I like the idea of making the Skywalker Saber unstable like Kylo’s.
That would mean changing the visuals and sound of the saber during the whole movie, i don’t think that is something posible or pratical for a fan edit.
Is not as easy as changing a saber color (at least that is what i think).

If this was some Indy film then “just Rey,” sure.
Well to be fair, TLJ is almost an Indy film and this is a “sequel” to that (well it isn’t but it should be), Rey skywalker would have worked if she was a “nobody”, but the last skywalker being a poweful jedi related in someway to palpatine feels wrong

You just summed up my current feelings on this movie. It’s definitely the weakest movie of the new trilogy, but I don’t think the constant hate for it, especially on this site, is warranted. I think it can be turned into a worthwhile movie with a bit of editing magic.
I really really hate the movie :d, but for the sake of our sanity we should all focus on fix what we have …

You know what. This abomination really put TLJ into perspective for me. I finally appreciate the story decisions Rian made in relation to Rey, Luke and Snoke. Rian opened JJ’s mystery box, discovered that there’s really nothing there and made his own story. JJ went back to the old discarded box, and…also found nothing.
A shame that a lot of people just say " TROS its bad because TLJ!" without any thought

The problem is that his intentions are not clear, so he wants kylo to kill her first, then he wants to take his body, then he discovers the dyad and uses it to recover… i don’t know if he had a plan with rey and kylo to begin with or if he was making in it on the go.
Exactly. JJ had no idea what to do with his own characters.
Is funny that Rian didn’t use the Knights of Ren on the throne scene because he didn’t want them to be wasted, but JJ didn’t knew what to do with them, so they were useless and were killed easier than Snoke guards.

I love that, that phrase makes Rey spiral towards the darkside much more belivable and in line with TLJ.
So it would be
A) Palpatine failure of son/clone, which was abandoned because it didn’t have the force, was a piece of s**t, sold rey for drinking money to Unkar Plutt without knowing that she had the force like his father, Palpatine senses Rey power once she grows up or the dyad and wants her dead or to obtain the Kylo/Rey dyad power to fully recover.
B) Palpatine failure of son/clone, which was abandoned because it didn’t have the force, was a piece of s**t, sold rey and to Palpatine which had a force vision of her power or the dyad in the force and thought about using that power to fully recover, Unkar Plutt was going to take care of her until she was old enough to meet kylo and for the dyad to happen.

Rey palpatine wouldn’t be so jarring if her parents truly sold her from drinking money, were bad parents or palpatine didn’t care about her, the parents being so lovely and leaving her just to protect her , feels too much like a retcon from TLJ (her being from an special linage is already a retcon).
“You have no place in this story, you are nothing” was made with the intention, to point out that her actions were what made her special and crucial the story, not her linage or relation with someone important, she being a “evil princess” is not only a bad copy of the OT with luke and vader (Rey doesn’t even know and care about palpatine in the previous 2 movies), it negates her character arc and agency.
The optimal way to fix TROS but still mantaining “canon” is to make or imply that Rey is related to palpatine in some way, but with neither her parents or palpatine caring about it, nothing of “take my throne!” or “she is special!” crap.
Hal, did you scrap the idea of the TFA/TLJ duology? without the deleted scenes the duology edit sounds more interesting.
Is legally possible to crowdfund some kind of animated version of Duel of Fates, at this point?

WOW , that is an extreme measure! i loathe TROS (is reductive , uninspiring and dumb) and love TLJ, but i don’t think that TLJ would work as an finale, is too open ended, with questions as:
If you want you can make massive alterations to TROS (no rey palpatine, no palpatine, no jannah or zori, sith troopers being under kylo’s command), but i don’t think that dropping TROS altogether is viable.
although i would prefer for an improved TROS over that, enjoying a fan edit so different to the actual movie , gives me the sensation of enjoying something that is not real, the sensation of indulging in a headcanon.
While John Williams has been a consistent architect of music for these films I think that some of these sequences would be better served with no music, just the fight and the sounds of the world around them. Sometimes less is more.
The death star battle is the last big duel of the trilogy and saga, i don’t think that is ok for it to not have soundtrack or to have a score less memorable than duel of fate
Other thing that bugs me, and would like to know if is possible to fix in the edit.
In TFA when the option to sell BB-8 becomes available, she looks sad and refuses to sell the droid because she KNOWS that she was sold. Her parents, selling her to a slaver because they “loved her and wanted to protect her” sounds bad and not only is pretty cliche, it also feels jarring with the ending of the movie.
So Rey decides to take the skywalker name and act like the skywalkers are her family forgetting about the parents that she just discovered actually “loved” her and sacrifice their life for.
Rey palpatine’s would feel less jarring with the previous films if her parents were actually selfish and actually sold her from drinking money.
Having a truly dysfunctional family, would make “Rey Skywalker” and the message of deciding one’s path and family, more meaningful and would keep the weight of the revelation in TLJ for the most part intact.
The message of “bloodline doesn’t define you” doesn’t have any weight when her dad was the direct son of sheev and was a “decent” and “good” person.

I wish that angle was never put to film, but I’m not sure I want to go that route. We’ll see but I expect that won’t change.
I agree, i despise Rey being a palpatine and TROS with all my heart, but i’m sure that every other fan edit out there is going to take that out, i’m looking forward to your fan edit to see if you can make a good film of TROS for what it is.
Edit: It looks like the art of TROS is out there, it could help us to see the intention behind some of the decisions and what some cut scenes could be.
I don’t know if I should mention this or not, but have you seen the list of scenes cut that we may get come the Blu-ray release. This post should be taken with a HUGE grain of salt, though.
