Holy sh*t! I take a few minutes to write a post and there are a dozen in the interim...
Just forgot to say sorry to hear about the tooth Ady... I'm in Canada, and am not sure what the medical situation is over there in the UK, but I hope you have as speedy a recovery as possible.
And Kurgan... I hope my post didn't sound aggressive. I just wanted to offer a retort to some of the comments in your post. I definitely value freedom of speech and opinion, and hope you and everyone else keep saying what's on your minds.
Incidentally, when's the last time Adywan's been in here? I think he wisened up and split this popsicle stand awhile ago.
Kurgan, I think the point should be made that people who liked the xvid version of Star Wars: Revisisted, and who thought it was fine as is, weren't "defending" Adywan but rather were doing the very same thing you are doing now: freely voicing their opinions. I happen to be one of those people who pretty much liked it as is; that doesn't mean I was trying to be a "good guy" and distance myself from those whose reaction to the edit differed from mine. It just means I was stating my opinion. If that makes you feel as though you're being targeted, then the issue is yours and no one else's.
As for comments to the effect that it's impossible to please everybody with this edit, I think that's a fair, factual statement. Based on what I've seen, it would be impossible for Adywan to make every change asked for -- speed up the TIEs, I like the TIE reveal, remodel the TIEs, the TIEs look great as they are, put a severed human arm in there, put a flipper in there, return the conversation in Ben's hut to the original version, keep the conversation in Ben's hut as is, etc, etc. There will always be something someone would like to change that will be at odds with another fan's wishes. Given this situation, I believe it's very accurate to say that not everyone can be pleased with this edit.
Finally, yes, Adywan has been and continues to be very open to criticism and feedback, but he himself said the amount of nitpicking going on here was a real downer. While I agree everyone is within their rights to keep posting their thoughts and feelings (that is what a discussion board is all about, right?), I just think there's not much point in doing so anymore if it's to pick apart the edit. Nothing more is going to come of it, and I think it's more important to focus on what we have received than what little we did not.
Originally posted by: Denryanj Also, I'm saddened to see this once friendly and positive thread( and the wonderful work by Adywan that inspired it) poisoned by rudeness, nitpickery and rancor.
"Oh no! The Rancor!" -- C3PO
Apparently even Threepio was bothered by all this. I think the simplest way to avoid any further bad vibes would just be to stop critiquing this thing. The edit's done, so the point is moot. Let's just enjoy this amazing version of the film and move on.
And, as per a previous request, here's a calm, soothing picture of a kitten to help us all relax.
Ady, I think you (and everyone, for that matter) should take a moment to step back from the fandom and poring over minutia that's been going on in here to remember what you've accomplished: you've just made the best version of Star Wars that's ever existed. Period. Regardless of whether you're a die-hard Original Trilogy fan or a fan of the Special Editions, the fact remains that there has never been a version of this film with fewer errors and with such excellent video quality as the one you have put together. Please remember that.
That said, if your edit can still draw criticism (however constructive the intent may be), then take solace in the fact that it's now obvious that NO version of this film will ever satisfy absolutely everybody. So relax, smile, and enjoy what you've accomplished. Despite any niggling comments that have been made, please remember that every single person in this forum by and large loves what you've done, and I think I speak for everyone when I say that, if and when you're ready, we'd love to see what you can do with the rest of the saga.
The fact that so many of us have said that your version will now be THE version of Star Wars watched in our homes is an enormous compliment, especially considering the importance this film holds for all of us. Please don't lose sight of the enormously positive impact you've had on us all, and hopefully we can all try to keep our comments in perspective as we discuss this project in the future.
Well, I just sat down to watch it again last night, this time with my uncle. He's just seven years my senior (I'm 30), and while he's perhaps not as fanatical about Star Wars as we are, he's still quite a big fan, and I thought I'd post an "outsider's" reaction to the film.
*Side note: just before we started watching it on his new projector (100" baby!), his kids (6, 4, and 2) were in the next room watching the original ANH (Dr. M's edit) while going to bed. I sat with them for a bit and they were asking me a hundred questions, like why Luke was living with his aunt and uncle, what the Jawas were going to do with R2 and 3PO, what was going to happen to Princess Leia... it was quite cool seeing them so wrapped up in the story, and it reminded me of how awestruck and immersed I used to be when watching those films as a kid*
At any rate... my uncle and I watched the movie, and his overall impression was as follows:
First off, he was amazed that this was a fan edit. When I told him a single person (with a little outside help) did this by himself over the course of 18 months, he couldn't believe it. As for the movie as a whole, he thought it was the perfect version of the Special Edition. Although he still prefers the original '77 version over anything else, he said that this is what the SE's should have been originally, and thought the movie was a fantastic alternate version.
As for specific reactions to some of the things we've been talking about here:
- he loved the TIE figher shot, and thought it was very effective. He felt it made the Empire look very threatening, and that it gave the scene a real sense of urgency and impending doom.
- he found it a bit hard to discern what the severed arm was supposed to be. He had no idea that it was Walrusman's, let alone that he had a flipper. When I told him you were thinking of putting a human arm in there Ady, he thought that sounded like a good idea.
