4k77 - shot by shot color grading (a WIP)
Time

Wait, I am a bit confused Dre. Sorry in advance for the dumb question.

I thought that your regraded 4k77 and Blu-Ray (btw I like the green cast as well), would be shot by shot and that is why it would take more than 6 months to complete. But it’s just a single set of adjustments with a LUT that you will release?

Just clarifying. Great work as usual.

I’ve been out of the loop for a few months, but I just have to say this is probably going to be my preferred version.

I do have a suggestion for you: Is it possible to re-edit the fight to sync the quiet part of the score around 1:40ish, to 1:50ish, where Rey and Ren are both struggling? I feel if it can be synced where the score picks up again when Rey drops her lightsaber, it could feel seamless. Maybe. I am a fan of the idea, but I’m not sure it can feel completely seamless.

Yeah, based upon some other responses on FE.org, I am thinking that I will not be rescoring the fight.

I agree with a lot of what you both said. Especially what Collipso’s thoughts on Cassian. He is the standout from Rogue One.

Rey is incredibly likable and charismatic but often times is uninteresting and just boring. I liked Rey a lot better in the Last Jedi though. She lacked any physical challenges but did have an identity struggle that proved to be really interesting.

Here’s a good way of showing what I mean…

When Rey lifts the rocks for the Resistance to escape, I feel nothing. She lifts them, oh well. I never saw her struggle with any force powers before hand so I was not surprised or elated in any way to see her succeed to lift the rocks.

Buutttttt, when her and Finn reunite, you see them hug, and then we get the close up of Rey smiling, I do feel something! It’s because it shows her finally learning where she belongs, and feeling at peace with being a “nobody”. She doesn’t have to feel like that anymore because she is somebody regardless of her parents.

Therein lies my stance on Rey. Any combat victories or feats of the force on her part feel empty and unearned. But the emotion of her trying to find where she belongs is compelling and relatable.

I’m almost at the point where I will have no use for the community at all. I hope that guy gets paid by the word.

I’m not even sure that guy is part of the community. He seems to be writing about film in general, but I share his view, that Star Wars has become a franchise, that doesn’t go forward, because it’s obsessed with looking in the rearview mirror.

Funny, I thought TLJ moved to new territory and broke the pattern. And Solo should be fun, not epicly serious.

I disagree. An Empire vs rebels/new hope vs fallen Jedi apprentice replay is not my interpretation of breaking new ground. TLJ’s calculated story twists don’t alter the fact, that it still shares a lot of narrative and visual similarities with TESB and ROTJ. It’s less derivative than TFA, but the fact that TLJ is seen by many as moving to new territory, imo proves that Star Wars has become so limited in scope, that the slightest deviation from the mold is now seen as visionary, and creative.

I seriously wonder if we will ever get a Star Wars film, that isn’t in some way a remix of Lucas’ greatest hits. What’s wrong with just telling a story about a new smuggler type character (or any other new character for that matter) set in the Star Wars universe, where we don’t know where all the characters end up? How about getting people to view your film simply on the merit of telling a good original story with good original characters, rather than relying on the classic characters, story tropes, nostalgia, and fan service to draw people in for another deja vu experience.

I actually really agree with you here. TLJ does take more risks than TFA, but it also could have taken some real chances that would have really shaken up the SW universe.

Firstly, after TFA, with Starkiller base destroyed, and the Republic gone, there was a vacuum of power that could be explored by Johnson in whatever way he saw fit. JJ gets a lot of criticism for writing RJ into a corner but the political situation was wide open. Johnson could have literally gone any direction with the overall story but instead went in such a boring and safe direction. The First Order now just rules over basically the entire galaxy, the Resistance is small and on the run the entire movie, and RJ basically just doubled down on the Rebels.V.Empire concept.

Secondly, RJ still had a second chance to really turn the story around with Kylo and Rey. Imagine if Rey accepted Kylo’s call to join him? Both the light side user and dark side user in the sequel trilogy, truly joining forces to eradicate what came before and start something entirely new?

Overall, RJ took a few risks but didn’t go nearly far enough to get away from remixing elements of other SW movies. I will admit that killing off Snoke was a great surprise and a really good decision by RJ that did something new with Star Wars.

At least you say that there is a character arc.

I mean sure. She changes in the movie. But it happens over the course of one scene and I think that she was an terribly written character.

I haven’t seen the movie*, but I don’t think you are right about this being all in one scene.

*In the past 8 months or so.

I’d love to hear a response to how what I said is not correct. She does not give a crap about the rebellion. She sees hologram in the very next scene. After this she is set on finding the death star plans and stopping the completion of the superweapon.

Jyn’s character arc was terrible.

She doesn’t give a crap about the Rebellion. I would expect the rest of the movie to build towards a moment where she finally decides to fight for something greater than herself. But instead, she declares to Saw that she could care less about the Rebellion, and in the very next scene she sees a hologram of her Dad. And then after seeing that hologram, her character now is absolutely dedicated to the cause of the Rebellion and set on finding the Death Star plans.

Sure, the hologram scene was emotional for her, but I would have preferred to not have her entire character arc happen in one scene.

I don’t know why it’s different for me, but Rogue One’s characters were severely lacking for me.

While this review is for TLJ it sort of sums up how I feel about the current state of the franchise, and the addition of Solo to the list of feature films:

https://www.google.nl/amp/s/www.popmatters.com/star-wars-the-last-jedi-death-spirit-review-2517583409.amp.html

This quote sums it up pretty well:

“These films of oppression and resistance, good and evil are restrictive in their scope, their multi episode continuation an echo chamber that would best left to the silence of imagination over big screen realisation. Star Wars has become a broken record, with a faulty premise of philosophical balance, that can only be handled appropriately by breaking its defined structure.”

While Solo is not a bad film in my view, and I liked both TFA and RO, I’m sick to death of the current franchise’s self-referential nature, and its tendency to revisit past hits. The announcement of a Boba Fett film on the day of Solo’s release only reinforces this view, and I dislike it intensely. Star Wars used to spark the imagination. These new films stiffle the imagination by either giving us distorted versions of what came before (ST), or by filling in the blanks with backstory and fan service (RO and Solo). So, while I found some enjoyment watching Solo, I can’t help but feel empty after yet another entry in the continuing Star Wars franchise, which sadly grows much faster in volume than in original content.

This is on point.

I haven’t seen it, but from what I understand, the problem with 13 Reasons Why is mostly due to the way it shows a character using suicide to get back at people who wronged her, which IMO sends a dangerous message to people who are victims of bullying and abuse that are contemplating suicide themselves.

i’ve seen it, and yeah that’s basically it. season 2 is a cash grab though

Yeah, it looks like a crappy show.
