The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

The last of the Jedi Knights
has vanished. In his absence,
a sinister FIRST ORDER has
risen from the fallen Empire,
constructing a weapon that
can devour entire stars.

Haunted by visions of this
deadly threat, General
Leia Organa mobilizes a
covert Resistance to search
for her long-lost brother,
now her only hope to save
the new Republic.

On a daring mission to the
high priest of the Church of the Force,
Leia’s most trusted pilot
has discovered a clue
to the last Jedi’s fate,
while far overhead,
evil approaches…

I modified the third paragraph to sort of show what I think might be good. It’s just an idea, but I’m curious about your thoughts.

Likewise, what do you think about the Starkiller’s weapon. It would serve much like the Starbuster/Centerpoint Station in the Corellian Trilogy from the old EU.

Petition to give Warbler his Sigh Back
Time

I think that asking for context is a reasonable request, but the crap Warbler has gotten over such a harmless thing has been a big reason why I’ve been irritable lately. He’s a good guy and I don’t like to see him getting mocked for such a minor thing. Sure, run off the jerks for their awful behavior, but the way I’ve seen Warbler be alienated have been truly concerning to me. I was recently called uppity for my attitude, but I really don’t like the persistent and repeated mockery of decent guys.

I approve of this thread because I feel it does show a greater respect for a guy who just wants to be himself, even if it’s a little different from you.

I think your crawl is far too complex and contains too much information (a first time viewer wouldn’t understand half of it, especially in a movie which is a sequel to an episode where everything seemed to be resolved).

This is actually my issue with the original Force Awakens crawl:

Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen from
theashes of the Empire and
will not rest until Skywalker,
the last Jedi, has been destroyed.

In the first paragraph we are told about Luke Skywalker, the First Order, the Empire, and the Jedi. That’s a lot of information for a first-time viewer, and we are never given any indication of what the Jedi do or why they are so important. But I can understand why we might need to retain the line about the fallen Empire.

Here’s a version that explains a bit more:

The galaxy is in peril.
Rising from the ashes
of the fallen Empire,
a sinister FIRST ORDER
is building a weapon that
can devour entire stars.

Without the protection of
the mystical Jedi Knights,
The Republic is blind to this
deadly threat. Only General
Leia Organa, haunted by
visions of impending doom,
mobilizes a small Resistance.

On a mission to a distant
world, one of her pilots has
found a clue to the location
of Leia’s long-lost brother,
the last of the Jedi Knights
and their only hope against
the forces of darkness…

I personally like your crawl and the amount of info it contains. One of my gripes with the original cut of the movie is the lack of information provided: in contrast to the prequels, we don’t understand the politics of the galaxy. What is the relationship between the Republic and the First Order? Where did this super weapon come from? Your crawl answers many questions in relatively few words, so I am pleased with it.

I do have two questions for you based on your crawl: you mention a weapon that can devour entire stars, yet it never does that. I came across this old post of mine, and I wonder if you’d considered a different, non-Death-Star-rehash approach to the Star + Killer Base.

  1. Distinguish the Starkiller from the Death Stars. I think this shouldn’t be too difficult. It’s name is “star” + “killer” after all, and besides a reference to early Star Wars concepts/Luke’s original last name, it could easily be changed to a weapon much like the Centerpoint Station of the old EU, which was stationary but fired a powerful beam at distant stars and caused them to supernova. I imagine a little technical wizardry could easily fire that beam at a star instead of the planet, cause a supernova (witnessed from the ground of Hosnian Prime), and have the supernova destroy the system. Meanwhile, remove our heroes actually witnessing this from Takdona.

So someone (definitely not me) edited this idea before TFA came out on BD/DVD. This individual used a bootleg, it is obvious, but has most certainly purchased the BD since. I believe the individual was afraid to share this idea due to it being made from a bootleg, but he reassures me he pre-ordered the BD from Amazon which arrived on the official release day. He hopes the fact that he did not feel like re-editing this with good footage will not cause a problem. This is just to pose an interesting idea.

Did I mention this is not me?

