That's amazing... I'm exactly the same way. In fact, I've even done my own CD labels for the discs, and I used Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for that very reason. It goes along with the whole idea of this being Star Wars, but from a slightly different perspective.

Here's a couple of samples of what I've done (the resolution here is crappy, sorry):

Amazingly, I was able to find a McQuarrie picture to match the story on each disc of not only Star Wars, but Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi as well.

Another thing I like about the NPR series is the catchy episode names! Aren't they great?

They do totally make me feel like a kid listening to a radio drama set back some time in the '50s.

I found Perry King (the voice actor for Solo) to be one of the most "off" actually... along with Brock Peters (the voice for Vader). Nonetheless I've been enjoying these dramas too since I acquired them. It's quite cool to experience Star Wars again in a new, slightly different, and expanded way. My only problem is that I like listening to them as I go to bed, and I keep falling asleep during Episode 6. I think I've listened to Ben and Luke go into Mos Eisley about 20 times now.

And yes, Ann Sachs does a very impressive Leia... almost as impressive as that Mark Hamill guy doing Luke Skywalker

Now there is a base of fans out there who just love a good 2 hour popcorn flick that just wows them in the visual department, and the PT does that.

But for anyone to consciously say that SW & ESB are not the two best SW movies, I almost laugh at them now. There is a debate as to which is better SW or ESB? And I seem them as 1 & 1a, but the rest of the movies from a pure movie perspective are utter shit that have moments that wow a SW fan, but not a movie going fan. Sure ROTJ has the great throne room scenes, but you have to love SW to enjoy it. Sure the duel in TPM is a high octane with the music blaring and the stunts ratchted up, but again, the average movie fan could care less. SW & ESB can appeal to a mainstream audience who is just looking for a great film to watch, the other 4 movies just please some of the SW fan who have kinda found their niche as to what they like. Do you notice the PT fans always rave about ROTJ the most out of the OT? Cause it focuses on Vader more then any other OT movie, and that is the story they like, and that is why they can't take a step back and realize the movie is average, just like the PT movies.

I totally agree. I think the entire 6-part Star Wars saga is fine for what it is: a series of entertaining, immersive fantasy films that can be enjoyed by people of various ages. However, ANH and ESB go beyond that and are examples of truly good cinema. I think that's an important differentiation people have to make.

That being said, I think it's equally important to take a step back from the nitpicking sometimes and remember what one reviewer (whom I believe appears on the 2004 OT bonus disc) said, which was: "... and it's just fun... It's fun watching Star Wars."

In a way, I think you just described why I dislike the second two films a lot more, especially Sith. They include/attempt a lot more meaty ideas... and fail, to varying degrees of awfulness, at all of them - ESPECIALLY the most important ones. That, to me, makes them vastly more painful to watch. They put on parade exactly how terrible at storytelling they are. And many of those moments are classic plot points (a checklist of things we have been waiting for, as an earlier poster put it), which I would much rather not see at all, than see butchered. The Phantom Menace, meanwhile, aims lower, and comes out cleaner for it. It might not be better made, or have more "artistic" value to it, but at least it's not pretentious.

Like I said, ROTS is not without its faults... the dialogue is still terrible in parts, Anakin's turn to the dark side occurs too quickly, and some scenes/characters are there purely to appease the fans and give them eye candy (e.g., Chewbacca, Kashyyyk). However, as a story it's the best conceived of the PT. That's not to say it was delivered well on screen (although I think it showcases some of the best performances in the PT), but it is a movie that can be enjoyed by people outside of the Star Wars fan base.

That being said, I understand what you're saying about The Phantom Menace. In a sick, weird, twisted, diabolical way it was the closest movie to Star Wars (ANH) in the entire PT: light-hearted, adventure-filled, innocent fun.

I will also say this for TPM: when I left the theatre after seeing it for the first time, all I could think about was buying a lightsaber. I guess it must've done something right

I must admit I'm a little baffled at how people can think TPM is a better film that AOTC or ROTS. How anyone can sit there with a straight face and say that a film in which any one character had as much screen presence as a turnip, and which featured a developmentally delayed, sickly-looking alien rabbit and fart jokes, was good?

