Star Wars: A New Threat (TFA EDIT) (Released)
Time

Iv gotta wholeheartedly agree with Lod Haseo concerning the fan edit idea of preserving the Kylo twist. It just isn’t worth it. All the things you guys would cut are things that bring meaning to the film and cutting them to preserve a twist just doesn’t make sense.

The scene with Snoke revealing Kylos lineage is incredibly important. It establishes the conflict within Kylo and also shows Snoke putting pressure on Kylo to not give in to the light.

The “Grandfather” line lets the audience know that Kylo doesn’t know or decides to ignore the true legacy of Darth Vader.

These are all reasons it simply doesn’t make sense to preserve a twist like this whilst sacrificing so many story elements and additions.

TFA Blu Ray Releases
Time

The Amazon digital release is getting bombed by a lot of people, supposively their streaming service is trash and you can’t put it on a laptop. Only Amazon verified tablet and mobile devices. And another embarrassing aspect of their digital purchase is the special features is simply bundled into one big file. From many reviews its been confirmed that they literally have you start the file, the first documentary plays and once that one finishes it cuts straight to the next documentary/featurette. When people have to write down what section of the file certain documentaries are on and fast forward specifically to that spot is very dissapointing. I think the cover art of the regular blu Ray is my favorite to be honest.

TFA Blu Ray Releases

Just thought this would be fun topic to discuss considering the different Force Awakens Blu Rays you can purchase. As far as I’m concerned these are the available ones:

Regular: (20 bucks)
-Black cover with starry background and Force Awakens text.
-Blu Ray+DVD+Digital and Bonus Disc

Walmart: (20 bucks)
-BB8 Cover
-Blu Ray+DVD+Bonus Disc

Best Buy Steel book: (30 bucks)
-Kylo Ren Steelbook cover with Phasma on back
-Blu Ray+Bonus Disc

Target: (25 Bucks)
-Character Poster themed cover
-Blu Ray+DVD+Bonus Disc
-Target Exclusive Extra 20 Minutes of Bonus Features

What did you guys decide on buying? Best cover? Did the extra 20 minutes make you pay up for the Target version? 10 Bucks more for steel book packaging, is it worth it?

Idea: Star Wars: Rebels movie(s)?
Time

I have seriously thought about combining every two episodes into one and then cutting unnecessary humor and other plot lines or even full episodes for a more contained and serious season 2 with less yet longer more intense episodes. Same could be done for season 1 but not to the same extent since that is the lighter season and season 2 should be be more dark.
So basically the idea would be not a movie series but just trimmed down, more focused versions of Seasons 1 and 2.

What are your favorites? List 'em 1-6

I never said better than ESB. I said better than ANH which is my second favorite Star Wars movie.

Episode 7 had a lot of limitations. It had to jump 30 years forward. It had to bring back original fans. It had to bring back prequel fans. It had to bring in a new generation of fans. It had to play it safe. Reuse story elements to be a soft reboot for the franchise. With Rian Johnson and his story group helming episode 8 with a set of great characters and a new brewing galactic conflict it sets the stage for the potential to pass ANH. I just don’t think it can match the utter perfection and magic of The Empire Strikes Back.

Indeed. But don’t u think by doing the following cuts and changes it would work legitalemty. This is as detailed as I can be currently just off of memory of the movie:

Well either way there’s still the issue of the randomness of the Starkiller showing up halfway through the film

Since this issue is already present with original sequence of events I would ignore this issue.

(and trying to buy it as a threat without seeing what it can do).

Hux’s speech about it is pretty convincing. His acting and utter intensity is felt and it directly is about the power of the base. The combined shots of a star being sucked and the one shot of the sky turning red and the trees burned provides a very majestic introduction to what it takes to power such a weapon and convinces us it has the ability to destroy a system.

The problem with not having the New Republic scenes is there’s a sizable plot hole created - why aren’t people evacuating? Why isn’t the Republic helping the Resistance?

If someone is a viewer, invested in the film and they question this possible plot hole you could saythat the reason the republic isn’t helping the resistance in this specific crisis is due to the fact that only the resistance would know at that point about the weapon and that theres not enough time for the republic to not only send help across the entire galaxy but to get Notified in time also.

Moving Hux’s speech and the Hosnian destruction is an interesting and actually pretty cool idea, but it kind of messes up the attack on the base. When do we learn that the base is a system killing weapon? Do we just show up at the Resistance base and suddenly everyone’s talking about it? One of the problems with the Starkiller base is it shows up late in the second half as sort of an underdeveloped subplot. Moving the speech and the weapon’s first use would not really help matters.

Keeping Hux’s speech where it is except in prep for the base to start sucking up a star would solve all of these concerns. It would establish the orders motive, how they use the base, establishes that it will be sucking a star until it’s single fire. And the reason the Resistancd is worried is because it’s sucking a freaking star (“massive disruptions in hyperspace”). By cutting certain snippets of dialogue in the base, the resistances concern with the base as a result of it beginning to suck a star feels like a logical continuation of the story.

Only solution I can figure is if Starkiller base is mentioned in the crawl

Another good idea that combined with the idea I had would make this plot restructure of moving the Hosnian destruction not a problem.

Indeed. But don’t u think by doing the following cuts and changes it would work legitalemty. This is as detailed as I can be currently just off of memory of the movie:

-Make Hux’s speech stay at the same point in the story but instead it’s in prep for the base to start sucking a star. This helps explain star killer base and why the resistance starts taking about it in the base (more on that later)
-Replace firing shots with star sucking shots (musical transition)
-cut Kylo looking
-cut Hux saying fire
-move Han/Finn reactions on Takodana to First Order Arriving while cutting Finn saying “it was the first order, they did it”
-cut Poe saying “Finn knows about the weapon THAT DESTROYED THE HOSNIAN SYSTEM” or just cut Finns confrontation with Leia
-cut Snoke saying they will target rebel base and him ordering Hux to oversee preparations. You could start the scene after Hux had left or cut the scene entirely
-there is no star sucking scene before resistance briefing now since this is scene would now already have been paired with Hux’s speech earlier.
-cut reference to star killer targeting the resistance base during briefing.
-it’s now implied that it’s sucking up star in prep for an attack (Poe explains this star draining concept during briefing). If you cut them saying its next target is resistance base then 3PO’s line about how “without the republic fleet they’re doomed” (something along those lines) that line now can mean that if the republic is destroyed then their resistance and ultimately the Galaxy would be doomed.
-after Rey and Finn desperately shoot at Troopers after Han dies cut to star killer base firing and destroying the Hosnian system. Utilize Leias breakdown here now as a double whammie so that her one reaction shot can be used in response to both Hans death and Hosnian destruction. This would be the critical success moment of this plot change/restructure
-Then cut to Chewie blowing charges and let movie play out as normal.

There may be a couple more mentions of Hosnian destruction that would need to be cut. But keeping Hux’s speech and them all watching it freakin suck up a star would be good to introduce the bases purpose. Then once it destroys the republic you may need to cut happiness down from pilots to be consistent with the fact that the republic was recently destroyed.

I think I know a way to keep the Hux speech.

Instead of Hux witnessing the first firing of the weapon it is when it begins to suck the star. When he says “Today is the day…blah blah gets destroyed” it would still work because it’s just later in that same day the republic gets destroyed. You would remove him saying “Fire” and replace the shots of it actually shooting with some still epic shots of it sucking up a star shown later in the film. You would then cut all dialogue mentioning destruction of Hosnian system. Then put all shots of it firing after Hans death. This idea is from this amazing article. I suggest reading it all the way through and modeling it after this way so that you could keep Hux’s speech and move the destruction.
