The Enderverse (WAS: Finally! Ender's Game emerges from Development Hell!)

I loved the part in ENDER'S GAME that took us away from Ender and told us what Peter and Valentine were doing. The concept of global forums on a network where topics of international concern could be discussed. It really expanded the story (though I can't see how they would have time for that in the film.)

I loved that too.  It actually surprises me that Card had that much foresight when writing the book.  In reality, that subplot serves no real purpose in the book itself, except to expand Ender's role as a Speaker for the Dead in the end.  But as he wrote more books, particularly the Shadow series many years later, it suddenly had more relevance for the stars of the story.  Nevertheless, I find that departure from the primary storyline quite interesting.

The Hobbit movie: Dwarves
Time

A couple of things strike me as interesting, though not worthy of their own thread, yet still only somewhat on topic:

The Last Ringbearer

My brother sent me this link.  It's supposed to be about the losers of the Battle for Middle Earth.  Kind of a different take on a classic story, much like Wicked does for the Wizard of Oz.  Looks interesting.

And maybe this next one is already well-known, but it interested me when I found it.

The Hunt for Gollum

Though I haven't taken the time to watch it through, from what I saw it's a fan film spanning the time when Gandalf departs from Frodo's home in search for more information  including his and Aragorn's search for Gollum and when Gandalf returns with information about the Ring.

Both could be interesting takes on the Tolkein universe.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread

So I had a thought, as I'm seeing all these exciting PT edits coming along.  The redubbing is especially fantastic, and I hope that some of these folks will share notes and their dub tracks.

Along those lines, the Neimoidians have been repeatedly criticized for sounding like Asians (or one sounding like a surfer).  Some have tried dubbing with Japanese or reverse Swahili or something, but I think it would be best to have a more foreign sounding language.

Star Wars lore now states that they are related to the Duros, those blue guys you see in the Cantina in ANH

Duros

Neimoidians

I think it might be interesting if someone could create a track of some vocals similar to that of the Duros and dub the Neimoidians with that.  That way well designed dubs could fit the mouths better, wouldn't be interpreted as racist, and could allow for a more purposeful Federation rather than silly, cowardly, pointless Sidious puppets.

When You Are a Movie/TV Character...
Time

The woman you are interested will immediately become quite offended when you tell her a fantastic but true story explaining your recent bizarre behavior.

You can get drunk by simply standing at a bar and holding a glass while explaining your sad tale to your friends.

Neither the debris from the explosion, nor the impact of landing 20 feet from where you were, will cause any serious bodily damage.  Moreover, you will not suffer any hearing damage in spite of your proximity.

Generic but monstrous opponents will die with a single arrow or bullet to any point on the body, but the ordinary dying hero will continue to fight as if only stunned when shot several times in the chest and vital organs.

If sounds are dulled and your world starts to go into slo-mo, that's probably a good time to look around and figure out which character you care about was just fatally wounded.

An onslaught of bad guys will always take you on one at a time so you have time to kill them individually and quickly rather than taking advantage of their numerical superiority.

^I made sure to include a smiley to assure that both no offense was intended as well as an acknowledgement to what I was sure would be a response to my point.  (Remember when you made that suggestion...I've been using smileys a lot more since then).

I actually have noticed this.  I feel that there are many fair-minded atheists and have a great deal of respect for them.  Even those who criticize religion are still the recipients of my respect, as long as their criticism is fair-minded and not the I'm-a-super-hip-liberal sort.  Though I know I've had religious related spats with you and others, I hope that as you've come to know me and my personality a bit better, you've seen taht I'm rather tolerant of others' views and their disagreement.  I was not offended by Bobocop (though if I'd met him in person, I might request that he not disrespect someone so sacred to me in my presence, but this is an Internet forum).

My whole point to the post was merely to cause a little reflection.  There are also many who are the "cool" sort, and they are prevalent on the 'net (though this site is actually generally rather respectful and genuine).  If you go to Huffington Post or even IMDB and look at a discussions surrounding a religious flick, there are so many there who cling to a self-righteous nature that is particularly targeted at Christians (especially Catholics and Mormons), who think themselves far above Christianity, yet simultaneously overly-defensive of Islam.  Or there are those who simply in ignorance criticize every aspect of religion, even the virtues of both Christianity and Islam, simply because they have "risen above" the foolishness of such superstitious beliefs.

I appreciate your take on most things C3PS, and I respect your view and tolerance in spite of our different worldviews.

You superstitious Christians need to lighten up!

Atheist response:

You insensitive Christians who think you're right and all other religions are wrong.  You bigots!

Dark Knight Rises - Now that we know the cast
Time

^^Agreed completely.

^I'm glad you liked it.  It's imperfect, but it was very satisfying in my mind as well.  I do look forward to seeing what faneditors can do with it, but that doesn't detract from the original film in my mind.  I just enjoy alternate takes.  And I wouldn't mind a spinoff either, though I'm not positive if it should be a true spinoff with Gordon-Leavitt playing Robin "John" Blake, or if they should start from scratch with the assumption that a Robin character has left a Batman character to fight crime in Bludhaven, but not connected to any existing Batman franchise.

Info Wanted : Prequel Deleted Scenes -- those that are, those that aren't
Time

Heh, that'd be fun.  If you had to have Jar Jar, it'd be nice to give him some darker, more serious scenes.  I do feel bad for Ahmed Best...you never hear of him ever doing anything else.

But yes, I wish there were far more deleted material.  I bet that the PT could get such surgery that it might be more in line with what people were hoping for were fan editors to get their hands on much of the still missing material.

Retro Gaming - a general discussion thread
Time

I wouldn't be surprised if he merely meant the third level.  It's a very hard game.  Instead of the very different American release of Super Mario Bros. 2 where you can choose between 4 characters with various powers in a somewhat Arabesque world, picking up and throwing veggies and all that, it's much more similar to the first game.  You bust bricks and jump on goombas.  You can choose between Mario and Luigi, who are actually slightly different in that Luigi can jump higher and farther than Mario, but has significantly reduced traction, often sliding off the narrow platforms.  Super Mario Bros. is a challenging game IMO.  The Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 is simply nigh impossible...now that I wrote all that, I think it was released in Super Mario All Stars for SNES as The Lost Levels, but with cosmetic and other minor differences.  Still, if you're up for a challenge, you should give it a try.