Admittedly, I was more excited about seeing Menace than the other two, but it was the first Star Wars movie in 16 years, and the hype it generated was something that the sequels would have been hard pressed to match. In the end, I think TPM was fun but much too childish for a Star Wars film, not to mention poorly acted. It was also, quite simply, unnecessary in terms of exposition; character introductions and the establishment of setting and conflict could have been set up within 30 minutes. A feature length film was not necessary to accomplish this, and in fact I felt that the story was stretched too thin as a result.

While the other two prequels definitely have their flaws, at least there was some meat to the story. AOTC offers up an assassination plot, a mystery, an (attempted) love story, and the outbreak of war. Then, with ROTS (in my opinion the best of the PT), you have a story that truly adheres to the classic definition of a tragedy: our protagonist (Anakin) undergoes a change from happiness to suffering (Anakin to Vader; married to isolated), often involving the death of others (Padme) as well as the main characters (the Jedi; Anakin himself in an Obi-Wan Kenobi-ish kinda way), resulting from both the protagonist's actions (Anakin deciding to save Padme at all costs; killing the Jedi) and the inescapable limits of the human condition (Anakin's fear of isolation; greed; his need for control).

Like I said, it's hard to defend any of the PT, as it just didn't have the same magic of the OT (or at least ANH and ESB), but to say that TPM was good or better than the other two is a bit hard to swallow.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, Luke lowers his glass in one shot, then lowers it again in the following shot. Trimming a few frames after the cut should fix this and not interfere with Luke’s lines

Trimming the frames just won't work. luke's hand & glass would still be in view when his lines start

Wouldn't that be okay though? In the preceeding shot, the glass has only begun to be lowered. Not a big deal either way, I suppose.

I'm very happy to hear so many of these issues have been dealt with already. I'm especially anxious to see what you do with the Death Star screen of Yavin, as well as to see Chewie receive the medal at the end (sorry for not noting your comments on that earlier).

I think perhaps the most impressive thing you've done thus far is your ability to do this edit while simultaneously posting on these boards

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Hey Adywan,

I’m aware of how many comments, ideas, etc. people offer you on a regular basis regarding your edit, and I feel kind of bad adding to the list, but I was watching the 2004 DVD of ANH last night and I noticed some things which I don’t think have been addressed yet in this thread. Below I’ve noted some errors/inconsistencies that you might want to consider. I apologize in advance for mentioning anything that you might have already addressed.

ERRORS & INCONSISTENCIES:
- In the scene where Vader is choking the Rebel, the placement of the stormtrooper’s legs in the background is inconsistent
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/245/pic02zm4.jpg

- In the scene where Leia is stunned, one of the stormtroopers is missing the “hash marks” on the sides of his ventilators… can these be added?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9554/pic03tk5.jpg

- In the scene where Aunt Beru asks Luke to get a droid that speaks Bocce, there are some bushes that appear inconsistently between scenes
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1603/pic04ia8.jpg

- After Uncle Owen decides to purchase C-3PO, there is a wire visible behind 3PO’s neck… can it be erased?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8769/pic05cj9.jpg

- When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, Luke lowers his glass in one shot, then lowers it again in the following shot. Trimming a few frames after the cut should fix this and not interfere with Luke’s lines
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2121/pic06pk5.jpg

- When Luke is eating with his aunt and uncle, it’s daytime in the background, but in the following scene when Luke goes outside it’s sunset. Can you play with the light level in the background of the eating scene to match the binary sunset scene?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3324/pic07kt5.jpg

- C-3PO’s eyes are blue for a moment when Luke surprises him in the garage
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6050/pic08oh2.jpg

- When Luke and company enter docking bay 94, we see R2 climbing down the stairs as the camera pans right, then seconds later we see him join Luke and Ben. Given how fast R2 is descending the stairs, this would be impossible. Any possibility of fixing this scene by either erasing R2’s head toward the end of the shot? Or possibly by making R2 tackle the stairs like he did in AOTC?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/904/pic11wj8.jpg

- As the Falcon escapes Tatooine, we see someone walking away in the corridor, yet everyone besides Chewie and Han are seen buckling themselves in moments earlier in the cargo hold. Can this person be removed?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2831/pic12gz3.jpg

- Since you’ve changed the graphics for the Death Star when R2-D2 is plugged in, will you also be changing the Death Star graphics shown in the briefing room? (I was thinking you could use the AOTC graphics first, then keep the existing FX and just change the colour to red, like this:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/359/pic16gx1.jpg