- other things he enjoyed were the intensified action scenes toward the end (Ben vs. Vader, the Falcon vs. the TIEs, the DS battle), and he thought it was cool that Chewie got a medal
So, all this to say once again that you've done an awesome job Ady. As someone mentioned earlier, you should try to take the nitpicking as sort of a backhanded compliment; people are critiquing this the same way they would a Hollywood-made film. You've done such a good job that it's easy to forget that this was done by a single person (well, WMX should get a nod here too for his incredible work). I also want to apologize for my part in prolonging the flipper debate; as you have proven all along, whatever you ultimately decide to go with will undoubtedly be an excellent decision.
Again, THANK YOU ADY! It's becoming cliched to say it, but you really have given us something far beyond what I think anyone could have expected. As I said before, as soon as the DVD versions are released, your edit will be inhabiting the current SE DVD case, and the official DVD will be quietly tucked away to collect dust.
So sit back and, for the moment, focus only on enjoying the fruits of your labours... I know I am

To Mojo_LA Regarding the suggestion of adding a wobble to the TIE shot to simulate camera movement, I don't think it would work. I assume you're referring to that kind of jerky movement seen in Battlestar Galactica (or even AOTC). If so, while it definitely works in some cases (it's terrific in BSG which, if you're involved in that, kudos), I don't think it's the kind of thing that would fit in properly with ANH. It would be the only shot like it in the film, and personally I found the few shots like it in AOTC to be distracting. As for the blurring issue, I didn't notice anything one way or the other, so I can't comment on that.
Ady, I'm happy to see you're still following your own gut with this edit. Now more than ever I'm convinced of the old adage that you can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time. It's good to hear you're going to keep doing what you think is best, and not be swayed by the multitudinous opinions of others (mine included).
As a side note, I'll hopefully be watching your edit with a friend tonight. I can't wait to see his reaction (he was floored a few weeks ago by the sample clips alone).
Originally posted by: Mojo_LA The only other moment that hurt the edit for me was that new shot of the TIEs coming in to the end battle... This shot just doesn't work. I could swear I remember seeing an early version of this where you used the shot in the movie and cloned the TIEs to look like more coming in - do I remember this correctly? I would go with that one... But I beg you... that one TIE fighter shot hurts your cut. That is the ONLY moment in the edit that says "amateur." Trust me.
I have to disagree 100% with this. I think just the opposite is true: the cloned TIE shot is the one that looked amateurish, while the current shot looks fantastic. It was the one scene more than any other that made me say to myself, "How the hell did THAT get done?" To the average person (i.e., me), the TIEs look totally comparable to those inserted by ILM in the Special Edition.
Kurgan, I believe the moment you're referring to occurs just as Vader swings his blade through Obi-Wan.
And Ady... *pause*... I really, really hate to add to this already ridiculous discussion on the flipper/hand, but for what it's worth, if you decide to go with a redone flipper, I think it should look less textured than what appears in the sample you posted. Something perhaps between your model and NormanS' might look good... something smoother.
Originally posted by: dumb_kid I absolutely loved the DS sequence except for the TIE reveal because it completely messes up with the pacing.
I didn't find the pacing ruined at all... I felt the slightly long reveal, accompanied by the Imperial March, simply gives the viewer a momentary feeling of suspense and dread. I thought it worked beautifully.
God... if, as Ady said, he's turning into George Lucas, then I feel like I'm turning into an Adywan apologist
"The Severed Arm Hearings" - Day 42 - Statement taken from corellian77 in the matter of the people vs. the arm
* * *
I really do feel like we're making a mountain out of a molehill here... but then again, isn't that what Star Wars fans do best?
I'm really surprised so many people don't like this shot. I usually agree with (or at least understand) most of the critical feedback I see posted here, but it would seem I'm totally on a different page with regards to this topic.
First off, for those who want to see a hand in there instead of the flipper, I must say I totally disagree. It's clearly Ponda Baba's arm, it's always been considered as such, and I really see no reason for any tinkering to alter this fact. The only reason I think the shot needed to be altered in the first place was for continuity's sake (there are at least 4 shots prior to seeing the severed arm on the ground where it can clearly be seen that he has a flipper-suction-cup-thingy for a hand). Even starwars.com explains that it's Ponda Baba's arm, as well as the reason for the continuity error:
A continuity error involving Ponda Baba is readily apparent in careful viewing of the film. In the cantina sequences filmed in England, Baba has large fin-like hands. In the insert shot of Baba's severed hand, those fins were not available so a hairy clawed hand was used instead.
So, at the very least, I think the flipper should stay, as it is clearly Ponda's arm and the flipper fixes the continuity error. From here, I believe the only issue becomes whether or not the shot looks okay as is. Again, I think it looks fine, but if Ady feels it needs tweaking as others have said, then I suggest going with NormanS' model, as I must say it looks very good.
Wow... just, wow. Like others have said already, this will replace the '04 DVD of ANH for me. I can't wait to show it to my friends over the coming days.
