By the time we get to ROTJ (to me anyway), it seems like the Alliance has pulled together for one mass-attack. That's why you see more diversity there - everyone has gotten together to work as one mass space navy, rather than small guerilla warrior pockets (of likely less diverse groups).

Excellent point. I think that "reality" as it were often gets overlooked in Star Wars; I think your assessment of the situation in ANH is bang on.

As a side note, it's funny -- you'd think seeing more aliens, as in the PT, would have made the galaxy seem like a bigger place, but in my opinion it's just the opposite. In the OT, by seeing just one group (humans) dealing with their issues, and occasionally seeing aliens, it makes your imagination kick in and start wondering about all the other creatures and planets out there with stories of their own. In the PT, by contrast, every race is everywhere and dealing with the same issues, which seems to diminish the vastness of that universe. Plus, as dumb_kid pointed out, having predominantly human characters makes the story much more relatable.

That is some piss poor fanboy acting right there. The "Biggs" introduction in particular is high in the cheese content.

On another note, the official deleted scene between Biggs and Luke, just before they part ways, reminded me of how much I would love to see that scene reincorporated into the film. The line where Luke tells Biggs, "You're the best friend I'll ever have" is especially poignant given the events later in the film.

Also, the music that this edit has playing during that scene is awesome. I know it's an alternate version of the "Binary Sunset" cue from the Star Wars 2-disc soundtrack, but does anyone know if this was ever used elsewhere? I swear the first time I heard it, it sounded very familiar, but being an unused portion of the score, I don't know where I could've possibly come across it before.

To add to what Scruffy said, I've posted a snippet from the Star Wars Original Radio Drama below (which, if I'm not mistaken, is considered canon). The quotation is from a promotional ad which Luke is listening to at the beginning of the episode, and is regarding "the Academy" which we hear him speak about later in the radio series (and in the movies):

* * *

"...so don't just dream about flying for the Academy, make it come true. You can find a career in space: exploration, starfleet, or merchant service. Choose from navigation, engineering, space medicine, contact liaison, and more. If you have the right stuff to take on the universe, and standardized examination scores that meet requirements, dispatch your application to:

Screening Office
C/O the Commandant
Imperial Space Academy, [your sector]

and join the ranks of the proud."

* * *

So it would appear the Academy is definitely affiliated with the Empire, however joining and graduating from it wouldn't necessarily mean you had to join the Empire and became a TIE pilot. The career choices, as you can see above, were numerous.

I tried that myself, nohandluke. The only solution I came up with was recording the sound effects during playback using Perfect Sound Recorder, then cleaning up the resulting mp3 files.

I also managed to record snippets of landspeeder effects from the Original Radio Drama. By cutting out dialogue, and with some tinkering, I managed to get a decent, steady landspeeder "hum" effect, which I sent Adywan. Not sure how good the quality was for what he needed it for, but it's about the best I could do -- landspeeder effects don't seem to be plentiful or readily available.

Well, I see I'm not alone in wondering what happened to the X0 project.

For what it's worth, I think the X0 team should understand that the reason some people are getting testy and impatient is because a lot of people are/were really looking forward to this edit, myself included. If people didn't care about what you guys were doing, they wouldn't bother posting and asking what's going on. What's frustrating, though, is that updates come VERY sporadically, if at all, and it's hard not to start wondering what's going on when there's no updates for months at a time.

Like ChainsawAsh, I'm not suggesting the X0 team has any obligation regarding keeping people updated on their progress, but when team members drop comments such as "expect an update on the website shortly" (not an actual quotation, but something to that effect), it would be nice to actually follow through with it.

In a nutshell, I don't think anyone's asking the team to give an estimated date of completion, to tell us what percentage of work is done/remains, or shit like that, but some news... anything... would be welcome. What is happening with the project right now? How is Laserman? These are just some of the things I personally would like to be brought up to speed on.

Lastly, I hope you guys don't abandon this project. It looks to be the best preservation of the OUT ever done, and I think it would be a shame to let it go.