- The numbers on the Death Star’s countdown should be changed to Aurabesh (as you did with Luke’s macrobinoculars) for consistency
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1323/pic18vf1.jpg

- Every time we see the numbers on the targeting computers in the X-wings, they should be changed to Aurabesh for consistency
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2789/pic19hq6.jpg

OTHER CHANGES TO THINK ABOUT:
- I’m not sure if this will be addressed during the colour correction, but I think the pink flashes during all shootouts in the movie (especially on the Tantive IV) should be more red than pink
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/1567/pic01ml9.jpg

- Have you thought about changing Ben’s krayt dragon scream (when he scares off the Sand People) back to the original sound effect? Or perhaps using an entirely different effect altogether (perhaps something from Jurassic Park)?

- Are you planning to edit out R2-D2’s “beep” just before Ben removes his hood and says “Hello there?” (the sound effect was not present in earlier versions of ANH; it occurs at 00:30:05)

- The Duros’ hands in the cantina are mismatched (one has human-sized hands in white gloves, the other bare hands with much longer fingers). Any possibility of making their hands consistent?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3672/pic09dx7.jpg

- I know you changed the background behind R2’s head in a certain scene as it looked like the background on the Death Star (I believe it’s the scene immediately following the Falcon’s fight with the TIEs, right after 3PO says, “I think I’m melting.”). If that’s the case, I just wanted to point out we see a similar background while R2 is playing “chess” with Chewie (at 00:59:53, 1:00:02, and 1:00:31). That being said, it MAY just be the panel on the Falcon… not sure.
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/5714/pic13kg2.jpg

- In the scene where Vader and Tarkin just find out Leia has lied to them about the Rebels’ secret base, Vader’s hands move but there’s no dialogue… think you might trim this scene and omit this?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/2185/pic22pn7.jpg

- As Ben’s making his way to the tractor beam controls, we see a group of stormtroopers marching, but one’s armour on the arm is falling apart – can this be fixed?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/823/pic14ct0.jpg

- Since you’re changing the blue Rebel insignia on the pilots’ helmets in the hangar, will you be changing them to red in the briefing room as well?
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/5188/pic17oh4.jpg

- The explosion of one of the X-wings is pinkish in parts instead of orangish/yellowish; not sure if this will be addressed along with the rest of the colour correction
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/6552/pic20lo6.jpg

- Just a thought… give Chewie a medal during the closing ceremony? (Although I’m not sure there’s sufficient time during the scene in which Leia could actually give him the medal)
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/627/pic21mv5.jpg

CONFIRMATIONS:
- Did you edit out the scene where the floater droid laughs at and is knocked down by the ASP droid upon entry to Mos Eisley?

- Did you drop the shot of Walrusman’s severed arm in the cantina? I understand some think this scene goes against the idea of lightsabers cauterizing injuries, but I always liked it. If you decided to keep it, you could try cleaning up the bloody floor and make the wound look as though it’s still smoking a bit. You could also try replacing the hand on the arm to match the “flipper-like” hand we see earlier. I’ve done a quick example to show you what I had in mind

The original flipper-like hand seen here:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/3713/pic10oy1.jpg
How the shot could be altered to look:
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/7348/pic10ajq0.jpg

- Ben’s saber is purple in a few shots during the duel. I know you fixed the sabers in the entire second half of the duel, but I wasn’t sure about the earlier half, so I figured I’d mention it
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9981/pic15su9.jpg

I hope some of these suggestions/comments help. Again, I think the work you’ve done so far is nothing short of amazing. I can’t wait to see this edit!

For what it's worth, I think the X0 team should leave the "Episode IV: A New Hope" in the crawl. I've literally been watching Star Wars for as long as I can remember (I was born in '77), and having grown up watching ANH on home video, that's the opening crawl I (and presumably many other people) have grown up with and love.

Adywan, it seems you're receiving a lot of feedback, both congratulatory and critical, regarding the Ben vs. Vader duel. I just wanted to say that I think you should do whatever you believe works best for the edit. While it's important to listen to people's feedback (so that you can gain a different perspective on different elements of your work), ultimately this is your edit and you should do whatever you think works. That being said, although some people don't like the addition of the Battle of the Heros score to the scene, I understand your reasons for adding it, and as with all comments made here, you should weigh both sides of the issue, and ultimately do what you think is best for the film. Personally, I agree with those that have said the music during the Han/Leia/Luke conversation should be omitted or toned down, but during the duel it does give the scene more drama, and it's fitting having the same musical motif from their last duel together replayed here.

