Sending the SEs back

LOL!

You know, I was so pissed off at Lucas for all of this, but, you know, I wonder if sending the SEs back to Lucas would really accomplish our goal. I mean, if all we really want is the OUT on DVD, is insulting his preference for the SEs really going to accomplish anything but make us his enemies? Just thinking out loud.

Nah, never mind. He threw the gauntlet down when he made that idiotic statement for that MTV.com article about how this release of the SEs w/the OUT as mere bonus material would PROVE "...whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved [sic] versions".

DVD WRITING CAMPAIGN - WEEK TWO - "Sound & Vision" Magazine
Time
Hello, all possible watching eyes. If you are active in this writing campaign but have simply not posted to the thread, please, sound off here with a small post to let us know that there is, at least, some support.

Just trying to show Lucas and the public that there is demand for the OUT on DVD even if the upcoming, sub-standard DVD release doesn't sell well. Thanks.

DVD WRITING CAMPAIGN - WEEK TWO - "Sound & Vision" Magazine
Time
Sent two emails, one to David Ranada's attention and one to Sound & Vision Magazine itself.

Everyone who is upset with the September DVD release: Please, help us expose it as the substandard release it is. Giving our money to Lucasfilm for an inferior product isn't the only way for us to show them that there is demand for the OUT on DVD!

How George Lucas created the O-OT fanbase...

Yeah, that's sad. I read an article about how HD-DVD, while inferior to Blu-Ray in its tech specs, is MUCH more cost-effective for a production line change-over. A process is in place right now that can convert your standard DVD production line into an HD-DVD one in 5 MINUTES!!

Whereas, Blu-Ray requires an entirely new and, thus, costly set up. Bummer. Blu-ray so has it over HD-DVD as far as its possibilities.

Maybe with tech advancements happening as often as they do, Blu-Ray (or a version similar to it) will supplant HD-DVD in the near future.

What are you going to do with your SE discs?

He really has no clue.

Either that, or he's playing dumb to protect his precious SEs.

I wasn't up for this campaign earlier, but if I end up caving in and buying this release, I'll definitely be sending the SEs back to Lucas.

Regardless of how this all turns out, there's got to be proof that we fans can point to that shows that sales numbers aren't a true reflection of demand.

What about everyone sending their discs to one person to send as one big batch to Lucas so that the send-back couldn't be ignored? Just thinking out loud, but what does everyone think?

No problem about the reply. Not that site spoofing hasn't been done in the past, but since the site seems to be a legitimate source of entertainment news in French, and since the negative review of the DVDs follows the fears that have flowed from Lucasfilm's own admissions of the source of the OUT, I don't see much reason to believe that this was a hack.

If LFL sends them review discs, they're under no obligation as to what to do with them. They can use them as frisbees if they want... Maybe they did tell them not to make screenshots, but I doubt they could have had them leally obligated to follow that "direction".
I know that international copyright is covered by that InterPol agreement from the 1970s, but I'm not sure that press rights are the same across international borders. And if they're not (which is almost certain; case in point: Communist China), who's to say Lucasfilm can't have them sign a contract on what will and will not be allowed with the review?

It's a mute point now anyway, since we can see screen caps!

'Nuf said.

Remember what Lucas said about the OOT not existing....?

We are not necessarily cornered here by Lucas' disingenuous tactics. To paraphrase:

"There are alternatives to buying."

That's what our writing campaign is all about, exposing this release for the sub-standard offering that it truly is.

It's only a "brilliant catch 22" if we believe, as Lucas seems to want us to believe, that we have NO power to do anything but buy the DVD releases. Jay's original petition is proof of our power as SW fans.

As these DVD transfers do not meet industry stards, I must repectfully disagree.

I agree with Mike. Who would've thought when they signed the petition that the OOT would get relegated to back-seat bonus material?

Not me.

Well, there's the official line as I received from Lucasfilm Ltd. Publicity Rep John Singh that the LaserDisc source is the source "which represents the best restoration that has been possible on the original movies".

Whether this means that there doesn't exist a print or that Lucas won't allow a print to be made available is open to interpretation. Theories abound since Lucas went on a Star Wars film recall spree years ago and apparently destroyed all the prints he could get his hands on.
Wouldn't it be funny if they came out and they were anamorphic after all LOL

That would be a fantasy come true...

1. It was inaccessible at the posted url.
It is accessible. Click the very bottom link, then navigate back to the previous page to clear the ad that originally appeared (mine was for "Arrested Development Season 2").
2. You cannot prevent reviewers from making screenshots - that is protected under the news and documentaries clauses (which are embedded into the basic copyright laws that all countries respecting copyrights observe).

Are you sure about France. If they mad an agreement with Lucas for the privilege of previewing the DVDs, why couldn't that be a contractual stipulation. The DVDs haven't been officially released, right? So, it's not like the French website could have goten their hands on copies without Lucas' help, right?

DVD WRITING CAMPAIGN - WEEK ONE - "Entertainment Weekly"

Hey, Mike. A month would put us past the DVD release, so it most likely wouldn't be big news to the magazines anymore.

Now, if someone had a seedy inside scoop on the decision process inside Lucasfilm that resulted in NOT putting the OOT on its own release, then that might make it into print after-the-fact.

As far as the Mr's you mentioned, I think someone already PM'd Jay, didn't they? In the previous thread ("Addresses and Contacts")? I don't think I know the other two gentlemen.

The menus DO look like what I'd hope for in AN INDUSTRY-STANDARD DVD RELEASE, but what about the disrespect Lucas is showing us AND the films with these LaserDisc-sourced discs?

Man, what are we Pavlov's dogs? Salivating at even the slightest glimpse of what the OOT DVDs should be on THEIR OWN FRONT-AND-CENTER DVD RELEASE with NO SEs IN SIGHT?

Even Cosmo Magazine is Talking About the 09/12 Release...

Well, perhaps Cosmo is talking about them but very few others are. I just spoke to my brother who works at Blockbuster and he said they have received absolutely no promotional material for this new release. In fact, if it wasn't for me he wouldn't even know they were coming out.

Sounds like the kind of promotion Lucas would want to curtail sales and "prove" that no one wants the OOT on DVD.

We may yet be able to do something about the one-sided "proof" that Lucas is looking for by writing various magazines, which we've started doing at the thread DVD WRITING CAMPAIGN - WEEK ONE - "Entertainment Weekly".

Our goal is NOT to change this release, because that would be impossible at this point, but we still may be able to be vocal enough to show that sales of the DVDs alone are NOT proof-positive of non-interest.

Don't let Lucas lie to the world and deny the OOT an industry-standard (at least) release in the future!

Mielr, yeah, let's extend it. EW is a great target. I've had one person who I PM'd tell me that they'd like to help but that they were currently busy.

How about announcing the writing targets the Friday before the writing week, so the campaign doesn't get lost in the shuffle of a new or mid-week? The new thread could be something like "Such-and-such Magazine - New Writing Target as of Monday, 08/28/06".

What do you think?

theredbaron, point taken. Just having a little fun.

All, I've PM'd a number of people now, and we are gathering a little more support, but we could still use A LOT more. Tell your family, tell your friends, tell your enemies, but, most of all, tell someone! The thread has all the info they'll need to make their Entertainment Weekly letters ready to send.