My other question for you is this: do you think you can squeeze one last piece of information into that crawl? To get such a big actor as Max von Sydow to play Lor San Tekka, have him in such a crucial role as supplying the map to Luke Skywalker, and then kill him off without providing any backstory to him or the village, I feel it was a disservice, and it confused me right away. I feel the fact that his membership in the Church of the Force alone would have interesting enough to fill this hole for me, but without that mention, it’s a disappointing introduction.

The prediction thread

DuracellEnergizer said:

I might, I might not. That all depends on whether Luke dies or not.

I predict that, since Han Solo is dead and Carrie Fisher has passed away, thus necessitating the removal of her character from the franchise, they will not kill off Luke in TLJ.

I also predict that making such predictions prematurely will make the predictors feel pretty silly when they are proven wrong.

Artemis by Andy Weir

It’s not bad, I guess, but after The Martian, it’s definitely disappointing. I’m determined to finish it, though, as I haven’t finished enough books lately.

Here is my final cut, including music:

pass: hux

I believe this music works fine, and I would personally prefer to only use John Williams’ music if possible. But this is how the scene plays out now, so you can make something for it.

Sounds very seamless to me. The only criticism I have is what I posted before. It should either start with Hux telling Snoke of the Republics destruction or if the intention is to imply that they talked about that off-screen, then Hux shouldn’t start with “Supreme Leader, …” as that sounds like the first sentence of a conversation.

Understandable, but in Hal’s words from last page: “I totally agree that such dialogue would be great to have there, but I don’t think the existing material to work with yield something worthy of inclusion.”

I don’t know if it would be good to imply that they’ve been talking by seemingly beginning in the middle of a conversation because either way the left out conversation is still just in our “headcanon” and audiences watching wouldn’t necessarily come to the conclusion that they had that exact conversation just by leaving out “Supreme Leader”. And the imagined left out conversation can still make sense with how it’s presented now.

Would it not be possible to include the video game line and add a slight echo to all of Hux’s lines to help it blend? I like the line a lot, and he is speaking loudly in a vast chamber.

I am for being kinder to people and I admit that I wasn’t always nice to the new members. I don’t mind some stricter enforcement. But the constant weight of a potential ban for a bad day like today is ridiculous. We should all be able to prop each other up during challenging times.

The first sentence in this quote is, by far, my biggest driver for stricter moderation — not because I want OT.com to be a sterile Disney theme park ride where we welcome everyone by singing “It’s a Small World”, but because nobody deserves to be harassed simply for showing up and not immediately blending in.

And yes, moderators may step in if it looks like senior members having a spat don’t appear to be on the path to resolving it themselves. The months-long grudge matches are over. If a “bad day” turns into “bad days” and there’s no end in sight, you can expect us to talk to you about it.

However, no one will ever be banned for expressing their opinion about this place as long as it doesn’t get personal. A little over 10 years ago, we were being compared to Nazis due to some moderator actions, and yet no one got banned. You can feel safe knowing that you can be the same jerks to us you’ve always been (winky…face?).

I have made greater efforts to help new folks feel welcome (though admittedly, sometimes I struggle–sometimes there are some really strange people who pop in and share their antics for a bit). I appreciate what you are going for, and will strive to adjust to the new rules without further griping. I do appreciate the laxity and that I still am able to post here. The moderation team’s willingness to accept harsh public criticism from me or anyone else without banning.

Thanks for your reply. Nice to see you pop in and help explain the reason for the increase in strictness. It’s just nice to have your presence from time to time to add clarity to a situation.

I think I mostly agree with _ender’s message, but the messsaging could use a bit of work.

I appreciate this post and I agree with it.

This is a weird (and oddly troll-like) way to agree.

Troll-like? I’m trying to admit that I was wrong to convey my message in this manner. I can’t seem to communicate clearly, even when I’m being calm.

It just seems unnatural to me to just say “I agree” to criticism when you’ve been defending yourself voraciously for the past couple of pages.

Is voracious the right choice of words?

No matter. I was defending my stance. I don’t think I have defended my method at all, and definitely not in the last few posts when I apologized more than once.