As a side note, here's a cap of the shot of what is possibly Peter Mayhew's head that was being discussed a little further back in the thread. I dunno... maybe it is Peter's head, maybe it isn't. Personally, I think it's inconclusive enough to let it go, although I suppose simply altering the hue to make the hair appear more "brownish" wouldn't be a big deal either.

Adywan, how big a hard drive would you be looking to purchase, and how much would it cost?

I've been skeptical about donating money to fan projects in the past, but based on the results I've seen thus far I'd be willing to shell out a bit of cash if it would help pay for a new drive, and hence get the project back up and running more quickly.

EDIT: Another thought... would it be possible to transfer completed portions of your work to others for storage? I myself just recently purchased a new 320 GB drive during a small catastrophe with Windows a week ago. If it were possible/convenient, I'd be happy to store files as a back up. Not sure how realistic this would be (i.e., transfer times, etc.), but... just an idealistic thought. Again, maybe this is not feasible for some reason which I have not accounted for.

That's what I feel regarding TPM -- a bunch of different environments and adventures, but with an overall very loose story holding it together. I think ROTS, on the other hand, is the best executed film of the PT: excellent tragedy (in a literary sense), best acting of the PT, and it actually felt like a movie both adults and kids alike could enjoy.

9. Vader's eyes recoloured to remove the red tint.

See, imo, that's exactly one of lucas's major problems. Going back & changing what was presented to the audience first to match what was presented later.... It's should be that things presented later either match with what cam before, or there's a resonable explanation for the change. As an example, Vader could easily go through multiple suits, that get upgraded over time, which explains the differences in his costume throughout the OOT. In ROTS, i really expected to see a proto-vader that was totally new. maybe something more resembling some of McQuarries original preproduction art. Something that would very clearly evolve into the vader suit we see in ANH, but something not quite there yet. more primitive. Instead we got what was essentially the most refined (in terms of sheer production quality) costume of any of the films, which makes no sense in chronological order of the stories.... Oddly enough, while it may have been the most refined, symmetrical suit; it totally lacked the soul of the oot suits...

Totally agree with you. Another example of how something could've been made to appear "earlier" than the OT were the ships: I would've loved to see dinkier versions of X-wings and TIE fighters; something to show that the ships progressively became more advanced as time went on. Instead, we seem to get Flash Gordon (which, if memory serves, flies completely in the face of what was so innovative in the first Star Wars -- namely, the idea of USED-looking ships).

First thoughts:

TPM - [upon exiting the theatre] Man, I wanna go out and buy a lightsaber!... [5 min later] What the hell was up with Jar-Jar? Is Lucas on crack?

AOTC - Much better that TPM; liked the detective/film noir feel to it; liked the absence of Jar-Jar; I can't believe they made Yoda fight without it looking totally ridiculous... what the hell was up with that cheesy dialogue between Anakin and Padme?

ROTS - THIS was the prequel I was waiting for! Excellent tragedy, epic, overall believable acting... LOVE the scene where there's no dialogue and Anakin and Padme just stare across the city at each other (excellent score here)... can't wait to go home and watch ANH

Overall - We could've skipped the TPM as a film unto itself, and started the PT with AOTC. ROTS would've made an excellent 2nd film, and there should've been a new 3rd film to more closely tie in with the OT (a 19 year gap is a little much)

* * *

Marvolo, concerning your post to Anchorhead, while I agree that Adywan's work is amazing (he actually put me back on to possibly liking a SE of Star Wars after I'd pretty much sworn off it), your persuasive argument is a bit flawed: it presupposes that someone would WANT to "improve" the technical aspects of the film. While I personally agree with you (hell, anything that makes Star Wars crisper, cleaner, and clearer is a good thing in my books), I can totally see why others would like to preserve the '70s feel of the film (which is what I'm assuming Anchorhead feels). It was made in that time period and it should be remembered as being a film in that time period.

I must admit, despite wanting the best version (visually) of Star Wars to watch at home, a part of me sympathizes with Anchorhead... I kind of long for the days when it was just some cool '70s space movie with its own little, as-yet-to-be-over-analyzed characters, universe, and story. The last time I got that feeling was when I came across an old Star Wars LP in a record store; looking at the jacket, with its old production stills, thinking about when this would've still been new, totally took me back 30 years.

