Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

Just please keep in mind that it will be the video file only, you guys will have to swap it out with the V3 yourselves, I no longer have any of those files and to be honest, most of my time is for the BLU V2 really, I just thought that this would be a good alternative for the DVD Folks.

That being said I need some help from someone, could someone make up a how to on switching out the video files with the V3 DVD and keeping the chapters and such? then I could include it in the torrent with all the right programs needed along with the new V4 video file, this would be greatly appreciated, I think Ady had a how to somewhere, or was that for audio? I can't remember.

Thanks

Thank you, but it is not just me, my partner You_Too is just as deep into this as I am, it is SO nice having a full fledged partner this time around, but he is seeing how painstakingly tedious this is\will be, and there are times when you wonder, "why in the hell am I even doing this" I spent most of my day just preparing a script and rendering the bad frames to fix them in SW, plenty of times I just wanted to walk away and fire up my Xbox lol and relax, but I stuck with it and now it is done and ready for encode.

But Empire, oh boy, Empire, this is going to be a real treat, or I mean a pain in the ass!

plus I am building yet another PC, I am building my 11 year old Son a very nice Gaming PC like mine.

Ah, didn't mean to give You_Too the rough side of the pineapple! Thanks to You_Too as well! Anyways, I think you hit the nail on the head with "why in the hell am I even doing this." Anyone who has ever started a project has reached that point. Flat out, it's because we love Star Wars. In all of our whining and bitching about George Lucas and Lucasfilm and the Blu-Ray release and the EU and the Prequels (etc.), I think people are too apt to forget just how good the movies are (I don't even mind Jedi that much either). Flat out, they are phenomenal. I hadn't watched them in a while, so this past weekend I broke out your V3 DVDs and watched them all, and despite how many times I have seen them, I was blown away. Those movies were groundbreaking. It is unbelievable how well the effects have held up. Star Wars is over 30 years old, and the space fights still do it for me. Some of my housemates ended up watching with me, and it turned out that two of them had never seen the originals. They had never actually seen Han shoot first, or heard Yub Nub. Not to be cliche, but it was somewhat magical watching them get to experience the same thing that people in theaters did all those years ago. Just incredible.

Funny thing you mentioned the V3 DVD's, along with the BLU V2 I am going to use that lossless avi from from that project and encode a new DVD video file(V4 if you wish) if there is interest and it can be swapped out to make a new V4 DVD Set, these will be encoded at the same bitrate as the V3 but will have all the enhancements of the BLU V2, then I will upload them to Spleen, again if there is even any interest in DVD video.

That's great to hear DJ! I can't believe this much success has been had by using the GOUT. It makes me a little sad to see how much success true fans are having with such a sub-par source, because it just reminds me what Lucasfilm could have done themselves. Oh well. At least we have fans like you picking up the slack. I think lost in all of the nitty-gritty technical discussions and occasional bickering, we are all ecstatic that you have taken on this project, and very appreciative for the time and effort you have put in. Thank you very much for the hard work! I can't wait to see the results

For those interested,
It's time for a short update on things, we really made some headway lately, at least on Star Wars, we are concentrating on 1 film at a time, where in the past I would jump around lol, but anyways here is where we are at currently.

First, Star Wars is rendered, I am going to encode it tonight, and I said that we may not do any frame fixes and just leave it "as is", well we didn't, we fixed quit a few frames, more so than I did when I was planning V2 on my own, and again, the color is just friggin cool, I still can't believe that it can be brought out and look this way, it really is very cool, I know I sound like a broken record on this but I still can't believe that this is the "Bonus DVD's" lol.

Second, the new 85 Home Remix that I got ripped from the LD and not captured, is now in synch and all I need to do is just go over it a couple more times and render a new lossless wav file and encode a new DD file.

So as you can see once I have my encode, all we are waiting on is the updated Menu files, and the possible new files from hairy_hen, I PM'd him a few days ago to get an update but have heard nothing, so if this falls through, well then the default track will be the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track that is on the V1's, so at this point I have no idea if these are still going to be done or not, sorry.