One thing I think we should all try to remember is that this is an improved version of the Special Edition; it's not an attempt at simply fixing the OUT. I therefore think that this is the perfect forum in which to play around with the film a little and have some fun with it, as long as the changes being made are done so conscienciously and not just "for the hell of it."

For those concerned about keeping the original film intact, we have a plethora of fan LD transfers out there, as well as the upcoming X0 project. So I say have some fun with this edit. Personally, while I'll always treasure the original version of Star Wars over any special edition, I'm very much looking forward to this release, as it looks to me to be the Special Edition we should have had all along.

Keep up the great work Ady.

Adywan, you're like a one-man ILM team... this is, to put it simply, amazing.

Your attention to detail is remarkable... the Aurabesh writing and altered graphics on the turret gun displays, the Falcon taking off from the Death Star more quicky... and of course changing the formerly static space battle into a fast-paced, dynamic action sequence... it's all extremely impressive.

I tell ya, I'd love to pop this into my DVD player for some friends who know nothing about this project to see their reactions to this "special" special edition.

I too believe the original scene is the lighter version. I'm not sure how "authentic" this is, but I still have a VHS recording of the world television premier of Star Wars (which aired on First Choice movie channel sometime circa 1980-81). If memory serves, it was definitely a daytime shot; as Coov said, I noticed something was different when seeing the scene darkened to make it look more like it was filmed in the evening.

F**king f**kers! That wasn't funny...

I'm extremely glad to hear the project's still going ahead. I'd hate to think I'd been checking these forums and the x0 website daily for the last couple of years for nothing. It's bad enough being that geeky, let alone being geeky for no reason.

I also wanted to say how happy I was to see just how many people, like myself, are still following your progress. I can't wait to see your final results; the images and docs you've shared thus far are fantastic.

Thanks again for all your hard work guys.

What were your original expectations for the PT?
Time
Not sure if we're still on the original topic here... I've skimmed through the thread and the discussion seems to have meandered a bit (as discussions tend to do), but I thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth regarding what I was hoping for before the PT came out.

Like I imagine most SW fans were, I was totally jazzed after I downloaded and watched the trailer for TPM. Without knowing the storyline (I'd only find out about spoilers on the net around the time of AOTC), I was captivated by the visuals: a shiny ship in the desert; Obi-Wan meeting his eventual killer, Anakin; some mysterious red-faced guy with a DOUBLE lightsaber; a plethora of strange-looking aliens... my imagination was racing.

Overall, I expected the PT to fit seemlessly with the OT in terms of tone, special effects, cheesy-yet-authentically-delivered dialogue, strong relationships between the main characters, the overall visual look (i.e., a used universe look), and lots of cowboyish blaster fights like in the OT (with, of course, more lightsaber fighting as there were Jedi still around).

I was expecting the Jedi to be represented on screen as secretive, monk-like figures whom the rest of the galaxy feared, and who lived a simple, boudhist-like existence, with little use or need of technology.

I thought we'd see more primitive versions of some of the technology we'd seen in the OT (e.g., the precursor to the X-wing and Tie Fighter, older-looking droids... or even some of the beat-up droids from the OT looking new).

I expected the story to focus heavily on Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship, with their friendship being established by the end of the first film or the beginning of the second.

I thought we'd see ALL Jedi disappear and turn into force ghosts when they died (in keeping with what seemed to be the case in the OT).

I thought we'd see the Clone Wars in full swing and ongoing throughout the PT , with a focus on specific battles in the different films (like the Galactic Civil War was ongoing in the OT, with a focus on the Battle of Yavin, Hoth, and Endor).

I thought we'd see Vader emerge by the end of Ep II, with Ep III focussing on him actually hunting down the Jedi (i.e., across the galaxy) as Obi-Wan mentioned in ANH.

I thought/hoped we'd see Leia and Luke being born, and I expected Leia alone would go off to live with her mom at the end of Ep III (hence why she remembers her a little while Luke doesn't).

