Collaborative Fanediting: An ROTJ Proposition (BACK ON TRACK WITH EMANSWFAN AT THE HELM--SEE POST 1488 OR OP FOR A LINK!)
Time

We were talking about the Lost Rebel footage in the deleted scene thread.  While watching it (not available at the moment), I noticed some lines that seem to reveal some sort of mission objective.  I remember some lines about taking out a tower.  What objective might this have represented? If possible, how might we even possibly use these lines to reconstruct this plot point in our edit?  It doesn't necessarily have be what they had in mind (for instance, we could use it to show fighters attacking a star destroyer bridge tower (maybe even the Executor!), the shield generator specifically, a cannon tower on the Death Star, or anything like that.

Another discussion (I can't remember where I read it, probably somewhere in the ESB and ROTJ wishlist thread) discussed the inconsistent appearing cockpits vs the ships.  It'd be nice to better match the dialogue of the pilots with the appropriate ships.

But timdiggerm brought up that it might be best to simply film new pilots.  Anyone know where costumes might be obtained for the various pilots?  And I suppose we could composite in the actual cockpits.

Well, if anyone ever does feel ambitious, it should amount to *only* around 200 frames max (approximately 8 seconds).  Considering the effort it will take to correct all the other thousands of colored frames, if someone does know how to do it, I don't think it would be the end of the world.  However, I admit I may be asking more than anyone is able to provide.  Just thought I'd throw it out there.

I'm conservative in part because I feel concerned about what we are asking of our unpaid two CGI talents (as opposed to a paid team of CGI animators).  These things seem awfully tough to me.

But I won't speak for anyone else.  If they like the ideas and are willing to do it, I wouldn't at all stand in their way.  I definitely think this is a better way to treat ol' Boba.

One of the trickiest parts of redoing some of these scenes would be adding color.  I know I'm hoping to include Lost Rebels footage, but a couple of the parts I'm interested in are black and white.  Is this even possible?  If so, it may be comforting to know that for our purposes, we'd probably only need a few seconds from the whole black and white section, which would certainly be easier to fix that 5 minutes worth.

I can address the stem cell argument later when I have more energy.  Tomorrow's my anniversary, Still preparing for Christmas, I'm behind in work, and I'm devoting too much time already to the collaborative ROTJ edit.  Besides, this thread weighs very heavily on me.  Last night as I put my daughter to sleep, the conversation here just made me sad.  It's hard for me to address this topic, and I feel particularly self-conscious about my style of late anyway.  I can come back later when I feel better prepared emotionally.

What luck!  Our team may finally be complete (or mostly complete).  Emanswfan is fixing up the deleted scenes and is working on the ROTJ scenes in particular right now.  I'm not sure if he wants to be an official contributor here, but I know I really would appreciate his efforts:

Well I don't even have a BD player yet, I'm afraid.  I'm sure plenty others here would be able to help you out more than I.  However, I'm glad you're willing to help.  Please feel free to offer suggestions for our edit.  If you don't mind, I would like to include your name to our first thread, even if you don't wish to officially take part in its creation.  Simply fixing up the deleted scenes would be a huge help and you would deserve credit.

Oh please don't ever leave us, emanswfan!  It looks like Adywan would love your help, and so would we over at the ROTJ Collaborative thread.  We have nearly every role filled, at least for the present, but we are in desperate need of someone to fix the ROTJ deleted scenes!

Please check out our progress here:

Can't respond to everything, but I will say in response to one comment that sex is indeed natural and it is a beautiful thing.  I'm glad you even called it something like, "the beautiful act of making love."  I just am incapable of distinguishing between the beautiful act of making love and the beautiful act of making babies.  They are inseparable and were never intended to be otherwise.  I understand that our society and economy are easier on smaller families.  But sex's primary function has always been to make babies, and therefore every time someone has intercourse they must be cognizant of that fact.  If they are not responsible enough to care for a baby, they shouldn't have sex.  If they had sex without being prepared for that potential end result (as millions are), then they should at least be responsible enough to give the baby up for adoption.  From the legislative end, I feel much more could be done to improve the adoption system, but I never, ever would put killing a human, even an undeveloped, unthinking, unfeeling human, above a person's level of responsibility.

That said, twister111, you made it quite clear this hits home to you.  Without asking you to divulge details you clearly would rather avoid, let me just say that I don't judge most who have had an abortion, considering most people don't see things the way I do.  If a mother accidently forgot her baby was in the back seat of the car and allowed it to die, I'd be unhappy with her choices, but I also would not judge what was not a conscious choice (this is different from when people say, "I'll be back in a couple of hours, Junior").  I don't hold a pro-choicer to be a murderer (unless I believe they should know better perhaps, such as a member of my church who would believe abortions are okay).

I still feel very excited about this.  I guess the best way to show which shots I like may be to simply include them as little pictures in the script.  I really love what you've done.  However, since this is a collaborative edit, and since you will be the one doing most of this sort of work, you certainly should make your own call on most of these.  We can suggest, but I think you are the one with the final say on all such matters.

