Indeed. I think our two edits will compliment each other nicely as well, the styles are different enough that they should appeal to different audiences. I really respect yours. I never could finish mine I’ve been on and off for 8 years on mine but I’m determined this time. (Actually I did finish out at one point but in SD and I stayed over and lost everything to do it on HD)

Thank you for the compliment! I am definitely awaiting yours, it seems very promising 😃

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

When it comes to the issue of Rey being a Mary Sue, I must say that there is a lot of truth to that statement. I like the Force Awakens a lot but this is one of the films biggest issues for me. And Max Landis pointed out something important to this discussion which is that when criticizing the fact that Rey is a Mary Sue, responding with in-universe explanations as to why she is able to do these things does not help your case. Because the issue is not that it doesn’t make sense within the context of the universe. The issue is the direction that the writers decided to take the character. Could you explain away how Rey beat Kylo? Kind of. But that doesn’t matter because from a writing perspective, it is not smart to have your antagonist be beaten in the first film of a trilogy by a newcomer who just tried out a light saber for the first time. Not to mention how she understands the falcon better than Han (that was just ludicrous), learns a Jedi mind trick on the spot, defeats Kylo in both mental and physical battles etc. Rey simply isn’t written as a character with enough trials and weaknesses to overcome. This is why I am slightly nervous for episode 8. I just do not see much growth for Rey from this point onward.

Yes. This approach, the inclusion of more militaristic dialogue and the removal of any references to Anakin as a diminished character makes this edit the most promising ROTS fan-edit since the days of Aalenfae, Cutter and Bob Garcia’s edits.

Yeah, I’m only hoping he does the same for AOTC so that I can have the perfect machete order. 😂

Cut out AotC. It’s doesn’t really add anything, and it’s irrelevant like TPM. Boom perfect machete order* (once this fanedit is done).

*Technically that’s no longer Machete Order, but eat my shorts.

Agreed.

I have always wondered if you could rewrite the crawl and re edit a few things to make episode 3 the only prequel. Not sure how you would be able to do that though.

Maybe not even a good film.

Maybe?

But it’s only really terrible when you compare it to a masterpiece like empire strikes back.

Disagree. It’s terrible compared to TPM.

Disagree with you here. TPM is nearly just as bad. They are both trainwrecks in their own lovely way. Attack of the Clones had a romantic element that is central to the story which completely fails. And TPM doesn’t even have an actual protagonist. They are both god awful movies. I just think AOTC is slightly worse.

I’m not doing that. If they were finished I might, but it would be too jarring. I would add the scene of Luke and vader communicating telepathically if it were of the same quality as the rest of the footage, but it isn’t.

I thought the same for my edit. No matter how good a deleted scene may be, if it sticks out like a sore thumb (which the OT deleted scenes do) then it takes me out of the experience.

Clone Wars was very good

Wait, the movie?

It was in theaters, even though it really was cobbled together from episodes they originally planned on airing.

No, I get that, I just thought it was generally considered to be utter trash. I haven’t actually seen it, mostly because it sounds so horrible that I have no interest.

That is pretty spot on and I agree. The TV show is pretty solid after the first few seasons of action porn cause then you start getting more character development and well fleshed out story arcs. The movie though was utter trash. Animation was awful and stringing together a few episodes for a feature movie showed to not work at all. I hated it.

I thought redoing the Emperor was a must as I always hated the original TESB Emperor. Though I don’t like how they did it, it is an improvement.

As someone who likes the Clive Revill Palpatine more-and-more and the Ian McDiarmid Palpatine less-and-less as time goes by, I find this opinion increasingly unfathomable.

Same here. I think I may have actually preferred the SE one earlier in my life but I slowly have come to like the original far better.

I honestly don’t care enough to bother seeking out a fan edit. Excise a few bits from a turd, and it’s still a piece of shit.

I think it’s easier to make that argument for TPM and AoTc but in my opinion, Sith has a relatively strong core story that can be salvaged.

You may have a point. All the plot points pertinent to the OT are in that one. What edit would you recommend?

Easily Hal9000’s Labyrinth of Evil. The only thing I don’t like (and I literally mean the only thing) is that he has Padme live at the end. A simple cut of the ending and a replacement with L8wtr’s ending works a charm. Everything else is done to perfection by Hal. It basically restructures the plot so that Anakin’s fall makes more sense, is contained within himself more, and then the overall fat of the film is trimmed, AND you get the subplot of Padme helping create the Rebellion. It works wonders for the film.

Ranking the Star Wars Soundtracks

  1. The Empire Strickes Back
  2. Return of the Jedi
  3. The Force Awakens
  4. The Phantom Menace
  5. Star Wars
  6. Attack of the Clones
  7. Revenge of the Sith

† I do really like this score, but due to how lists work, it has been relegated to a lower place than I might have wanted it to. (And no, I do not accept ties.)

Updated ranking, which I am pretty satisfied with:

  1. The Empire Strikes Back
    A really good soundtrack.

  2. Star Wars
I think I pretty severely underrated this soundtrack in my original ranking. After listening through it again, I really liked it.