Although I understand people's desire to preserve the original non-anamorphic image, I believe having the OT in anamorphic is probably one of the most important things the X0 team could do for this project. I know their version will be leaps and bounds above the GOUT in many areas, but honestly if it weren't for the fact that the GOUT was non-anamorphic, I would have settled on buying and living with that version of the OT months ago.

So, all we are saaaaaayinnnnnng... is give anamorphic a chance. (After all, a 16x9 TV is a terrible thing to waste).

I realize they aren't full res, but you must admit the X0 team has shared a decent amount of material (albeit not recently) both in this thread and on their website: we've been given pics, clips, and docs regarding the work they're doing. Although I agree that a completed, full res clip of something... anything... would be a welcomed treat, I'm quite impressed with what they've shared thus far.

As for wanting to know how far along the project is, I sympathize with those of you who, like myself, are dying to know more about the X0 project's progress. As I've said before, I've literally been visiting both these forums as well as the X0 website daily for the past 2 years (sad, but true). I, as much as anyone, am dying for updates -- screen caps, docs, anything -- but I think it's worth remembering that these guys don't owe us anything. So I say sit back and be patient... after all, what's the alternative?

Adywan,

I don't know if they're quite what you're looking for, but I was able to record a couple of landspeeder effects from the Behind the Magic CD. One is a flyby effect, the other is more of a start-up effect.

I had to record the clips through my speakers (didn't know how to rip them from the CD), but I cleaned them up as best I could. Hope they're good enough quality and that they help you out. They're also in mp3 format -- hope you can work with that (it was that or wav).

speeder effect 1
speeder effect 2

EDIT: I just stitched this clip together from a few separate seconds from one of the episodes of the Star Wars radio drama. If you're looking for a "consistent" speeder sound to use in the background, this may work. I also included another short speeder sound from the same episode.

speeder effect 3
speeder effect 4

If you'd prefer, I could upload the entire segment that I used from the radio drama so that you can edit it yourself... let me know.

Star Wars Radio Drama - *update in 1st post* - completed review

I hope I'm not going too far off topic in this thread... but to answer your question C3PX, yes, I'm enjoying LOTR very much. I'm just beginning book 4 (the middle of The Two Towers), and I had read all the Appendices first (which I thought was amazing). The only written work I can think of that's comparable in depth and detail is Dune (which I really love but haven't read in a long while).

And yes, it's my first time reading LOTR. My only regret (as you mentioned earlier) is that I didn't read the novels before seeing the films. As I'm reading, I sometimes find it hard to reconcile the images I'm getting from the book with those that I still have in my head form the films. For example, I have to constantly remind myself that Theoden is an old man with long, white hair, and not the youthful, red-haired Bernard Hill from the films. That being said, I think the films are amazing in terms of how much attention was paid to the details and overall atmosphere; I truly feel they do the novel justice.

As for Hithchiker's Guide, I do remember hearing that it was originally a radio drama, and that it was quite good. I love the novel, so it might be worthwhile for me to check out the radio drama in the future.

I agree with CO and those of you who think sequels ruin movies... most often they do. Hollywood really does have the bad habit of milking a good idea for as long as it can, then when the well's dry it moves on and leaves a dried up, dead concept in its wake.

However, it's worth remembering that the Star Wars movies were meant to be regarded as individual installments in a much larger story. The whole point of the opening crawl in ANH was to recreate the experience of going to a Saturday morning matinee and being brought up to speed on what happened last week in your favourite serial. As such, it's fair to say some of the movies are better than others (just as someone can say a certain chapter in a novel is better or worse than another chapter), but in the end all the movies make up the grander narrative that is Star Wars.

I must say, though, that there's something to be said for leaving some "story" out of the story to create that little bit of mystery (not unlike Tolkien hinting at the historic events of Middle Earth in LOTR, but not elaborating upon the point). In that sense, it was kind of fun not knowing exactly what preceded ANH; it was fun imagining the events for yourself.