As for CGI in the battle scenes (where I personally think it would be most useful) when I finish the script I can some rough storyboard illustrations.  They will probably not be great, but at least they'll give an idea of what I would envision.

So I'm going to try to get the script finished before Christmas.  Like I said, most changes are at the beginning and end.

I want to make sure we don't lose too much steam on this project, so I guess now would be the time to ask what Angel and Aalenfae are willing to do.  I believe Angel created most of the mattes and such on the wishlist.  Which of those are you interested in doing?  If you were to ask for my preference, I would say all of them!  They really are stunning.  Aalenfae, what kinds of changes are you able and willing to make?  Your CGI mockup looked great as a start, and I'm wondering if you can produce even more realistic ships and the like.  Is what we are discussing even fair to ask of you?

So just thinking more about the Endor thing, I guess people don't like it because it doesn't seem exotic enough (at least that's part of the problem).  It seems that if Aalenfae and/or Angel are willing to incorporate many of the brilliant suggestions and mattes (most of which were created by Angel anyway) into our edit, the planet would appear far more exotic.  I'm certainly not opposed to that.

I thought that was interesting too, but yes, that's the same thought I have as well.  Plus, we'd still be left with a loose thread: since it turns out he's obviously an Imperial agent in that scenario, does he ever get what's coming?  That will remain something difficult to resolve.

Interesting idea to let Boba run the criminal empire.  Could be a decent way to part ways with him and simply leave him out of the rest of the story.  Could you maybe give a rough mockup to show us how it could work?  I could see using the Boba footage when he prepares to shoot Leia (as Boushh).

Hey ender, were you to go the "No boba at all" route i made a mockup/edit of that a while back:

(and here is something else: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JklIHGzPkTs )

I like Boba Fett, but I think that if his death is too lame to most, it'd be easier to eliminate him completely rather than give him a grander death, at least at this point in my book.  I never saw this video before, but taking  a look at it, it's quite effective.  It never lets us feel like anything is missing, the pacing isn't disrupted, and no cuts were noticeably weird (except cutting out the excess Salacious Crumb, and I am for completely removing him anyway, solving that problem for me).  Well done.  I'm for it, though I don't know if others would be.  I know that many want to give him a more glorious death, which I think would be cool too, but simply too complex to be worthwhile IMO.

Also I'm for anything that takes away from some of the Ewok cuteness and humor, so the second video looks good too.  I guess you don't like the shoulder tapping though, eh?

Just watched both your clips, Ronster.  My thoughts:

Obviously you are not a fan of Luke/Leia being brother and sister.  Your cut works surprisingly well, though it would be good to redub his line from "Then you know why I have to face him," to ""Now you know why I have to face him."  Cutting Han's jealousy worked well too.

I personally like the shuttle entering the DS.  Since it's reused ROTJ footage, and since Adywan is planning on cutting the shuttle heading to Executor in ESB, I'd suggest instead that that footage be used for the most part.

I see you like a lot of what I did :)

I know Spence put the entirety (or at the majority) of the sword fight together.  I personally like the fight split between other battles personally for at least a couple of reasons: 1) it gives the battle a feeling of greater length and therefore feels like more of a struggle; 2) the various simultaneous battles climax at about the same time instead of seeing one climax, then having a breather, then another, then a breather, etc.

Also in your rearrangement, the Executor crashes into the Death Star before the shield is down.  I suppose if we were to cut it that way it could crash into the shield instead, but we'd have to cut out the dudes running around the DS corridors.

I truly like the idea of Leia getting shot just before Vader taunts Luke about her, but it's too quick a shot to care, and we don't see her in much trouble there or afterwards.  Obviously if we were to do that, we'd have to remove her from the storming of the bunker afterwards, especially if you plan to keep her shooting those other guys when she's injured.  Or else you'd need to remove that completely and make her wound seem rather minor, which then defeats the purpose of showing her get shot.  If you found a way to make her injury not appear so overly fast and create a more perilous mood, then I could see it being more successfully pulled off.

I know I said I like ROTJ better than others which probably leaves me more willing to leave some things as they are.  I don't personally feel the need to rearrange so many of the end clips.  I really hope this doesn't offend you, and it's only my opinion.  We are a team.

As for Boba Fett, if you could successfully pull some of that stuff off (especially Boba shooting him in the hand), I'd say that's a much better way to go.  I don't much care for his head falling on the ground, but otherwise it's interesting.  The thing is that I don't know how possible it is.  It looks a bit complex for our special effects guys.

This is my feedback.  Hope you take it as constructive criticism.  I'm always open to the same for my contributions.  It's the only way to make progress.

It sounds good to me.  So tell me, title reads, "Jedi rescorer."  I remember you commenting on The Cutter's edit quite a bit.  I see you started a thread for potential replacement music.  You have suggested music here.  You are clearly musically inclined.  Are you able to do compositions in the same manner that The Cutter was?  If so, are you interested in scoring our project here?