  3. Return of the Jedi
Pretty good. Side not: It’s pretty much impossible to find a good version of this soundtrack that either doesn’t sound like crap or has been watered down to oblivion.

  4. The Force Awakens
    Thumbs up.

  5. Rogue One
I think most people underrate this soundtrack, but I loved how it sounded and worked in the movie. I also liked how it tied in with the A New Hope soundtrack.

  6. The Phantom Menace
Thumbs up. I especially like ‘Anikan’s Theme’.

  7. Attack of the Clones
Pretty unremarkable as far as Star Wars soundtracks go.

  8. Revenge of the Sith
Pretty much the same as Attack of the Clones.

If you want a high quality remaster of the ROTJ soundtrack then I give my highest recommendation to the ABC remaster. I also used to think there was nothing to salvage until I listened to that beauty.

Updated (I think?) after watching RO for a second time.

1 ANH/ESB
2 ESB/ANH
3 TFA
4 RO/ROTJ
5 ROTJ/RO
6 TPM
7 ROTS
8 AOTC

I’m almost completely on board with this, the only difference being that I’ve come to think ROTS is worse than AOTC.

I get saying ROTS is worse than TPM, but worse than AOTC??

AOTC’s saving grace is that I fall asleep halfway through and don’t have to finish it. For that, it’s better than Sith, which is barely interesting enough to keep one awake, but does nonetheless.

I will say both are considerably better in fan edited form (while TPM only marginally improves). Though, despite that, I’m not sure if factoring fan edits into my ranking would really change any of my placements.

Mine doesn’t really except for episode 3. Fanedited episode 3 is a damn good film in my opinion. By restructuring the narrative, deleting and inserting new subplots, massaging the dialogue throughout, I think what’s left is a competently told story that is pretty emotionally resonant. The theatrical is a pain in the ass to watch but I consider it far more ambitious and redeemable than any of the other two prequels. I can’t stand behind putting TPM above RoTS. Just cause it used more sets and was shot on film and feels more Star warsy doesn’t give it a pass above RoTS. It is easily the most boring of the prequels and has an utter lack of an actual protagonist as pointed out by the RLM review. RoTS was far more competently handled than the other two. Don’t even get me started on the atrocity that was AoTC.

Ok, here’s another clip. It’s the custom opening text crawl! Since this fanedit only focuses on the immediate events leading to the Battle of Scarif, I’ve used the crawl to summarize the first two-thirds of Rogue One’s plot. Enjoy!

Damn. That’s really effective. And the Vader scene opening the movie actually feels really in place. Definitely looking forward to this edit 😃

Completely agree.

Since the edit is already complete I won’t be making more changes but I would still love to respond to your suggestion 😉

I actually think it is a good idea. It would be a strong way to end it and it might be the nostalgia in me but I just couldn’t lose the end celebration because seeing the ghosts look at Luke and all be so proud is just so heartwarming. It is a final scene that has a lot of joy and happiness to me so that is why I chose to keep it. I do see where you are coming from though! 😃

Thanks for your reply I know the edit was finished but I felt like commenting on it. I think your edit is absolutely amazing and is my definitive ROTJ edit. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Thank you very much!

Idea & Info: 'Avatar - The Last Airbender' 1080p Remastered Blu Ray Set
Time

I recently just discovered the absolutely amazing remastering project of the Last Airbender which upscaled all the episodes to 1080p. The show is done justice by a few talented and dedicated fans over at reddit. Check the link below for more info on their amazing project:

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/5hv4en/no_spoilers_atla_remastered_in_1080p_completed/

But the point of this thread is that I really wanted to take this amazing restoration work, and then create a custom blu ray set for the series using this restoration as the base of the project. Since there has been no public blu ray release, I thought this could be nice. I would create custom blu ray cover art, port over all the special features from the DVD’s, make some simple menu’s, make sure all the audio commentaries are there, and then release a nice and tidy .iso for all fans of the series to be able to burn.

This would require me to learn Adobe Encore from scratch (zero knowledge of that program though I do use Premiere Pro for my fanedits), also learn for the first time how to do blu ray cover art, and then buy and rip all the DVD’s for the special features/commentaries…but I think it would be worth it for such an outstanding series. I would have to start this once all of my AP exams are over but then I could go full throttle and try to get it done.

Thoughts? Anyone who would maybe want to help?

I love all your changes although one of my fave fan-edit endings is during Vader funeral pyre after the camera pans up into space then the credits roll.

I like this ending because I feel it ends it on a more adult and somber tone plus it corrects the continuity error that the war was over after the death of the emperor.

Just throwing in my two cents. 😃

I would say not. If you brighten the image of the last shot, you’ll notice that Luke is probably in that same force tree that holds the books. I forsee that being later in a more important part of the training.

The Force Awakens : Fan Edit Ideas

I have been wanting to try recutting the duel between Kylo and Finn so that Kylo instantly goes on the offensive, and never gets hit by Finn, and the duel would basically become a one sided ass beating that gets handed to Finn like you would logically expect it to be. I’m relatively pleased with the result and am curious if you guys find it effective at all:
