Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

I just watched the above sample I posted, does it have issues, certainly, but for what it is, and at a very low bitrate, it definitely has promise, also that was 720p instead of 1080p which I prefer.

Thanks Dr M I will have a look, keep the suggestions coming, OH and speed is a non issue here, quality all the way.

Thanks EVERYONE, and thanks Moth3r for that link, I will look into that as well, now I have a tech question for you guys, when replacing a monitor, do you have to uninstall the drivers(to the old monitor) before adding the new one, or can you just hook up new monitor and go?

and the goal is BD25, I can do either way but not sure I will need 50 GB's LOL, hell maybe I can replace all the ac3 files with the raw PCM's, sure would be nice to have hairy_hen's files in 6 mono lossless wav files, if I did I could encode DTS-HD MA 5.1 files instead, now that would ROCK!

Like I said, there is going to be people that could care less and are going to make comments that it will look like shit no matter what, I don't care, I already accomplished 1 thing I wanted to do, and that is make it look better by processing it on my PC instead of letting my Sony BDP-S350 do it on the fly, so I am already a little happy, and all my tests have been 1080p, I am actually going to try out some 720p versions now, but if I don't see much difference I am staying with 1080p, and I am so happy I just got a 1920x1080p 23" HD monitor for my PC today delivered by UPS.

So if interested in this, please by all means comment and offer suggestions, I REALLY want them, even if you think they won't help, still say them, and if you are not interested, well I know what I want to say.

OK I have a question for the few that actually follow this thread LOL, does anyone know of any good uprez scripts, filters, programs, etc? the reason I ask is I have been doing a bunch of sampling of different things I have come across to try and make a V3 BLU, yes that is right, a Blu, now I know there are going to be people to say that the GOUT is shit and there is NO way it will look good no matter what you do, well you know what, I say screw that, I have done quit a few samples now of upconverting on my PC and encoding and watching on my 65" HDTV, and to me it looks pretty damn good, better than I expected, now is it pristine\perfect\same as the HD files already available, HELL NO, but it does what I want it to do, it looks better than my Blu-ray player upconverting the V3 DVD, and that alone is worth it to me, also this will have a nice menu system, and it will feature ALL the extras that are on my V3 set and maybe more, plus I figure why the hell not take a stab at a Blu, GL is not going to.

ps. Have any of you guys seen some of the retail Blu-rays of older movies released recently? some look pretty damn bad, but it is still better than it's DVD counterpart, maybe not by much, but a little better.

@zombie84, OK everyone seems to think those Technicolor pics are what SW is suppose to look like, and nothing else, so what in your opinion is the gauge for ESB and ROTJ to look Theatrical? I would assume you CANNOT just carry over the settings from SW to the other 2.

also is there a place where those Technicolor prints can be downloaded at a higher resolution?

Thanks

The whole film is way off. The shot-by-shot colouring is pretty fucked, especially since it seems that many of the problems were ones the 2004 set created in the first place. In terms of colour information, usually its all there which is good, but the colours have been boosted and manipulated in unnatural ways that often makes them look ugly (i.e. skin tones, colour casts, popping, inconsistent colours, desaturation, oversaturation). In some ways its easier than the GOUT because the colour is all there you just have to tweak each shot, but that shot-by-shot manipulation is a lot more work than the GOUT which mainly just requires a gamma and saturation boost. If you look at Mike Verta's page on CC'ing the 2004 version you can see it is a lot more work than it looks at first. Wouldn't Adywan have already done this though? He probably has a CC'd 2004 master sitting somewhere from before he began editing and vfx work.

I don't know what Mike Verta's page is, so never seen it, and damn if this just doesn't get more frackin confusing every damn day LOL, because when it comes right down to it, NOT everyone is going to happy with whatever coloring is done, everyone see's things differently, like you have people thinking lee's attempts in his new thread is the end all, be all, GOUT settings, well to me and a few others, they still don't look right at all, but whatever, that is his thing, and that is cool, I just wish we had something 100% concrete SOLID to gauge with(and a good video source) I also have been using your ideas and giving them a shot in AE, they do look promising, so is that the general consensus here that color tweaking the GOUT is easier than tweaking the 04's? and I know the 04's are the SE, just pretend it isn't.

Damn this wouldn't even be an issue if they were just released the way they were back then LOL.

I have a question for you guys here that are like me and do not hate the SE's LOL(that said I prefer the OT, but SE's are still cool) I have read, and have heard, that the 2004 SE is pretty close to the right color scheme for Star Wars or ANH if you prefer, so that said, does anyone know which scenes are still way off? this would help in my next project but I am big time lacking in the correct color dept., I assume most of it is right, please correct me if I am wrong.

*edit, I probably should have said possible next project, I might be setting my hopes up way to high.

@ zombie84, I have been doing some reading on your site, very informative, I also read that you said the 2004 DVD's color is better than the 2006 GOUT, which I 100% agree, but that is the SE, so are you saying that the 2004 SE DVD's look better than the 2006 SE DVD's or are they the same? I just looked through my retail collection and saw that I have the 04 and 06 SE's, but I have to admit, I have watched neither LOL, so I was just curious if there was a difference between the 2 SE's, I assumed that the 04 DVD was just packaged with the GOUT bonus DVD and that is it.

Thanks for your time

Here's my attempt at colour boosting the GOUT:

(warning it's a very large image)

http://img573.imageshack.us/i/goutcolourboost.jpg/

Now every shot has the same settings. All i did was this in After effects:

First i added the levels filter & very slightly lowered the white level (this eliminates blown out high levels that can be caused by the next step), then added the colour correction filter & very slightly lower the red highs & midtones to make the white point white instead of having the red tint.  Next i added the hue/saturation filter & boosted the saturation level to +26. last step was to add another hue/saturation filter and lower the red saturation to -23.  Boosting the saturation levels any more in step 2 and the colours are just too oversaturated  and it looks horrible.

This worked for the entire move apart from one scene which was the lars homestead sale. This already seems to have the blues boosted so all that would need doing for this scene would be to drop the blue & cyan saturation to equal levels (about-11 each). there is already some nasty video noise in the sky tones for this scene in a few shots so not much can be done about that. I have made a preset that can be loaded straight into after effects is anyone is interested in it.

Can I get that preset you mention? OH, and which version are you using or does it matter?

I like that you kept the CBS/FOX logo at the beginning, that was a nice touch.

Funny thing, that was a last minute addition, I did have it all done without it but changed my mind, I wanted it to be exactly like the LD, chapter stops and all.

Also when you get a chance, can you email me what you think on the other question asked?
