There was a 6 hour cut of the Phantom Menace
Time

Honestly, I would love to get my hands on that cut.  I'm among a minority, but I think TPM has a lot going for it, ruined mostly by Jar Jar and the bizarre pacing.  The movie moves from scene to scene far too quickly, and yet it ultimately feels boring.  I think a fan edit could cut out a lot of crap, yet extend the scenes so the pacing is improved.  Good cutting could still improve the tension, and ultimately it could be a far better movie.  Again, I think a different cut could drastically improve the film, and a six hour cut could be a good starting point.

So to avoid aggravation and not seem like such a stingy jerk, I have decided to rename the thread one last time.  I do want this thread to have discussion, just not argument.  I think political updates would be best in the other thread, but even if they are here and could be discussed politically, I don't mind as long as it's simply a little discussion.  But if it starts to turn into a debate, that's where I feel the thread has lost its original purpose.  So the new name will largely be the same as the original, with some clarification.

Well, again I don't see a problem with a little digression, but I just was trying to keep the threads separate.  When I have an update that I think will turn political, I usually include it in the politics thread.  At the end of the day, it's not a big deal.  It made sense to me.  And no harm done.  I don't take offense at your style as easily as I used to.  You've got your way of making points (like cat pictures and stronger wording) and I've got mine (like sardonically creating new threads or renaming old ones).  No worries, bro. :)

Believe me guys, I'm all about real models over CGI and I love that the new SW films will supposedly take that into account, but in this very project are AT-STs, and they happen to look very good.  They also happen to be pure CGI.  And while I agree that in many cases CGI doesn't quite look good enough, it seems a metal chest isn't particularly hard to create when compared to the other CGI capabilities Ady has demonstrated.  Again, of course I prefer models.  No need to be anti-CGI just on principle, when it is quite capable of many things.  His reasons are his own, and either way, it looks pretty darn fantastic.  If it's the way Adywan wanted it done, I'm cool with that.  Just asking a reasonable question.

I think because the AT-ST's had to be in motion (which would necessitate motion control photography if Ady had made models), plus the fact they're fairly far away so you don't need so much realism, that's why it was more practical to go the CGI route.

Now Han in Carbonite is a completely static item, perhaps necessitating a motion track for certain shots and it's seen close up. Plus the CGI shirt would have to blend in with the real prop - easier to spot a fake in that instance I think.

Thank you for the reply.  Makes sense. :)

All Things Star Trek
Time

Just finished watching Trek IV after many years.  Still a fun movie.  I think I used to like it better though.  My feelings on Trek are kind of fluid lately, and I'm enjoying the older stuff better than I used to.  III, while far inferior in effects, has really grown on me, and II is still fantastic.  Together, II, III, and IV are a wonderfully well-knit trilogy.  But I think I like them in that order now as well.

Just finished reading Best Destiny.  It gives us an idea of Jim Kirk as a kid, interacting with his father George and Capt. Robert April, first captain of the Enterprise.  I feel the book was really good, but there were two problems for me.  1) the ending is rather weak compared to the excitement of the middle, when young Jimmy and several Starfleet officers aboard a small scientific vessel are attacked by pirates and have to still come off as victors in the end.  The ending, immediately post-Undiscovered Country, where we see how the events of the book have affected old Jim, are rather anti-climactic.  2) Young Jerk, I mean Jimmy Kirk, while an interesting character, is not the same as old Jim Kirk.  That's the point of the book, as the events of the little miscreant's life in the book shape his character drastically and alter his nature so he becomes a much better person.  Still, I have a very hard time believing that it's the same person, and that he had so completely changed by this little misadventure.  Still, it was a fun read.  I can recommend it.

Next book: Federation, where Kirk and Picard met before they got stuck in the Nexus.

CP3S, a timid man always mincing words.  ;)

Oh, you silly boy.  The point of this thread was just to say that something happened.  I recently read that several students were accidentally poisoned in India.  Where would I post that if I wanted to share that here?  Clearly not in the politics page, because it's not very political in nature.  Just a tragedy I feel is worth sharing.  Aha!  I'll create a page for current events, where we can simply say, "Hey, something happened, and I wanted to share that."  Why create another page that ends up being further banter between Mrebo and Warbler, with you chiming in when you've got the time?  We've already got one of those.  Things can get sidetracked, and ultimately I don't really care.  But it seems to me, there is a purpose for distinguishing the threads.  People reread things later.  It's nice to know that if I wanted to find a political discussion, I could look in Politics.  If I wanted to find that link some story that was simply noteworthy, I'd look in the Current Events thread.  You're a guy with some pretty strict interpretations of things and a knack for making overly-forceful points.  Why not grant others the same courtesy?

Once in a while?  Perhaps.  But when "once in a while" comes, it drags on and on and on, when we've got a perfectly good politics page where you and Mrebo can engage in your eternal ideological war.

Mrebo: Are we to be two immortals locked in an epic battle until judgment day and trumpets sound?

Warbler: *sigh* Or you could surrender.

Proboscis - A large mosquito terrorizes a tourist swamp town called Superfriendlyville.  Together, the town sheriff, a visiting entomologist, and a professional bug catcher named Squint, set out to destroy the public menace that has already left a nude sunbather covered in welts and bitten a young boy and a friendly older gentleman who sacrificed his skin trying to assist the sheriff's son.  This film is followed by several sequels of increasingly inferior quality, and will culminate in the holographic Proboscis 19 (directed by Max Spielberg) slated to be released in 2015.  "This time, it's REALLY itchy!"

A Bugger's Life - A Pixar film targeting British audiences about a loser who can't fit in.

[fill in the blank] - A film by Jerry Bruckheimer.

Episode IV: A Ridiculous Hope
Time

I was watching a little Droids the other day and it occurred to me that you could get some hilarious Anthony Daniels lines.  One that he said was, "I don't care if he likes me or not, just get me out of this embarrassing position!" or something close to that.  There are various places you could put a line like that throughout the trilogy, so I'll just suggest it here.  If that sort of thing is worthwhile to you, you could really go to town borrowing his other 3PO lines.
