I try not to get too engaged in this thread anymore, but people do fail to realize that there are economic benefits to drastic tax cuts for the wealthy. There are questions about how the current law will actually have those benefits reach the middle class, but nevertheless, a different bill might be able to spur economic growth in like manner without hurting vulnerable economic groups.

I bring this up, not to say that I adore Trump or the current bill, but to point out that I don’t believe Republicans maliciously pass these bills in order to harm everyone but the richest in America. I’m not an economist and don’t understand these processes all that well, but just because the simply math that is used to say, “Hey, we quit taxing rich people which immediately leads to income this much smaller,” that doesn’t mean that is all there is to the story. I believe that the GOP believes what they are doing is best, even if it turns out they are misguided in this regard.

I’ve said it before, I don’t trust any of our politicians tremendously, but I don’t believe the majority of them on either side of the aisle are evil, mustache-twirling villains either.

Info Wanted: a Simple, effective video editor?
Time

I’m convinced that the free programs I’ve been using weren’t any good. I am fortunate to have located a place that provides older software for good prices (same place I got After Effects) and have obtained Premiere Pro CS6. I am looking at tutorials and experimenting and finding some success so far. I do enjoy the precision of its editing capabilities and hope that the export looks as good as my precise cuts. It’s not at all strenuous on my hardware.

I’m really not too dumb a guy and can be pretty expert in certain fields, but the level of knowledge of the folks on this site never ceases to amaze me. I really appreciate all the help so far.

Going by the popular vote isn’t going to fix the underlying problems with the first-past-the-post system.

No, but the electoral college is a problem that can be fixed without a constitutional amendment.

Such a fix is a workaround, not the true solution, and I’m not sure I favor workarounds. I’m pretty firm in my conviction that if the Constitution isn’t working in some way, then the Constitution should get fixed instead of finding loopholes. Unfortunetly, the Constitution may be just a tad more difficult than desirable to amend.

I have argued this before, but I believe it could help with the underlying problem, though not address it completely. A year or so ago, yhwx and I had a little discussion and he shared some interesting videos. I like the idea of runoffs or ordered preference (whatever the official term is for those) elections.

The popular vote would mean that smaller states don’t have a voice? Well, the electoral college means that several larger states don’t have a voice. The EC, combined with jerrymandering, has skewed election results more and more with each passing year.

Exactly! And I am conservative! I hate that line of reasoning that the states won’t have a voice. Last I checked, the president represented the people, not the state governments.

Info Wanted: a Simple, effective video editor?
Time

I am going do a fan edit. My work will mostly involve insertions and rearrangements. I will not be performing much in the way of special effects. I have been trying out different editors, but I am facing certain challenges. Simple programs like Movie Maker do not edit with precision: I split a video between shots, but when I render the video, it is off by a frame or two, cutting off more than I want or including frames I meant to remove. Fancier programs, like the older version of After Effects I have (CS6), are not conducive to actual editing of clips and are more for effects, and also strain my limited hardware. I am trying trials and freeware of other programs, but either my computer can’t handle them or they do not edit with much precision.

Has anyone found a program that will allow me to rearrange clips and scenes without these kinds of problems? I don’t need a whole lot of bells and whistles, and I can do any special effects later in fancier software once I get the video reordered as I’d like. I just need something basic and effective.