Well that is it for now, I will probably post a sample video soon with audio.

OH, and for those following that have the V1 Set, yes the menu's are getting a little overhaul, mainly to include subtitles.

So the changes from V1 to V2 are primarily this,
1. drastically re colored, a lot more vibrant and more theatrical. (Thanks to You_Too) plus some other enhancements with cropping etc.
2. now for the first time ever on any of my projects, it will include subtitles.
3. redoing some of the audio because now I have better rips and not captures, plus I think we are getting updated files from hairy_hen at some point and I will encode a new DTS-HD MA 5.1 file.
4. slightly revamped BD menu's.

Well if we can't find it(Italian subs) lets just scrap it, we have plenty of other stuff that needs a lot of of our time to finish, so if no one can provide any then lets just use what we have and move on, I would love to make a test BD of SW sometime soon lol, very anxious to see the new color on my HDTV and not my PC monitor and to look over the new menu's, as well as hear the new audio.

So lets give it just a couple more days You_Too and then move onto some other portion of the project.

Star Wars is rendering right now, it will be done in a couple hours, then we(You_Too & I) will fix some of the bad frames, then I will go to work on the audio, then we are going on to Jedi, it has less bad frames, Empire is by far the worst so we will do Empire last.

Are we approaching the time when we could see some screencaps?  I'm excited to see the new colors (and the burnt-in subs, but that's just me).

Catbus, if you have been reading this thread at all DarkJedi has said over and over again he doesn't do that. You'll have to wait like the rest of us.

Thanks vbangle, I am unfortunately having to put some on temporary ignore for the time being, some of these requests are wearing very thin on my patience, especially since I already explained how it will work.

Take care my Friend

updates to follow when we have them, that is how it has always been with me.

Why is it 25fps???
Sounds horrible.

and you've gotten aliasing artifacts as well.

Harmy does his work at PAL framerate. The actual release will be at the correct speed.

Don't know what's up with the aliasing, either...

I'm confused. Why would you do it in PAL to slow it down to NTSC??

I have always wondered the same exact thing all the time myself lol, but that is just how he does things, I can't stand the PAL speedup either, it is just "horrible" as you put it, and I just can't take it at all.

So what do we have so far, or will have? is this correct?

English, Swedish, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Danish, Finnish and Norwegian, did I miss any lol?

Not italian. Yet, at least.

OK, so we still need that one, or possibly ditch it.

So is it called Brazilian Portuguese, or just Portuguese?

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Dark Jedi and everyone involved with the V3 trilogy and the unfinished Project Blu for the enormous amount of effort, dedication and skill that you've put into these projects.

I've been following this forum for a while and although I can't really offer to help finish Project Blu (very little experience in video/audio editing or film preservation I'm afraid), I really appreciate what you're doing to preserve the star wars theatrical trilogy. Such a shame that it has fallen to dedicated fans to do this (although I wouldn't be too surprised if a long way down the line, after the 3D cinema and 3D blu-ray re-releases of IV V and VI, the theatrical versions are eventually restored and released properly on dvd/blu-ray - maybe in 2017 for the 40th anniversary of star wars. Though by that time we will probably have had to sit through Empire Strikes Back 4D with a CGI Yoda poking his walking stick into the audience and vents on the backs of cinema seats so the audience can smell Vader's breath.)

That being said your V3 trilogy is easily one of the best star wars theatrical trilogy preservations I've seen, and the screenshots from Project Blu look astonishing. Very much looking forward to it and happy to help in any way I can.

Thank you for the comments and I truly hope you enjoy this Set when it is done, the color is astonishing lol, I still can't believe that this much color could be brought back out, it really is a site to see, and when the time comes, we will definitely need BD blanks for testing and such, because these are still far from being as cheap as blank DVD's.

The PAL GOUT has subs in those languages, and they are available on the newsgroups.  However they are in graphical format so you need to OCR them, and OCR is very hit-or-miss, requiring manual correction unless you want the occasionally incomprehensible subtitle.  Also some of the GOUT subtitles are simply wrong.

