Star Wars Insider celebrates the 40th anniversary with...

All these years they never acknowledge that the special edition of JEDI was kind of a dud, at least compared to Star Wars. It doesn’t fit with the whole “special edition-phenomenon-was like 1977 all over again!” narrative that has been the party line.

It mentions how Empire and Jedi were really an afterthought and the plan was really only for Star Wars. I should probably just post scans. no?

The special editions also required gross professional incompetence on behalf of the new editor. I mean George.

It’s odd because, in the beginning, they seemed to have the best of intentions to just cleaning it up, according to the article. And then…it just became Frankenstein.

So… Is there anything in the issue that actually celebrates the 40th anniversary? Or is it all about the special edition?

Believe it or not, there’s not a single thing in there about the originals…or dedicated to the original release. 😦

I’ve been to a horror con a few times in recent years, and it’s a mix of legit titles, region free discs of unknown origin, (at least to me) and then bootlegs of films that have never seen a legit release, and workprints. All really depends on the seller.

The bi monthly comic con I used to attend up in L.A. back in the 90’s was the Mos Eisley of bootlegs though. Got my first copy of the Holiday Special there. A smaller local con I attended in 2002 had at least one seller brazen enough to be offering an AOTC VHS bootleg that was probably shot off a theater screen.

But that’s what I’m saying: it’s not “brazen” in the least. It’s commonplace and expected. That’s the way it’s always been.

Are you kidding? All people sell at booths like those are bootlegs. Why do you think this should be the line drawn in the sand? That’s the way it’s always been and that’s the way it always will be. Either you’re a noob to conventions or never bothered to check out those types of booths. None of it is official, even if it’s been officially released.

Thanks, that also worked for me.

Just don’t forget to visit settings and untick “Enable Product Search” to turn off their Adware. 😉

JEDIT: I celebrated prematurely - I made three download attempts and on every occasion, the 1280 x 720 video was unplayable, despite trying five different programs. On subsequent attempts, it is impossible to download any version of the video using the plug-in.

It worked perfectly for me 😃

I’d report this guy too. He’s made thousands off these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAR-WARS-DESPECIALIZED-UNALTERED-ORIGINAL-TRILOGY-THEATRICAL-WIDESCREEN-HD/142344671770

So frustrating. Have reported on both accounts. Anyone who can, please do the same.

EBay doesn’t care. Remember, they’re making a profit off of these sales as well. Until the original rights holder gets involved, nothing will change

With that (vague) statement Kennedy unintentionally advertized Harmys Despecialized Editions. That guy who sells them illegally on ebay will have a prosporing business year. Even the prizes for the GOUT DVDs could rise further.

Not to derail the thread, but how is he able to sell those on ebay without any repercussions? If it’s that out in the open why make people jump through so many hoops to download them?

Repercussions from whom?

Released 25th of July. To accompany a theatrical re-release ?..

That’s what my hypothesis was in this thread. Or was it another? I can’t remember.

It ties in with the July 28th “random” Disney movie that still has no name, trailer, etc.

The July 28th movie is almost certainly not Star Wars related. It simply said “untitled fairy tale.” Fox owns the distribution rights on ANH in perpetuity. It’s highly doubtful that Disney would have a movie they’re not even releasing listed on their slate.

Maybe something has happened behind the scenes that we don’t know about? Anything is possible. It might not be JUST ANH. If it’s all 3 originals, Disney would have to work something out with Fox.

sigh That’s going on the twitter.

I was looking forward to a special double issue or something. But, alas, no. There will probably be more Rebels interviews. Maybe they’ll interview the people who did the effects work on the Special Editions. sigh I feel like Disney is now out to get rid of the original versions as well…

Want to see the very definition of a “screw you” to fans?

Here’s the ad in the back of the newest edition of the Star Wars Insider. It’s promoting the next issue that hits newsstands on May 23rd, 2 days before the official 40th Anniversary.

And what is the main thing they’re talking about? The 1997 special edition re-release.

They might as well put a big middle finger on the cover.
