Star Wars: A New Threat (TFA EDIT) (Released)
Time

Yah. I just thought about the pieces in Star Wars that would best improve the brevity of the scene. Also “Anakins Dark Deeds” signified a massive shift in the galaxy when originally used. So it is recycled here because it not only sounds awesome but the tide has turned in the galaxy. It marks the tragic start of the First Orders Rise. Cause in TK’s edit they ultimately succeed at the end despite the weapon being destroyed, they accomplished the goal of destroying the ignorant republic. This plot change definetly improves the film a lot as a whole.

Sweet. It’s the third act to figure out now haha. I may throw up a clip tonight of playing around with it. The final project would need to have rescoring done most likely. R u skilled at either removing music or creating sfx? The rescored scenes would only need sfx so I guess I could use “Star Wars Sounds” (Myspleen) and recreate the sfx. In That_OT_Rulers edit he is removing the music so we could maybe get help from him. I’m thinking of using Order 66 music once it cuts to Leia grieving. Then right before Chewie blows explosives, we cut to Starkiller firing, then back to Chewie blowing explosives, then to Poe coming through the opening. This string of events with order 66 music would be pretty emotional I would guess.

We can then shift the rest of the trench run earlier and intercut it with the bombs being set. Then during lightsaber fight it would cut to people evacuating rather than the trench run.

So yah, when I get home I’ll show you my basic idea with previews.

K here’s a couple previews. It’s Hux’s speech, altered meeting with Snoke and altered rebel briefing. I cut Snoke talking about crushing the resistance, and during the briefing cut Leia saying there the next target. Feedback on the ideas is welcome. None of the cuts would be ready to go into an edit fresh but I think the editing in the previews is pretty seamless despite maybe some transitions.

Sorry have been having some internet issues. Will be getting on that. I may throw up previews for scenes that are cut so that any dialogue contradicting the plot change is removed. When Kylo/Hux talk to Snoke a second time, I had to cut Snoke talking about crushing the resistance. The rebel briefing is trimmed up too so yah once internet gets working, I’ll have em up.

Hux’s speech and everything up until Hans death would be easy to master for the plot change. But I think some more serious restructuring and rescoring in the third act could be effective.

But getting Hux’s speech right and cutting contradictory references being removed is the first step.

^I don’t doubt it. Alas, it is one of the many things my parents told me was satanic and forbade me to have anything to do with.

I suppose I should add it to the list of things to catch up on now that they’ve relaxed.

Haha yah. I just hope the day comes when my parents relax enough to sit down and watch some good ol T2 with me.

I would also maybe try to do the following in line with your plot restructuring:

-Cut together a star being sucked up with Hux’s speech. I overlayed it with the last section of “Anakins Dark Deeds”. If you want a preview clip, I can upload that. Basically Hux now prepares a speech for the star being sucked up. This is cut together pretty well.
-Then all references to Starkiller aiming at the resistance or the Hosnian destruction are removed. Believe me, the cuts are seamless.
-But yet I’m puzzled on how to implement the Hosnian destruction later on. I was thinking putting it right after the shot of Rey and Finn desperately shooting at troopers (before Chewie blows exposlives). Then we cut back to Chewie blowing them, then we cut to Poe breaking through the opening and hopelessly destroying the base. We intercut this with Rey and Finn escaping. This entire sequence would be rescored for improved emotional impact. Then you let movie play out as normal except we cut to people evacuating during the lightsaber fight instead of cutting to Poes trench run which would be shifted right before Hans death.

I have done the work for the Hux speech and most of the cuts leading up to Hans death but I am still thinking of how to handle the third act. This could be possibly implemented in V2 of your edit and would really redefine the experience of the movie as a whole.

I would like to see how you handled Hux’s speech it is similar to what I am doing.

Yah I’ll try to get a preview up later tonight once I get home

Not funny.

I thought it was funny. Partly because the “other” project I’m on nearly HAS given me a heart-attack. 😃

Legacy is slowly moving up the chain. Executives are nervous, skittish creatures.

Literally buzzing with excitement!

Anyway to me, “TIE vs X-wing” rehash is the most unforgivable of all TFA rehash elements.

Despite most borrowed elements not bothering me this was something that I agree got on my nerves. And it wasn’t that they used X Wings and TIEs. It’s the fact that it’s ALL they used. So yes, good point but overall didn’t diminish the pure joy of seeing Poe kick some serious ass.

Even more than another death star, another masked villain,

Ok. Huge disagreement here. Not only is that already a picky thing to say but the mask serves as a unique way to visually show the inner mind of Kylo Ren. Vaders helmet was a sign of true hardship and power. Kylos was shown to the same until the critically important (and well done) interrogation scene when he takes it off. It shows that Kylo is insecure and his mask is put on out of his insecurity. The mask gives the story extremely new ideas and concepts to explore with new characters.

another desert planet

Eh. Could have used a different planet but they did it so well with her as a desert scavenger and living in an ATAT that I thought it displayed the difference in her and Lukes upbringing. But I see your point.

with lead starting as a “peasant” with undiscovered force potential,

This was awesome IMO. It definetly was needed IMO because the force had awakened after 10 years since a Star Wars movie was last released. And honest to god, someone had to get the force like this. We had Kylo. So are you fine with just that? No. Someone had to get the force.

good guys being in a weaker position again, etc.

Great point. I think books might help clarify why but I agree that the movie obviously shouldn’t require books to explain it. I think Episode 8 can fix this by mentioning the Republic past leading up to TFA. Good point.

Overall after reading mounds of posts between you and Haseo, Iv gotta say you have a good basis for most of your arguments. And it really depends on how you look at the film. I think Lucas directing with Kasdan writing and Kurtz producing would have given you a film you were looking for. But me and many others expected the “force to awaken” with a familiar beginning that served as a bridge between two trilogies that set up the groundwork for episodes 8 and 9 which can be more creative.

IMO the force awakens used similar beginnings to tell eventually (hopefully) new stories in 8 and 9. It gives you many of the same circumstances as Episode 4 and shows you how many new characters react differently than the old ones. These new characters then I think will guide us to a deeper trilogy story that shows how these characters are different than the old and how they will command the direction of the galaxy’s fate.

That’s how I look at TFA.
But again you make great points it’s just we were looking for different things except we can both agree Starkiller base was just taking it too far 😉

I’ll give it a shot on the basis that you seem to want to talk about other problems with the film that aren’t discussed much or at all. I certainly need to hear some new criticisms because “rehash/remake/reboot” has gotten staler than 3 week old dog shit.

EDIT

1:36 minutes in and I think this is not the criticism video I was looking for lol

Agreed. The rehash argument is so old. There is some validity but for the most part I was fine with the elements it borrowed except Starkiller base. Everyone has made up their mind on how much the similarities bother them and I personally think for the most part I welcomed the similarities. They needed to rekindle a new beginning for both the new characters and the audience. Episode 8 and 9 I believe don’t have this burden and further plot similarities would not be as welcome.

But other gripes with the film are now of more interest for me to hear out.
