Info Wanted: ESB/ROTJ Audio Mix questions...
Time

OK, I don't know if I should post this here, or in my own thread, or start a new one, but I want to put it somewhere I know it will be seen by those that can help me with this, now that I am gaining more and more experience working with audio, and actually hearing the difference between "ripped" Digital PCM and "captured" PCM, the "ripped" Digital PCM sounds damn great! so since I am not done with my final Blu-ray Set yet, I was thinking I would love to get my hands on better quality audio for this release.

So is there anyone here that can help me in getting these files, if they are available that is, "ripped" not "captured" at the Laserdiscs 16bit/44.1kHz? these are what I would like to find, hell, I am not even sure if all these even have Digital PCM, so correct me if I am wrong please.

Star Wars
1985 Stereo Remix:
- 1130-85   (grabbed from newsgroups, thanks Mallwalker)

The Empire Strikes Back
1980 Theatrical Stereo:
- 1425-84

The Return of The Jedi
1983 Theatrical Stereo:
- 1478-80   (grabbed from newsgroups, thanks Mallwalker)

Thanks

Did anyone ever decide to capture the 1985 mix of ESB? Was the only difference to this changed levels?

Bumping this question again. Has anyone captured and synced to the GOUT the 1985 Digital Sound from the 1986 Japanese Special Collection (SF148-1242), 1989 Special Widescreen Edition (1130-85) or 1992 Full SCreen Digital Sound (5651-80) LaserDiscs?

Out of sheer curiosity I plan to do a 1980 in channel 1 and 1985 in channel 2 side by side mix just to hear this for myself. If anyone has done this or is halfway there, I am interested to see how they are getting on.

Russs, I just ordered the special collection on ebay, and I'm planning on ripping the audio at some point later this month.  I also have the Special Widescreen version, which I'll also rip.  I'm going to compare the rips to choose whichever is mastered better.

Ripping or capturing? there is a difference, I wish I had "rips" to sync up to my projects instead of a capture, but capture is still way better than nothing at all, but I just recently got The Terminator ripped Digital PCM from LD and it does sound better than my captured PCM, hell I can't even remember which LD's I used for which audio, I really need to start keeping notes, I PM'd CA to see if he remembers.

But if I could get actual "rips" of the audio, I would definitely re sync all audio over.

What is the best brand of blank optical media?

Incidentally, where do people buy their Verbatim blanks?  I've been buying from Amazon, without any way to verify they are the Singapore blanks.  Fortunately those are the ones I've always ended up with, but I'm always slightly apprehensive I'll get the Indonesia ones instead.

Amazon is where I get them to, I think it says somewhere in the description where they are made, supermediastore.com has them as well, and sometimes Best Buy does, but BB is a little more expensive, unless they have them on sale, which is like once a year for only a few minutes LOL, but obviously in Store is a lot better, you can then physically read the package.

Tayo Yuden DVD5's

Verbatim DVD9's made in Singapore

Verbatim BDr's

ALL other brands SUCK BAD! they do not hold up, and I read some of you say they do(like crappy ass Memorex lol) well let's see in a few more months, or another year even, sorry but that is not a chance I want to take, when I burn something I want to be confident that I will be able to grab that Disc anytime and know for sure it is going to play and rip.

*My opinion only based on all the reading I have done, and because of the TONS of blanks I have burned and shared over the years.

Just got my new custom Blu-ray burned with Dark Jedi's mono PCM Laser disc track (long live Laser Disc;) and jj666's DTS-MA track he made from the Blu-ray's 5.1 PCM track. Watching now and I gotta say, seeing Terminator in HD along with the original audio is fucking awesome.;) A real treat. I can see no issues with the sync. It's perfect all around. Thanks you so much Dark Jedi for putting this together and making it available to the rest of us.

No problem at all, I am glad you like it, I have the ripped Digital PCM files coming soon for Conan The Barbarian, I can't wait to put that in sync with my Theatrical reconstruction Blu-ray project.

Sounds great!  It's good all the tracks will be fixed.

I've completed all the main channel edits for SW except the opening flyby, so there's just that and the LFE channel left to be done.

One edit is actually going to be unchanged from the previous version.  For some reason I find the explosion before 3PO gets in the escape pod to sound tinny in the '85 mix, while the '77 stereo track seems a bit more robust, so I'm leaving that one the same as before.

Sounds good to me, I trust your judgment 100% on this, so what sounds good and right to you will work for me.

A stupid question, but are you THIS Mike Verta ? http://www.mikeverta.com/

Anyone else check out this site?  Watching the video, I was reminded of the old joke:

"But enough about me... why don't you talk about me for awhile?"

Apparently the only time he's not self-congratulatory is when he's letting other people congratulate him :)

I am glad I am not the only one that see's that, but I will keep the rest of my opinions to myself.

OH, and I still agree with Stinky LOL, I am glad he is only updating this at his own site now, who needs 1 small picture here, 1 piece of a picture there, hell, how do we even know for certainty that these images he is showing are what he says they are?

Would be interested in the PCM audio, but I haven't got the BD yet. I heard the image quality was not much better than the DVD.

[OT: DJ, would you consider doing The Full Monty original audio project? The BD had the American soundtrack. I have the UK LD with the original Dolby Surround as PCM.]

I don't know, I think some are to hard on the video quality, sure it is not the greatest, but I think it is better than the DVD for sure, I am good with it until a possible remaster comes out.