I thought we'd see a more solemn, quiet, and sad Padme... someone who had been resigned for some time to the fact that she was losing her husband... the kind of woman who'd fit Leia's description of a woman who was "kind, but sad."

I thought we'd see a whole bunch of weathered-looking ships and major space battles.

I thought the planets we'd see would be like those in the OT: isolated, sparsely inhabited, and full of dangerous creatures.

--------------------

Looking back, I guess the PT delivered on some of these things, but overall the very FEEL of the films was different from the OT. I admire the overall story arc that's carried over all six films (i.e., the fall and ressurrection of the Republic; the fall and redemption of Anakin; the mirroring of themes and characters between the PT and OT), and despite some of my gripes with it ROTS was an excellent tragedy. However, in the end they are two very different trilogies, and I must say that were it not for the OT, I doubt the PT would stand on its own merits.

The PT simply lacks the same... I wouldn't say "serious".... maybe "mature".... tone as the OT. As a kid, I remember my father being able to watch and enjoy the OT alongside me; it truly was a multi-generational epic. The PT, however, is scattered; we have TPM which is targeting a 10-year old audience, while ROTS is aimed very much at adults. Part of what made me love SW as a kid was the idea that I was watching grown ups do grown up things, dealing with grown up problems with serious consequences. I can't help but feel the PT lacks that quality; it doesn't feel like we're watching adults interact in realistic ways. Rather, it feels like watching adults as they might act on a children's TV show, and by doing that the films lose a lot of credibility.

Hey adywan,

I've been watching your progress in this thread for quite some time now, and I just wanted to commend you on both your technical achievements and your professionalism. The special effects you've incorporated into ANH are nothing short of amazing, and despite the countless criticisms this community has thrown your way regarding this edit (constructive or otherwise), you've taken it all impersonally while remaining receptive to some of the better suggestions that have been made.

Anyway, I just wanted to put in my 2 cents, and to let you know I think you're doing an amazing job. I must admit, I thought this would be a ridiculous endeavor at first, but after seeing what you've accomplished I must say I'm very excited to see the end result.

Keep up the great work.

Sorry for starting a new thread on this, but I didn’t see the old XO thread on the boards (aside from the Christmas one).

I was just wondering if anyone had any news on how the XO project is doing? I haven’t seen any posts from Laserman, Zion, or MeBeJedi for awhile now.

I’ve really enjoyed watching the progress being made on this restoration project, and am dying to get a shred of news.

WOW Someone just released ANH Fan Edit in the THEATERS!!! (aka ERAGON)
Time
Hey jaberdoo,

I don't mean to delve into an entire literature lesson here, but the similarities you're describing have occurred time and again throughout literary history. As Wesyeed pointed out, Star Wars is just as guily of 'ripping off' these elements, so to speak.

The characters in Star Wars, for example, are just a rehashing of classic archetypes, such as:
- the Reluctant Hero (Luke)
- the Mentor (Obi-Wan)
- the Anti-hero (Han Solo)
- the Damsel in Distress (Leia)
- the Sidekick (Chewbacca)
- the Comic Relief (C-3PO, R2-D2)
- the Villain (Darth Vader)
- the Evil Genius (Tarkin)

Moreover, the entire story structure of A New Hope is once again just a retelling of the classic Hero’s Journey. For example, it contains such elements as:
- The call to adventure (Leia’s holographic message)
- Refusal of the call (Luke saying “It’s such a long way from here” regarding the Empire)
- Supernatural aid (Luke receives the lightsaber, the “magical weapon”)
- Crossing the first threshold (Luke leaving Tatooine)
- The belly of the whale (Being caught in the trash compactor)
- The road of trials (Luke practising his lightsaber skills on the Falcon)
- The ultimate boon (Luke destroying the Death Star)
- Refusal of the return (Luke not wanting to leave the Death Star without Obi-Wan)
- The magic flight (the Falcon fleeing from the Death Star)
- Rescue from without (Han saving Luke at the last minute in the Death Star's trench)
- The crossing of the return threshold (Luke returning to Yavin's moon)
- Master of two worlds (Luke is now a hero in the 'real' world and has begun mastering the Force)

You'll also see the exact same structure in movies such as Willow and the Matrix, which themselves were preceded by such Greek tales as those regarding Perseus and Odysseus.

And, as Sluggo suggested, perhaps this thread should be moved here or here.