I'd go on in detail about everything I loved, but thanks to seventiesfilmnut, I think he covered all I had to say Other than that, the colour and sound were exceptional; there were a few lines of dialogue that I hadn't even heard before, which your edit seemed to pull out of the background (e.g., 3PO saying "OH NO" as R2 is shutting down the garbage compactor).
Let me just say again that I find the "flipper shot" in the cantina to be great as is. I still don't see any lighting problems with it, but as a few others have mentioned it, I guess my opinion's in the minority. Perhaps a "reshoot" of the flipper would yield lighting results others would be happy with, and if so great, but whatever you do please keep the flipper instead of the hairy paw. As I've mentioned, it's a fix I was delighted to finally see.
And now, in keeping with what seems to be my new tradition, I shall end with a couple questions:
1. Ady, I found the editing of the scene between Luke and Ben in Ben's hut to be exceptionally well done. I'm just curious - what was your motivation for re-editing this scene? Was this how it originally was shot?
2. If a tweaking of the end credits is going to be done, I wanted to poll others on here and ask: do people want to keep their forum names in the credits, or would they prefer to have their real names listed? I was thinking about this myself, and wanted to know what other people thought.
EDIT Just wanted to add something. I really hate to give any sort of criticism of this edit, but the only thing that didn't look quite right to me was the Falcon coming out of hyperspace around Yavin. It somehow looked a little "off;" perhaps the transition between zooming in and it flying was jerky, perhaps the "zoom in" needed to be faster... I can't put my finger on it, but I just wanted to throw that out there in case it was something you wanted to have a look at.
Well, I just finished downloading the torrent overnight and burned it this morning. I'll keep seeding the torrent until it hits a 5:1 ratio or until there's no more peers, whatever comes first.
Before I go pop this into my DVD player and enjoy the movie in its entirety, I just wanted to chime in on a few things.
First and formost, Ponda Baba's arm... I just want to say I think the shot looks absolutely fantastic Ady! The lighting, the angle, and the texture all look incredible, and the shot looks just as I hoped it would; the whole thing looks totally natural to my eye. This is one of the fixes I was looking forward to most in this edit, and you pulled it off beautifully. I must disagree with those who think it looks out of place; if I were seeing this for the first time, I'd think that shot had always been there.
Furthermore, unlike Fuser said, the hand couldn’t be the human’s because the sleeve is that of Ponda Baba's jacket. Also, both Ponda Baba abd Dr. Evazan can be seen falling over before the camera cuts to the next shot, so I don't see any problem with regards to whose arm did or didn't get severed either.
Just to show how close you got this shot to my expectations, Ady, here's an image I posted awhile back about what I thought the shot might look like. The top image is the original, the next is my attempt, and the bottom is Ady's finished version.
As you can see, Ady got the shot even better than I could have hoped. So, in short... KEEP THE SHOT!
That being said, I'd really like to thank everyone in this forum for helping make this vid available so quickly. I was worried that I wouldn't get to see it for weeks or *gasp* months, not being familiar with usenet and all, so I was amazed to see everyone pitch in and help make this available to so many people in so many ways so quickly. Again, thank you; this community truly rocks.
One quick question before ending this post: Ady, will the DVD versions be anamorphic? The thought just occured to me as I realized the XviD is not.
Thanks again, Ady, for this... you've made many people very happy.
And by the way...
Originally posted by: adywan I knew that the changes i made wouldn't please everyone but this was originally just for me and it's exactly the way i wanted it . Oh my god i have turned into George Lucas.

P.S. Thank you, too, for the mention in the credits... very cool.
I'm downloading this via torrent, but took a peek at Usenet.com after reading some of the posts earlier.
I'm tempted to join due to the extreme difference in download speed, but do all newsgroups require you to pay for the service? Any free ones out there? (Yes, I know I'm cheap...)
I hate to add to the multitude of posts, but... THANKS ADYWAN! Your hard work and dedication to this project are, and will continue to be, greatly appreciated by many, many fans. Thank you.
Also, let me add my voice to the choir of people asking for this to be available via torrent as soon as possible (since I know nothing about using a.b.starwars).
I'd also like to get this via torrent. It would make it easier for me to both obtain and distribute, plus it would allow me to get the DVD9 version for when I eventually can burn dual layer discs (and in the meantime I could just compress it myself for use on single layer discs).
Does anyone know what's involved in creating a torrent? I'd even be happy to do that provided I'm given instructions.
I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do with Ponda Baba's (or Walrusman as I grew up calling him) hand in the severed arm shot. The temp footage alone that you shared with us was amazing.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product Ady!
Ewan's inconsistent haircut doesn't bother me as much as the flipped shot of him speaking with Qui-Gon just before the latter goes back for Anakin. Unlike other flipped shots in the saga, this one just pops out at me because of Ewan's braid being on the wrong side.
Anti-Matter... PIF, I believe, corresponds to your first guess: (Pay It Forward)
What's the likelihood of this finding its way into a torrent? That's been my main means of obtaining edits thus far.
Also, I am competely in the dark about how to use usenet to obtain edits... any threads or sites on the net someone could direct me to so I can learn more about this?