Well that is to bad, I was hoping I could just drop them in,. because I obviously cannot go over Foreign subs, don't know any other language, hell I do not even have time to even read over the English subs, I still have a lot of video work to do, including bad frame fixes, and still have a lot of audio work that needs to be finished, so now I just don't know.

CatBus, I do not think that format will work for blu-ray, my menu guy said it has to be what I posted above, and the subs I would like to add are these,

English, Swedish, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and maybe more if I can get them in the format I need, plus I do not want to use the theatrical font for the subs, I want to use a normal looking one like used normally, and which font that is, I am not sure yet, but SW theatrical will not be used.

Infinity, just keep an eye on this thread for when I start accepting them, and like I also said, I am going to be a lot more pickier about who I let join in this time for the above posted reasons.

Thanks

By the way I forgot to give you guys and update on things, Star Wars is rendering right now, it will be done in a couple hours, then we(You_Too & I) will fix some of the bad frames, then I will go to work on the audio, then we are going on to Jedi, it has less bad frames, Empire is by far the worst so we will do Empire last.

Hi Everyone,

I am wanting to know if anyone knows how to make subs for BD's? nothing is set in stone but we may add in subs this time around for BLU V2, I was told that the format for these subs are BDN, which is an xml control script and png graphics, and the languages I will be looking for are these, English, German, Sweden, Spanish, etc.

I think if we can add these to this release it will make it that much more professional looking, because this is the only thing missing, aside from different audio tracks which I will not include, there is just no room with all the other options.

Thanks, and again, this is not set in stone, we are looking into it for right now to see if we can do this without having to redo the entire BD menu system I already have.

The only problem I see for now is the frame fixing that was doing on my almost V2 lol, depending on how I feel about it, and if You_Too wants to help on that, it was all for nothing, because the color is so dramatically different this time around, and we cropped it much better, so none of what I had before can be used, so it has to all be done over, or I will just leave the video "as is".

That's completely up to you. Make it the way you want it. Doesn't matter what anybody else might think or say about it. It's your work and time that has gone into it. Make it the way you want it. Congrats on a job well done and I still can't get over that sick rig of yours....

Funny you should mention that lol, early next week I will be building a new PC for my 11 year old, he came up to me after building mine and asked why is he the only one in the Family with a whimpy PC, so now he is going to get one almost exactly like mine, the case is the same only a mid tower not full, he will have 8 GB's RAM and not 16, and he will have 1 video card like mine, not 2, and his CPU will be fan cooled not water, so it will be a "mini me" lol.

Hi DJ, do you have a screenshot comparison of the "almost V2" and the new "DJ+Y2" version?

No I can't, I have gotten all those files off my PC as to not get anything all mixed up, and ESB was never fully finished because I broke off to finish Conan.

Understood.. I only ask because I'm curious as to your comment about the previous frame fixing which would essentially be "wasted" and how the cropping (?) is much better this time..

I guess I do not know so I'm ignorant as to why the previous work was wasted - I always assumed that Y2's work was built on top of the G-force script - hence it is a significant but "related" improvement and work. And the comment about cropping threw me too.. Cropping? Why would it need to be cropped? Can we spare those pixels? ;P Sorry, I think I've missed something important here..

Absolutely not, so we can stop mentioning that script, we accomplished what I wanted to do in the first place but I could never do it fully myself, You_Too has done it, we eliminated that script altogether, there is none of it used this time, so it is all us only.

Also I want to mention that I am already getting PM's from members wanting to donate blanks to project BLU V2 so you can be first testers and to have an actual hard copy of the Set in hand when we finish, well at this time I am not making a list, it is still to early, but I will say that this one is going to be a lot more limited than any before, my last BLU donations did not go very well, I had some that did not even let me know when they got their packages, and I knew they did because I track them, let alone give any kind of feedback whatsoever, whether good or bad, either in this thread, or by email\PM.

The only person at this time that is guaranteed a Set is You_Too, so he will get one sent for sure, that is the least I can do for my partner.
