No Leaf Joke

-Cut from Rey saying “Okay” to Luke resting her hand on the rock.
-Replaced “Reach out with your feelings” with just “Reach out”

Wow. I really enjoyed that moment in the theater, but my goodness, it really does play out better like this. You’ve convinced me.

Here’s another attempt, this time trying to include the shot of Luke discarding the reed he is shown holding. I submit it to get a sense of whether people think the shot is better in or out.

That works great Hal! I’ll drop that addition into my timeline. It helps bridge the moment between her saying “Okay” and him resting her hand down.

Like all of you, the leaf joke was just so darn good. It was executed perfectly and was so hard to cut.

First, I love your idea for removing all references to how much time the fleet has left in regards to fuel.

And for the flashback scenes, I really want to somehow show an actual vision of the destruction/death that Luke sees. The clips used in the vision, as well as what filters to put on it would all be viable questions but it seems like a cool idea.

Looks great. Can’t even tell there were any changes made. Even though I thought this was one of the best jokes of the film, I must admit that seeing it played straight is much more effective.

Thanks! And I’ll be honest, it quite literally made me laugh out loud (very well done) so it was a tough decision to make but it just works so much better when it is played seriously.

5/10 for me is “competent, but I don’t like it,” so I pretty well disagree as well.

Letter grades, at least in the US (can’t speak for others) are total bullshit.

This!

I cannot stand our letter grade system where everyone feels the need to have all A’s in classes which means you AT LEAST need to get 90% or above on all your tests and quizzes. Most of my classes it is 93 % or above.

Kylo Pleads to Rey Rescoring - UPDATED

https://vimeo.com/265136372

I tried to build upon many suggestions when I got to finetuning this rescoring.

-Firstly, the music now fades out when we cut to the bridge with Hux. I was able to bridge the rising drums between two points at the end of the piece to do so and it flows pretty well.
-The music has been turned down a notch so that the dialogue can stand out more.
-The music now starts earlier and fades in more gradually.
-The dialogue audio has been polished up.

Please tell me how you all like the updates to the scene!

The Last Jedi regrade - One LUT to rule them all... (Released)

I honestly prefer the LUT’s so much more. You can customize them and simply apply them yourself without downloading the entire film.

Yes, but there are surely many people who might want to watch it without getting into the business of encoding video! That said, I think Dre has done more than his part in releasing the LUT. If enough people start asking for an encoding, I’m sure one of the many helpful people around here will get around to it at some point.

Precisely.

While I agree that it’s a shame we didn’t get more new motivic material in TLJ, if you really do listen to the score (and I mean all of it, not just what’s on the soundtrack), I think there’s a strong argument to be made that in pretty much every other way it is better than TFA.

Yeah. I actually forgot to mention tracks like “The Spark” which is just fantastic. And the music that plays when Luke closes his saber and surrenders to Kylo is great too.

I must say though that one area that is lacking is the music during the throne room fight. It is so forgettable. Which is why I will replace it with Duel of the Fates.

I think the throne room battle is an absolutely fantastic action cue. In my mind, you don’t want something epic on the scale of “Duel of the Fates” for that because A) it’s not the climax of the film, and B) it’s not an epic duel, it’s just Rey and Ben teaming up to defend themselves. The most epic part of that scene is when Snoke dies and we see them decide to team up (not when they actually fight), and I think the music fits that well enough.

Eh, I guess we’ll agree to disagree haha. I think the main reason I find it so epic is cause we are meant to see the potential of what they can accomplish if they rule the galaxy together and the light saber fight with the guards is kind of meant to signify that. But yeah, the action cue used is not bad by any means.

I will say my one very specific complaint in regards to the score is that we didn’t get a Rey/Kylo theme. This ideally would’ve been played throughout their connection scenes as mysterious at first, ultimately culminating in a sweeping action rendition during this scene. Since that theme doesn’t exist, I’ll live with what we got.

And the music for when Snoke dies and when they team up is perfect as it is. I’m more talking about when we cut back to them fighting.

Yeah I just meant that that’s the only moment that I think needed that ‘epic’ sort of treatment.

Ah I see. And your idea for developing their themes in the force connections and then culminating in the fight is a great idea!

The Force Awakens really grew on me after a while and I have grown to love it.

The Last Jedi doesn’t bring nearly as much new material to the table besides stuff like Rose’s theme (which I don’t care for) but it does a fantastic job of utilizing the previous themes from the Force Awakens and also using the music from the rest of the saga.

I remember the music more in the Last Jedi and the music itself is used better, but the Force Awakens has a more innovative and original score that stands on its own.

I’m just curious if anyone felt this would be a worthy fix, to rotoscope it out of the first half of the shot. It lasts about a second, so 23ish frames? In the previous shot with Rey and the dagger guard, you see them fighting in the distance behind Kylo Ren, and it would be cool if one could even make it look like Rey cut through one of them (maybe a flash and see it falling, for example) at that moment. In that shot she strikes both the left-hand dagger and the right-hand dagger, and if you had her cut through the left dagger, it also would be about 23 frames or less of work.

I’m not doing my TLJ edit for a while, but this is something I would do (unless someone beats me to it).

That would be awesome!

They’re both seamless technically, at least to me. For the Maz one, it may just be me but I feel without that line, Finn and Rose’s look seems a little out of place. It could imply that they are skeptical of whether this guy can do “everything”, maybe? It’s hard to look at it 100% subjectively since I know what it is meant to imply.

Yeah, that is what the shot is meant to now imply. They stare at eachother since 3PO is saying that this is the guy who can do literally anything.

The problem is I really couldn’t find any other shot to work with before we see Maz. I could take a closer look though.

Trimmed Hallway Scene with Rose and Finn

https://vimeo.com/264922234

-Cut the second time Rose says “They can track us through lightspeed?!”
-Cut the “I can’t feel my teeth, what did you shoot me with?” joke.

Trimmed Maz Conversation

-Maz no longer makes a suggestive joke about the codebreaker.

Looks pretty seamless my man. Are you going to have her be bubbly, then realize what he is doing, or does she already realize what he is doing in this version?

All the cuts to the conversation are seen in the clip so yeah, she still gets all excited and then realizes what is really up. I will post some clips of the trimmed convo between them in the hallway and then the trimmed Maz convo.

These are all scenes that you need for the subplot, but I thought to myself, “why not trim em up and get rid of the stupid jokes?”, so that’s my basic logic with these cuts.
