Sorry to hear that the overall edit didn't please. If Marvolo's suggestion of including the "Birth of the Rebellion" scenes would fit, it would be nice to make Padme more of the substantial character she should be.
Wishing you the best on your exams! Can't wait to hear more about your project!
Originally posted by: Marvolo You can see footage of the deleted scene of Obi-Wan visiting Padme in the production diaries on disc 2 of the ROTS dvd.
This is very exciting news. Is the scene complete? Or is it a behind-the-scenes look?
Edit: I just scanned through the "Web Documentaries" bonus materials, and I saw a bit of one cut scene between Padme and Obi-Wan where he greets her with kisses, but there was no dialogue. Is this the scene? Is there more that you've found?
Very creepy picture. I was hoping for something a little more fantastic, though, a little less raw than a mouth scar from ear-to-ear.
But, having just typed that, it really does bring a reality to the character.
I just hope that they don't forget that Batman is still a comic book character, and that the representation of evil doesn't need to be stomach-churning.
Originally posted by: Marvolo I don't have a full edit of ROTS done. I mostly get seperate sequences and try to improve them rather than doing a full edit. Keep this up and you just might. Aboout Anikan's vision in Padme's apartment, I have tried just using the dream part up until the part where Anikan comes out of the dream and lowers the data pad then wiping to another scene before he looks up at Padme'.
How does that seem to work? What throws me off is that Anakin had just been with Obi-Wan, and they shared a lot of scene time with the Council and Farewell scenes. There never seemed to be a cinematic hint that Obi-Wan might be visiting Padme without Anakin's knowledge.
Not to mention the fact that the vision doesn't seem to be tied well visually to Anakin siting on the couch in Padme's apartment. Until then, Anakin's visions had only been in his dreams (right?). This new development should have been made important with a close-up on Anakin's eyes maybe.
Hey, kerr. Very cool story-telling. I love the flow of the sequence where you inserted the deleted scene "The Plot to Destroy the Jedi". I can't wait to see more. Your edit looks and sounds very promising. Can't wait to share some more of my stuff with you and the forum once I get some time.
Marvolo, I really like your idea about continuing Anakin's frustration from his farewell to Obi-wan directly to his talk with Palpatine. Lucas' lack of development and follow-through on character emotion is a major flaw which your approach improves. We never really get to finish a character thought with the original cut. Is your cut available to check out?
About Padme's apartment scene, it seems to me like something needs to be done with it since it is only tenuously tied to Anakin's vision of Padme and Obi-wan. If it wasn't simply cut out, it might be a good opportunity to see Anakin's resolve to save Padme, but maybe it could come in somewhere before Obi-wan leaves so Anakin's jealousy seems a little more real? Any thoughts?

Couldn't agree more. Case in point, Lucas rewrote Star Wars lore for the PT which had originally been accepted as cannon prior to the PT.
From the book A GUIDE TO THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE, SECOND EDITION (copyright 1994): A solid black Rebel Insignia next to the entry for "Jedi Master" denotes that the information was drawn from an original Lucasfilm source such as the films, the radio dramas, or the original novelizations. The entry reads:
"The most powerful Jedi Knights eventually evolve into Jedi Masters. Jedi Masters are teachers and miracle-workers of extreme power and ability. Jedi Masters have moved beyond the need for weapons such as lightsabers, preferring to depend solely on the Force to give them strength[my emphasis]. The Jedi Master Yoda trained Luke Skywalker after the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi. [ESB]"
"[ESB]" denotes that the sources for this info are the film EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and its novelization.
I've looked in an updated edition of this book, and the entry has been changed to eliminate this idea from Star Wars history.
Originally posted by: kerr Darkhelmet, your take on the Mace/Palpatine scene is really good. It doesn't introduce the plot hole that my version does, but still makes it bearable to watch. I'll probably use a variation of it in my final version. I'm glad to hear that you like my cut of the scene. I'd be honored for you to use the idea. I hope you don't mind me borrowing from you. Anything else you'd like to see?
Yeah, I'm really interested in seeing how you cut the bridge scene together, but I'd also like to see the "Plot to Destroy the Jedi" inclusion, the first Jedi Council scene ending with Anakin sitting down, and Padme's apartment scene cutting to Anakin in Palpatine's office.

Lucas needed to help script-polish Spidey 3. That way when Peter is dumping all that sand out of his boot after his first fight with Sandman, he could say something compelling like "I hate sand. It's rough, and course. And it gets in everything." Then cut to Peter's proposal-date where he says to MJ ... "Unlike here. Where everything is soft. And smooth. I love you Mary Jane Watson. You are in my very soul, tormenting me."
Then when MJ says "I can't believe you shared our kiss with her" have Peter reply with something really deep and moving. Like, "I'm haunted by the kiss that I shouldn't have given. I hope that it doesn't turn into a scar."
Add in some important expository scenes with Venom where he says, "How can you take pictures for the bugle and NOT have a staff position? It's insulting. And Jameson is worse ... he's overly critical ..." *throw an empty film canister* "In most ways ... I'm actually better than Peter Parker. It's all Peter's fault. He's holding me back!!! AND I HATE HIM!!!!!" *quivering lip*
Add in a few floating robots in the background for no reason whatsoever and it won't be so silly.

Sounds cool. Glad to see the Wookie battle gone. I was thinking of doing this for my edit (if I can ever get more time for it).
So, how does it all flow when you watch it? Is Grievous completely cut from the film? How did you handle the bridge scene where Anakin takes the helm after the fight?
I really like how you are creating a stronger plot with the inclusion of the deleted scene "A Plot To Destroy the Jedi". You're cliffhanger ending to the Jedi Council scene where Anakin is begrudgingly allowed to be part of the Council is also very cool. Episode 3 really missed the mark on being a mature film by treating the scenes so childishly.
As I look over your changes, there is a lot there that I might have to borrow. Regarding the Mace/Palpatine scene, I did a cut of this which might help your story flow. It does include the lightning transformation, but I think it downplays it and leaves what really happened open to interpretation. You can download it here if you'd like.
Holy crap, GM! Just watched part 1, and it rocked! Made me feel like I was watching a real John Williams Star Wars movie in spite of Lucas's blunders. Nice work.
Originally posted by: ADigitalMan Should be. It could be in a 4:3 with a ton more letterboxing (like the GOUT) but a 16x9 video window is an anamorphic source.
Okay. Cool. Good point about the GOUT. Things could definitely be worse. Thanks, ADM.
Interesting idea, ronlaw. I'll keep that in mind. Not sure how it could work out with the footage, but all suggestions for resolving this blunder of a plot point are definitely welcome. Thanks.
Jedi_jra, your ending makes so much more visual sense to me, not to mention having a better story-telling sense. Lucas definitely lacked subtlety with connecting these final threads to the Original Trilogy.
Also, the static shot of Bail, Yoda and Obi sitting around that conference table onboard the Tantive never sat well with me since it was shown directly after the shot of the ship zooming into Naboo. Cinematically, it didn't match. The Tantive zooms in to land, and, BOOM!, we're on a wide interior shot of the ship with NO movement! Putting that sequence in as the Tantive actually touches down on Alderaan works so much better.

Then what is the big deal about Lucas anyway? I don't even think he is the producer, just executive producer, someone else will be actually managing the daily production chores. Lucas' importance just seems arbitrary.
Zombie, Paramount is most likely handling the advertisement and distribution of the movie, while Lucas, as executive producer, would be providing the funding.
