full story.

Just sayin...

I'd roll my iPad back to 5.1.1 if it were a sure-thing, but I'm not 100% positive it'll work. I've too much to lose.

Does anyone have an old iDevice to contribute to the cause?

It's not just that it's DRM protected. I'd be happy just to get a higher quality. What's the point of having a higher quality screen if they compress the video/pq even more.

Well, the iPad version is 720p. The media files themselves are ~250MiB in total, IIRC.

I don't remember the bitrates offhand, however.

I'm aware of that. That's the whole point. However, the Kindle has a higher screen resolution (and that's what I have). No reason to have the lowest quality on the highest resolution screen.

I've received a reply, directly from Random House:

Thank you for contacting Random House Consumer Services. We appreciate your interest in our publications.

The same files are sent to all. The individual eBook retailers compress their files at different levels to make them compatible with the output capabilities of their various proprietary devices.

I've also received confirmation from Amazon that this is the case. It's their fault.

As a result, I'm seriously considering getting an iPad now. :(

UPDATE: Nevermind, just downloaded an iBook sample and the iBook is CLEARLY better and higher resolution.  Some photos in the Kindle edition are pixelated, and crystal clear on the iBook.  Kind of miffed that the difference wasn't advertised, however, can't complain to be paying $12.99 twice for this collection of amazing content.

Ugh. Is there any way to download the iBook version and use it on my kindle?

Isn't the BD for TDK slathered in DNR and edge enhancement? Is there any alternate HD source without those problems?

It is, and being as it was the first BD I ever owned I did not realize how unnatural it looked until I got a few other discs to compare to.

I know occasionally it's on HBO and other premium channels but the whole movie is usually presented at 1.78:1.

Scroll up.
