Frankenstein (1931) Audio Preservation (Released)
Time

So Iā€™m pretty close to the end of the movie. About 55 minutes in. Went back and re-tweaked a few scenes and made tweaks to others but Iā€™m getting stumped trying to properly sync the scene where the villagers go to the gather to see the burgomaster. Hope to work around that maybe tomorrow and hopefully more or less have the rest of the movie completed tomorrow if not Saturday. Almost there! šŸ˜‰

I think Disney/LF was trying to clear inventory of the 2011 versions. No different than how the 2019 DVDs also had the 2011 versions. It was just more simplified to have the 2019 versions pressed on standard BD for the saga set.

Can you clarify what the 2019 Blu-ray scans were? This is all so damn confusing. According to whatā€™s spoken about on page 7 they make it sounds like the 2019 blu rays are the ones you want if you want the new scans, but I was under the impression that no new scans/color corrections happened to the movies until the 2020 releases

No the 2019 versions are the same that are on Disney+ and in the complete Saga set. It was the 2019 INDIVIDUAL BDs that reused the 2011 versions. No additional changes were made for 2020.

Sorry no updates yesterday. I was tired and my hand was/is still sore so I took a pass on working on this yesterday. But anyways I worked on it a bit today. Iā€™m fortunately past where I was initially by the time I had chosen to start over so thatā€™s a plus. Furthermore side one of the LD has been more or less syncā€™d up! Yayy!

Anyways I used the BD audio again to restore the ā€œGodā€ line blah blah blah you know this but Iā€™m also gonna make a separate track when this is all complete that has the censored audio of the scene from the LD (incase anyone wants that for whatever reason). The following scene with Baron, Victor, Elizabeth, and the Burgomaster syncs perfectly, had to make minor tweaks during the transition to the next scene to sync that properly, but after that things get kinda crazy.

The discussion scene between Henry and Waldman syncs fine, the Monsters intro syncs fine but around the time the Monster rises from his seat looking up at the light it gets slightly out of sync but I fixed this. It then stays in sync til around when Fritz runs in. I was able to fix this but after that I had to make some compromises.

First it goes out of sync midway during the portion where they all are trying to restrain the Monster. Given this is the final scene of side one another issue I knew I would have was properly transitioning side one to side two. I again turned to my trusty VHS audio to fix that transition but there was still the matter of the last portion of the previous scene.

Well basically from the point of them attempting to restrain the Monster to the end of the scene the LD audio has been slowed down so the tail end will more or less sync up with both the VHS and BD audio so itā€™s not exactly a proper sync but the results donā€™t look (or sound rather) that bad. Presently Iā€™m up to the dungeon scene. Had to make a minor tweak early in that scene but so far it seems to be syncing properly.

Anyways thatā€™s about all I got for now. Hopefully will have more tomorrow if not Christmas. Hope everyoneā€™s well and safe and Happy Holidays! šŸ˜ƒ

The standard BDs in the saga set use the 2019 masters while the sold separately standard BDs use the 2011 masters.

Iā€™m in the same boat looking to buy the NEW color corrected blurays (I donā€™t have a 4K tv) Are you certain about what you said? Seems crazy if true. That Disney released TWO different versions of Blurayā€™s? Do you have proof of this somewhere? Thanks.

Itā€™s discussed in this thread.

So Iā€™ve kinda back tracked a bit as in I more or less started over. Not because something was messed up but the perfectionist in me thought it best to back track and see how much of the LD track lines up with the BD track. Fortunately Iā€™m up to the lab scene again so it wasnā€™t a total waste.

Also Iā€™ve discovered some interesting things about the tracks from doing it this way. For example some of the timing of the dialogue in the scene where Elizabeth and Victor visit Waldman is different on both. Elizabethā€™s line ā€œHow? How? Please tell us everything whatever it is!ā€ is actually slightly OUT of sync on the BD while itā€™s IN sync on the LD! No joke! Victorā€™s ā€œrabbits and dogsā€ line also had timing differences but I wasnā€™t able to really do much with that given the timing between his and Waldmanā€™s lines but I doubt anyone will notice.

Will tackle that damn ā€œGodā€ line (no blasphemy intended) tomorrow and hopefully at least finish up side one of the LD. Iā€™m off Wednesday so I definitely plan to work more on this then. Hoping to have at least a test track completed either by the end of this week or sometime next week at the latest! Stay tuned for more updates! Until then good night! šŸ˜‰

So a quick update. My wrist was hurting like hell today so I didnā€™t get to spend as much time on this as I wanted to but I messed with it for a bit. Anyways I basically got it all to sync properly from the time Henry leads the guests upstairs to the actual creation portion of the scene. Somewhere in that section it starts to go a bit out of sync so I did some tinkering with that.

Now for the subject of the ā€œGodā€ line. Well not much to say. I decided to use the BD audio again for that section as I did when re-editing Moshromā€™s track. Sadly there is no ā€œflawlessā€ way to restore this line but I did the best I could.

Technically some audio is lost during the transition of the creation scene to the scene that introduces Baron Frankenstein. Nothing crucial, just had to drop some audio crackle during the transition/black screen to keep the next scene in sync. Anyways thereā€™s where Iā€™m at presently. I also had gone back and did some adjusting to an earlier section of the film. Hopefully will tackle a bit tomorrow either before and/or after work but until then good night! šŸ˜ƒ

Ooooooffff definitely need a break from that! Anyways that bit where I said it goes out of sync around the point that Henry and Fritz come down the stairs took me a bit of time and editing to get right but so far I think itā€™s coming along ok. Will definitely have more time tomorrow to focus on this but wanted to give a quick update. Anyways have a good day for now everyone! šŸ˜‰

Some quick updates. To keep this fresh I started this over completely from scratch including redoing parts one and two (yes I used the VHS audio to fix the transition). I also decide to ā€˜upā€™ the LD audios volume to be more on par with the VHS audio. Anyways I basically have it in sync up til when Henry and Fritz come down the stairs to tend to the people at the door. There itā€™s getting a little tricky but Iā€™m trying some things. Have work during the day tomorrow but hopefully will work on this for a bit tomorrow night. Iā€™ll keep yā€™all posted! šŸ˜‰

Whatā€™s your opinion on the BD in terms of picture quality?

One of my friends wasnā€™t a fan of it

For what it is I donā€™t think itā€™s bad but then again I sorta miss the grainy and dirt speckled look of the VHS/DVD versions but I understand thatā€™s just not the era were in anymore and thatā€™s fine. My main complaint is the tweaking they did to the sequence of Henry and Fritz pulling the cart with the cadaver up the hill.

I was pretty disappointed in the blu-ray after growing up watching it a bunch on VHS. Really looking forward to what youā€™re working on.
And if someone could PM me a link to the work already completed Iā€™d greatly appreciate it.

So Iā€™m actually in the process of working on my own sync attempt mainly for my own curiosity since I figured out how to manual adjust speed for video and audio tracks in this program Iā€™m using. This isnā€™t taking anything away from anyone on FanRes whoā€™s contributed to this project, I just wanna see what Iā€™m able to do on my own. Anyways so far I have this.

  1. The first few seconds I will be using the VHS audio up to til right after Van Sloan says ā€œHow do you do?ā€ to restore some audio crackle at the start of the track missing on the LD audio (I believe I mentioned this in a prior post). After that it cuts to the LD audio.

  2. The LD audio more or less syncs up with everything up until the end of the lecture/brain stealing scene where I noticed thereā€™s an edit in the LD audio during the transition to the next scene. Iā€™ll likely fix this with the VHS audio as well.

Thatā€™s about all I have for now but I will continue to post! šŸ˜‰
