The holograms in the PT are going to be downgraded and visually match the OT, maybe even lower tech because after all the Pt shouldn't be so much more hi-tech than the OT when its set in the past. And the " its a much more prosperous time" excuse is just lame. Our world has been in much more prosperous times but our technology is more advanced now than it ever was. cockpits, displays and even some ships will have a complete OT overhaul in the PT

I'm SOOOO happy to hear that ady... looking forward to what you do with the PT.

BTW, how're the donations coming along?  Still in need of some monetary funds?

Do we really need a siren? He already gave the evacuation order. People are fleeing. We get it already.

Put Ric Olie in the shot then for cryin' out loud.

"Look, it's an evacuation and the people are leaving!"

LOL... I vote ady put Ric Olie into every scene of ESB:R from this point onward.

its actually only a problem with the 2004 DVds because the original '97 SE doesn't suffer with the " one colour" syndrome as bad

Nice to see the movie's actually getting worse as time goes on... that is, of course, till you came along ady :)  I have to say, though, the colour in the '97 version seems the best of all the shots (minus the poor contrast).

Ady - any reason you went with the orangish colour over that of the '97 version?

Quick question for you ady... Leia's apartment: judging by the first pic, you've decided against changing the look of the exterior building in order to jive with the interior layout?  Or have you altered the interior?  Or... is this another one of those things that has never really bothered you?

BTW... where'd you get the buidings used in the Cloud City background in the landing platform shots?  They look terrific.

i tried a few variations, making the window smaller, adding and apartment next to leias, amongst others others but nothing really worked out. the focus was always taken off leia so i just went for removing the upper part of the apartment roof to fix at least one continuity problem. i guess its one continuity error i'll just have to live with. there's another that i just can't fix either and that's a flipped shot of chewie and R2 as they run away from the stormtroopers on bespin. oh well. :)

Too bad the shot proved to be so difficult... although I must confess, I don't think reducing Leia's visibility is necessarily a bad thing.  I kinda like the idea of seeing an establishing shot of the building, with Leia only being noticed on a 2nd or 3rd viewing (I'm thinking something along the lines of the opening shot in Blade Runner, where the camera dollys in on the Tyrell building and only at the end do we realize we're seeing the window to the room in which Holden is standing).

http://www.truveo.com/Blade-Runner-Opening-Scene/id/1932031672 (shot in question starts around the 2:20 mark).

At any rate, thanks for the explanation ady :)

I love the new Luke arrival shot ady... I didn't fully appreciate it until I saw the side-by-side comparison with the original (thanks for that vaderios).  Both the new cloud elements and the (new?) Cloud City look much better.

However, 2 suggestions/comments:

- I agree with Jeyl in that the forground cloud element could stand to be darkened a little to blend better with the background clouds

- Also, as vaderios suggested, the forground clouds could also be "blued" up a bit.

Here's what I had in mind (yours on top, mine below):

Of course, if you say you already tried this and the results were less than stellar, then I know you made the right decision and that the finished shot will look as good as it possibly can.

Okay, this is the last attempt, for real this time! I promise.... If Ady isn't interested in this idea, maybe other fan editors may like it? Here it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NZd9dn9Bn8

Now the dashboard is darkened, the monitor has more of a glowing effect, the images move more, and there is aurebesh text on display. Disregard the final 20 seconds or so, as that was a mistake.

I. Am. Done.

Thanks for watching.

Probably your best one simply because of the editing (the changes between the monitor and Han and Leia, save perhaps from the last cut, are precisely where I thought they should be.)  The way it is now feels natural and doesn't hurt the flow of the scene whatsoever IMO.

The real problem remains finding a hi-res picture of the Falcon's cockpit instrumentation... as good as your clip looks on its own, compared to ady's edit the quality would likely stick out like a sore thumb (unless, of course, your clip is better looking than what we're seeing on youtube, which is almost a given).

Edit: sorry for continuing this topic... I replied to it from a few pages ago before reading the remaining posts.  BTW, LOVE the final FINAL version of your clip oh_riginal :)

ady - LOVE your last post :)

vaderios - interesting composite of Cloud City, but I find the clouds much too stormy/dark (I get the metaphor, just think it doesn't fit in with the visual look of Bespin from what we've seen in other shots).  I think a simple sunset/twilight shot would be more suitable:

How about seeing the gas mine in one of the other cloud city shots? Even smaller would be cool.

Give it up man!

I can see the news highlight now: "Fanfilm Creator Murders Fellow Forum Poster in Fit of Rage... details at 11." :)

Ady, how's the wampa coming (if at all)?  How much of the creature are you intending to make?  And are you hoping to replace ALL previous wampa shots with your model?

The one thing i really want to do when i get to the PT is downgrade a lot of the technology and design. yeh, i can imagine that the queen of naboo would have a very expensive craft with the latest tech but other ships & environment do need the downgrade (which they actually did a bit for the jedi starfighter in ROTS)

I'm glad to hear you say that adywan... I hate the whole touchscreen phenomenon that's infiltrated sci-fi/futuristic movies nowadays.  Look at any recent sci-fi flick and it seems no one is putting any original thought into the displays -- they just slap a holographic touchscreen in there and call it a day.  It's really too bad too, because some of the most convincing on-screen computer systems have been clunky, old-fashioned-looking things (i.e., Mother in Alien, Bladerunner's V.K. machine, etc.).

This problem is only exacerbated in Star Wars, because now you've got "older" ships in the PT that look more technologically advanced than those in the OT, despite the fact that it should be just the opposite.  I don't know who's more to blame for this continuity error: the art department for designing these consoles/ships in the first place, or Lucas for giving them his seal of approval.

Don't even get me started on the difference between the PT and OT in terms of how realistic it appears getting a ship ready for flight (X-wings needing to be "fired up" and fuelled vs. just jumping in a cockpit and being ready for a joyride).

.... ahhh... rant over.  At any rate, glad to hear you're sticking with the "change the PT to match the OT" mentality ady.

Davnes007, like everyone else, I think you did a great job on that clip.  How you managed to whip that up in one night I don't know.  With some of the refinements mentioned (i.e., smaller text, different colouring, juggling the placement of the images and text, etc.) it could work.

However, for the purposes of ESB:R, I'm not sure it'd be a good addition.  Although pop-up HUD displays look OK in the PT ships, I ultimately think it would be out of place in the Falcon, whose instrumentation is very rudimentary and consists of physical parts (buttons, switches, etc.), just like all the other ships in the OT.

That said, again, it is a very interesting and well-executed concept.  Who knows, maybe with some adjustments it would fit.
