Who'd like to try a chess variant? Now playing Xiang Qi, a.k.a. Chinese chess
Time

The cannons are indeed a fun addition.  However, I'm not a fan of certain things.  For instance, the river, while nice in that pawns gain additional powers, but keeping the already extremely limited elephants to one side of the board is an annoyance. Consider that the elephant would be restricted to 14 cells on a 90 cell board, but with that restriction it now has access to a mere 7!  Also, the elephant and horse cannot jump, though the game from which xiang qi descended did allow it for both.  Also, the limited number of pawns annoys me.  Korean chess is similar and yet different, and I think I will like it better.  I like certain advantages, most especially the elephant move, the lack of a river, and more versatility in king and guard moves.  However, the cannon is weaker, so I'm not sure how much that affects the whole thing.

I have to be honest, I like the king and guard restriction to the palace, however.  It makes for more of a challenge to defend, and the restriction on kings facing each other is an interesting addition as well.  In any case, I'm pretty sure this is still my least favorite of the Big 3, but I am enjoying the game nevertheless.

How about a game of Japanese Chess, i.e. Shogi? Now playing Shogi4
Time

I am kind of thinking the same thing.  I see the predicament you were in, since even with my powerful king, I cannot possibly compete with a team twice as large and with double the moves.  And given the initial arrangement of the pieces, getting to the pleasure garden is an impossibility.  I'm not resigning just yet, but now getting this perspective, I don't think the game is well balanced.  I wonder if we can explore this game a little longer, then propose solutions that could enhance the lone player's chances.  It will never be a perfectly even game, as such is statistically impossible in a scenario like this, but we could certainly achieve a more appreciable balance.

However, though I don't expect to win, I want to see what kind of a fight I am still capable of making.

Movie Apologist Thread
Time

You know, all movies have goofs.  It's what inevitably happens when you edit together various takes of a story.  Things will never work out perfectly in every way.  But sometimes there are holes in logic that are just so glaring that it truly disrupts your enjoyment of those movies.

Most of this site is devoted to trashing certain movies, and that mentality has carried beyond Star Wars.  Any flaw in any film is just unacceptable to some.

But that's not what this thread is about.  This thread is for movies you love and cherish, but where you just need a little help explaining away some problems so you can get rid of that cognitive dissonance.

Take Jurassic Park.  I love that movie.  There are errors, like doors that magically change between open and shut, movie player bars when we're supposedly watching a live video conversation, etc.  I can overlook those, understanding they are part of the natural movie-making process.  However, I cannot get past the Tyrannosaurus paddock problem, where the ground magically drops 100 feet between T. rex's escape and Grant's/Lex's descent on the wire.  I cannot think of a reasonable justification.

OT.com: you're so good at tearing movies apart.  Can you explain away problems with the same ease?  Help me, OT.com.  You're my only hope.

So I have so little experience with this game and even a good opening strategy that we are on pretty equal footing.  Sorry I didn't move sooner, but I wanted to take a few minutes that I didn't have to just look at the board and get an idea of what to do.  I wouldn't be surprised if you beat me on this one.