I don't have that BD, but I guess I really would not need it yet to do this, but if you could upload the BD audio(to sync to) and the LD audio I could take a look at it, just make sure you give me some time, it took me a whole afternoon to do the new Terminator audio, I did have to walk away from it once in a while LOL, my eyes and ears need a break after a while.

Also, is your PM's cleared? I can't PM you the Terminator links if your inbox is still full.

I just read the last few pages of this thread.

So, this will never be released to the general public?

Honestly, who gives a fuck then?

If this won't be released I can't imagine why anyone (but the creator of this project) would care in the slightest.

LMAO! I actually agree with you on something.

d_j, there is only those two frames of the fleet that is missing in the NTSC causing the audio to be two frames ahead from that moment until that frame on Endor which instead is not on the PAL causing the audio only one frame ahead from then on. IIRC the PAL GOUT also have lots of more solid black frames after the end titles, that's why the difference in frames are larger than 1 frame in total when loading the files in VirtualDub for example.

Well before I can figure out what I am going to do, I will first need to see how h_h approaches this, if he fixes it on his end, then Harmy and I won't have to, but if not, then I will then have to decide on what approach I take.

For all you Terminator fans here, you probably already know how different the new mix is on the Blu-ray version, and I am not sure of this, but maybe some of the DVD versions as well, I am not aware of all the changes from the original to what is on the Blu, but a member at blu-ray.com asked me to take on this project, he was going to do it but could not, but he did provide me with the ripped laserdisc’s 44.1kHz LPCM track, so I was wondering is there any interest from the members here for having this in complete sync with the Blu-ray video? I actually finished it yesterday and burned myself a test copy and it all looks and sounds good to me, listening to this audio was actually pretty darn cool, so let me know if anyone would want links for this new audio file.

The 1 big difference I noticed right away was some of the gun shots, when the Terminator killed the first Sara Connor, and then Sara’s girlfriend, the gun sounded terrible on the Blu, but the gunshots on this new track sounded like it was from the Dirty Harry movies, much better.

*edit - Well I tried to google the differences between the 5.1 mix and the original and can’t find anything specific, I was hoping to find a link or some info so I could post it here, I actually would like to know all the differences myself as well.

Thanks for all the updates hairy_hen, so this is confusing, so exactly how many frames are different from the NTSC Jedi & the PAL Jedi? looking at the link msycamore posted, it seems DM found 2 missing, but then Red5 said that they are there, but then he found a different one missing 141780, but then reading on it seems that is the only frame missing, so there is only 1 frame missing from the PAL Jedi or am I missing something? so why is everyone saying there is 2 missing? where is the other one?

Also I do not care about the bad IVTC frames in Empire, those have been fixed, not for V3 but for the Blu, I know this is not about that, but since it was also mentioned in the post msycamore added, I figured I would let you know.

@hairy_hen, I am getting the other 2 files you need today, I will send you a PM when ready.

Hey Harmy, it's all good between us, nothing has ever changed, I am still here for you, and you know how to reach me when you need anything, I have never let you down before, and I do not plan on it now, there are very few members here that I actually respect anymore, but you are definitely 1 of the members I do still respect, and call a Friend, but I like that you mentioned my project being used to help you achieve your goals, it is so funny how these followers did not know that already, makes you wonder.

Cheers Harmy

Also to the members that have PM'd me from this thread, all is good, my project is in no jeopardy of being scrubbed, it is going forward and will be available once finished, if you have read my thread you would have noticed Harmy said I was redoing them, well he is correct, some of us here do work with each other a lot more than you think behind the scenes.

It has nothing to do with piracy, or donating for a specific project. I'm offering to donate for a new computer. What you do with that computer... wink wink motherfucker.

Some of us will donate money and Dark Jedi will continue to donate transparent jealousy.

Yeah you got me, you are so full of shit, I would like to continue, but you Sir are absolutely not worth it, we know what you are here, it is pretty transparent, you add nothing but stupid crazy comments.

Not jealous, more dumbfounded at this whole situation, $1500.00 for a PC to work with the Blu-rays that he has said more than once he had no interest in using, so yes, it is truly amazing to me, but its all good.

Yeah, that's exactly why I'm hesitant about this.

On the other hand,  Ady's doing it big time and there don't seem to be any problems. And my current equipment is seriously deficient for this kind of work (for example, even when everything is running smoothly - and it hardly ever is - it takes about 3 seconds to render each frame of the 1/2res preview when working in AE, so my work could be much faster with a better computer) and with the money I currently get, I can barely support my living in Pilsen, so donations is actually something I've been playing with in my mind for quite some time, but still, I always thought better of it for those reasons that Puggo talked about.

How do you know Ady is doing it "big time"? that is somewhat of a pretty bold statement don't you think? $1500.00 cash is "big time" lol.

I watched the sample and it certainly seems right to me. You might want to specify in the title "american theatrical version" it's my understanding (people  correct me on this) that other countries always had the blu-ray ending with the princess.

Not to mention, I think in the UK, not sure, wasn't some of the Horse tripping scenes trimmed?

The hardest part now is to try and color match the sources, I would like to make the whole thing look more like the theatrical scenes but it might be a lot easier to change those few scenes to match the Blu-ray, hell I just don't know, at least I know it will work, video wise that is, but I am not going to start work on the audio options until I know that the color match will be successful, I plan on having my already edited DTS-HD MA 5.1, and my DTS-HD MA 2.0 custom made Isolated Score, and the LPCM from the Theatrical LaserDisc.
