OT Special Editions to have USA Roadshow Summer '16

I guess it’s nice that someone’s screening it and actually bothers to note which of the many versions it is rather than just calling it the OT as if that’s actually what they’re showing.

Yeah, i dunno. One one had this is pretty cool, It is what i would say is probably the most original version of these films you could expect to see at decent quality. Knowing how faded many of the OT films are, i can’t imagine there would be any success trying to screen those if they had access. (but what do i know). But it is hard to get overly excited about this, when it is the SE, and what we REALLY want to see is the OT.

I am still on the fence if i am going to try to make it to one of these showings with an old college friend (He was the one who first explained to me that there was an OT - when comparing my SE vhs set to his pre SE vhs set). It would probably be a fun event.

The Alamo updated their event website with a bit more text!

ABOUT

“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…"

It’s been 39 years since audiences first heard read those words on movie screens. Thirty nine years since we first learned of the Force, of Jedi, lightsabers, X-wings and the Death Star. But as we all saw when ticketing sites across the world crashed after the tickets for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS went on sale
last fall, the Force is still strong with us all.

This August, the Alamo Drafthouse will celebrate our love for the movie trilogy that changed so many of our lives for the better, with incredibly rare screenings of the original 1997 special edition versions of A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and THE RETURN OF THE JEDI.

Working with iconic performing arts venues in 16 U.S. cities, we’re hosting fan screenings of all three movies back to back to back (don’t worry, we’ll have room for bathroom breaks between features), so fans will be able to watch these classic adventures in rooms filled with thousands of other devoted STAR WARS enthusiasts!

We’re hoping to see crowds of people dressed in their finest Jedi robes or Galactic Empire uniforms, so start working on your costumes now (or just dust off your favorite from your collection). Live emcees at each event will host costume contests and trivia games, and we’ll have photographers on hand to capture all the excitement.

We are still working feverishly with all of the venues to set up all the final details we need in order to get tickets on sale, and expect to be announcing a new on sale date soon. When we announce that date we will give everyone ample notice to set aside time to get tickets, so don’t feel like you have to be obsessively checking every social media post between now and then.

I am just gonna post my unofficial x264 mkv of 2.7 on the spleen, but I need to have permission so that I can post it, so can I, just post it?

Pretty sure I wrote something earlier, while being helpful on how to compress your own version, stating very clearly to do so only for your own personal use and NOT to share it anywhere, ESPECIALLY since you don’t know what the Hell you are doing. For the love of God, the last thing you should actually do is share that anywhere, it would be a complete disservice to the Despecialized Edition effort. No one here wants you to do it or would be at all okay if you go ahead and do it anyway. If you like watching your own version that most of us who know more about video compression would consider unwatchable, that is good for you; please don’t contribute to the problem of us having to deal with complaints from people who get files like this and think the problems they encounter have anything to do with the creator-endorsed versions.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

I just viewed up to the main menu of the SW 2.7 bluray, and i really like how you put this together, very polished and legit looking. good job!

I would echo requests i heard to include the Threepio subtitles. Having a child, i use subtitles way more these days than i used to, so it would be lovely to have them included!

And if anyone out there has the ability to provide a higher quality video of the original 77 star wars trailer, it would be nice to have a less block main menu. but you do the best with what you have!

The 3 disks are BD25s. The video stream from Harmy’s MKVs was converted to a 720p bluray compliant format that Adobe Encore could understand, but bitrate for the film was kept as high as possible.

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but weren’t the video streams already Blu-ray compliant?

Would there be a way to swap the original stream back in, but keep your awesome menu intact?

The second card looks like it comes from a Doris Day movie. 😉

well i don’t know who that is (am i too young?), but that second card reminds me of “lets all go to the lobby and get ourselves some snacks” style clips my local drive-in shows before shows and during intermission. It has the same coloring and font. Seems out of place in this movie though.

The colour alignment will make all scratches and dirt become ‘tri-colour’ as they are not ‘misaligned’ to begin with, so it does make quite a difference for a grindhouse style viewing.

I wondered if that would be the case. I would say don’t do colour alignment then (would it be possible to see a picture of both scenarios?)

A true grindhouse would have the colour misalignment, as that is what is on the print 😃

What resolution, filesize would people want a grindhouse to be, and would you prefer the intermission cards left in or removed? Colour aligned or not? (It won’t realign perfectly unfortunately, but can be improved a lot), missing frames left as is?

Cast your votes here.

And yes, more funds for more HDDs would be great, as I am currently working without a net, and it has already cost me time when the RAID0 working space decided to ‘unraid’ a few days ago, costing me a couple of days tedious work to have to redo.

i would vote for the grindhouse to have:
1080p at around 20 gb, so that we can see all those scratches nice and crisp
no strong feelings about title cards
realign color unless it messes with scratches somehow?
leave missing frames missing

For what it’s worth, I liked the falcon making the water spray and chocked it up to repulsor lifts like most others seem to have.

This is it exactly. Doesn’t look like a jet flying over the water, but it does kinda look like a helicopter flying low over water, and I think it’s exactly because of the “repulsorlift” technology they mention.

i just stopped by to say “agreed”.

I emailed my local (well, most local) Alamo and this was the response i got:

[…]
It has definitely NOT been cancelled. Our corporate offices are currently preparing web posts with updated information about the show. […] Due to slightly bizarre screening legalities, the STAR WARS films cannot be played at primary movie-screening venues like the Alamo so that’s why we are forced to think a bit outside the box on this one.

Tickets will go on sale sometime on May 4; we don’t have an exact time pinned down for that quite yet.

When we know more specifics, we’ll be sure to let everyone know. But it’s still moving forward, so fear not! For that is the path to the Dark Side. 😉

Did I miss a post this was responding to, saying the screenings are cancelled?
Because that is what I found out today.

I was going to post in this thread earlier because I work for a (non-Alamo) theater, and we were set to screen all of the films.
The story is Lucasfilm said no when they heard Fox has ok’d these screenings (apparently without consent from Lucasfilm).
How it is even possible to make a “mistake” at that level, no one knows.
Again, my theater isn’t part of Alamo. However, we absolutely obtained the right to screen the films through the appropriate channels (the only channel). Only they didn’t check first with Lucasfilm??

Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but I doubt anyone - including Alamo chain - is going to be screening the films.

Well i think there is way too much “i think” type of commenting going on, thats why i contacted Alamo directly. (I guess you may have a better insight than some as you work at a movie theater, but you are still just reporting hearsay) Until i hear otherwise, i am going to assume that they are still trying to find a way to screen this. That is why they are picking non-movie theater locations.

I’m reporting hearsay, and you’re thinking the Alamo Drafthouse CINEMA chain represents a “non-movie theater location”?
When a theater is denied permission to screen a film - having used the ONLY LEGITIMATE avenue to secure the rights - it’s hardly hearsay, it’s the official answer. There’s a lot more “hearsay” involved in a rumor that there is some sort of loophole for non-theaters, like the Alamo Drafthouse CINEMA chain. For the record, the theater I work for has more non-film events than the Alamo Drafthouse CINEMA chain.

What you’re correct about: 1. way too much “I think” type of commenting - on your part, because you want to see the films; 2. Assuming Alamo is still trying to find a way to screen them. Like the other theaters that were denied the chance. Big refund hassle + loss of revenue + wasted time/money in promotion.

Countdown until Alamo refunds: well underway.

OK?
