Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *
Time

Here’s my spoiler-filled bullet-pointed reviewed:

Edit by moderator - digitalfreaknyc has seen The Last Jedi already - ahead of it’s general release date.

If you want to know what he thought of it then scroll down (it does contain spoilers and events from the film) if you don’t want to see that… then you may want to bypass this post…

spoilers begin here…

Luke dying is complete bullshit. It’s not explained. You have no idea it’s coming. And he deserved far more, as a character.

We didn’t need the burp.

BB-H8 was pointless.

I don’t get why DJ had that stutter. It wasn’t necessary…nor consistent.

Not enough Chewie.

I don’t remember anyone saying “I’ve got a really bad feeling about this.”

We needed more BB8.

Holdo says “godspeed,” I believe. Who the Hell is God?

Not enough lightsaber battles. The battle at the end of TFA was easily twice as long as the single one in this movie.

Not enough space battles.

I still don’t get why the republic ship was just sitting there forever.

Porgs are not nearly as annoying as you think they’re going to be. They’re pretty irrelevant and, honestly, didn’t need to be in the movie at all…and neither did the women who clean the temple.

The humor. There’s a lot of it. It was far too campy for a SW movie. Luke throwing the lightsaber behind him was funny…but i don’t think it’s going to hold up on multiple watches.

Again, don’t think this movie will hold up like TFA does. That one is very much a rocket-ship. I LOVED the pairings of Finn/Poe, Finn/Rey…etc.

Rose. Dear God…Rose. Go away. No one cares about you. The kiss is awkward and comes out of nowhere.

I’d love to hear about how TFA haters love this one…with lines of dialogue lifted right out of Jedi and Empire.

Why was the Emperor’s theme played during Snoke torturing Rey? Just cuz he was saying almost the same dialogue?

I was going to be extremely pissed if the movie ended with the big Falcon party when Luke just died. Fortunately it didn’t and ended on something far more poignant. However…that’s still sticking with me. Zero emotional weight. Luke deserves FAR, FAR better.

JW reused several pieces of music. I was actually surprised at how much repetition there was.

Phasma dies like a chump. She’s the Darth Maul of this trilogy. Deserved much, much better. Looked VERY cool. Did VERY little.

That’s it for now. I’ll add more if I think of more. I’ll be seeing it again on Thursday and I’ll add my thoughts.

That said, DO NOT expect massive spoilers. There is no “I am your father” moment. There are just some cool “ooh I need to see that” moments. Nothing earth shattering is revealed.

That’s why i said…temper your expectations.

spoilers end here…

Jaws The Revenge is back on Netflix next month if it needs capturing.

You know for sure that it is back on Netflix? The original cut?

Why wouldn’t it be? I can’t imagine they’d switch it out

Would you be willing to cap it? I don’t think I’ll be able to…

Of course I could. But there’s really no point in doing the whole thing. We really just need the pieces that weren’t included in the official release. Beyond that, it’s really just a “cut and paste” job.

Info: article on Empire Strikes Back audio/70mm Dolby mix

5.1 AC-3 on LD came out before 94/95 (I found a review of a Pioneer LD player with AC-3 RF output from late in 1995 and the Star Wars SE LD set had AC-3 5.1 audio in 97). It would make sense if the 93 mix involved remixing the surround to be two channel. The resulting Dolby Stereo mix would be downward compatible for 4 channel systems and be compatible with the current 5.1 systems then in theaters. I just finished adjusting the audio levels of the trilogy from the theatrical release to the 93 release and the 93 mix surround didn’t have the same signature that the theatrical and 85 did. There were a lot of subtle differences in the mixes so I may just have been imagining it, but it very well could be the first 5.1 mix of the trilogy. The audio levels seemed a lot closer to the 97 SE - what I was using to set the channel audio levels.

Clear and Present Danger was the first 5.1 DD title

Aaaaaand now the theatrical version is up on Netflix STREAMING. sigh

It’s not on the Netflix I use. Yes, still disc rentals on my side. Can’t stand streaming, even if it’s HD or 4K and am seeing it through an impossibly fast connection.
If the filesize is decent after a rip from Netflix Streaming, someone put it on a BD25 without DNR/EE use. Film grain needs to be left alone, dammit.

You realize that you quoted something from September of last year, right?

The version JawsTDS uploads will probably be better looking than the version Netflix puts out tho. Plus, they might not release it again, but take it down instead

I wasn’t planning on capping the whole thing. Just the portion he needed.

It’s not a big deal, there’s another source out there – and it’s only for a few hundred frames if anything…

But not an HD source,right?

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

From the comments section of Variety…

"Set Dresser says:
June 22, 2017 at 8:18 am

This article sounds like it was written by their agent.
Putting aside my personal opinion that the four films this pair has made so far are, once you get past their core ‘creative’ gimmick, comedic mediocrities, with hollow narratives, paint by numbers dialogue, and wafer thin character archetypes in place of actual character of any sort, if you did any sort of reaching out you’ve got to know that pretty much EVERYBODY wanted them off the film, as they refused to follow the film, as scripted, that they had signed on to and agreed to direct. Instead rewriting scenes and forcing actors to improv, resulting in a more heavily comedic approach, against all advice, and in direct opposition to what they had been hired to make. And they refused to listen or take advice or guidance from anyone, instead seeming to believe that now they were on the film they could do whatever the hell they wanted, and no one could do anything about it.

The majority of the cast was unhappy, the writer was unhappy, the producer was unhappy, the studio was unhappy, no one thought they were doing a good job, they would take advice or course correct, though they were given multiple opportunities to do so, and they certainly weren’t doing the job that they had agreed to do, so ultimately they HAD to be fired. And, frankly, honestly, DESERVED to be.

Part of me wishes someone would leak some of the footage online, just so the fans could see and fully appreciate just how far off the rails this had gone. Honestly, I don’t know if the film is salvageable, or if the reshoots will basically be a page one do-over (I suspect the latter) but even in its current state of flux, the film is in better hands today than it was a week ago, and at least now it has a chance again of being a worthwhile addition to the Star Wars legacy.

Defending the artistic integrity of directors is a noble cause, but next time you might want to find out the full story before you storm that particular barricade, because sometimes, just sometimes, it is the director(s) that are the problem and that are in the wrong and acting unaccountably out of control, and not in the best interest in the film they were hired to make. And this was very much one such case. Just ask, off the record, anyone working set on this show."

I actually just checked this out a few hours ago. Yep the Netflix version has the original ending. Strange. On another note the print of the first Jaws on Netflix is not the BD print either. It looks to be an HD master of the print from the 2000 and 2005 DVDs. It also had the first surround mix done for Jaws in 2000 ie minus the restored sound FX from the original mono.

So you said that the original cut of Jaws the Revenge is on Netflix, does it have the 3 frames of Jake’s Death that is not seen in any other cut? If you could check for me, I would be very happy.
Thanks!

They’re no longer on Netflix
