video is all done for both sets, well actually all 3 sets.

I'm loving your posts more and more dj :)  I'm also starting to become quite anxious to hear how these movies will sound... might be a good time to go buy myself a decent sound system so I can fully appreciate the audio side of this project.

That's great news dark_jedi!  I've been really looking forward to seeing these ever since you posted your ANH sample clip awhile back.

Out of curiosity, did you use gforce's script "as is", or did you modify it?  I ask because when I tried to apply the script myself to ANH, the results looked good, but not quite as good as what you posted -- your picture is a bit sharper, and your overall colour balance seems better than the results I obtained (mine seems to lean toward yellow).

Yeah, I feel the same way as I don't understand any of the scripting they do, but we'll see the results in other preservation attempts.

I'm not sure if you guys are already aware of this, but Oldschooljedi created a step-by-step process for applying  g-force's script to the GOUT.  It's available in the "How-To's and Technical Discussions" thread here:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Guide-to-convert-the-GOUT-DVD-from-4-3-to-16-9-using-freeware-tools/topic/9854/

Like you, I have veeeerrrry little idea what any of this means or what it does, but I've partially encoded ANH with the help of this tutorial and the results are indeed quite good.  But beware: if you are using an older computer (as I currently am), the encoding process takes forever (it takes me about a week to encode, or at least it would, if my computer didn't consistently crash on day 6).

The alternative to doing this yourself is to wait for dark_jedi to finish his work on the entire OT.  His current results can be seen here:

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>
Time

I haven't checked in on this thread in a while, but thought I'd share this cool little tidbit:

I just attended FanExpo in Toronto, Canada this weekend and during the Q&A session with Peter Mayhew someone asked him about his thoughts on Chewie not getting a meddle at the end of ANH.  He responded by talking about getting a meddle during an MTV award ceremony a few years back.  Then a guy directly behind me stood up and told everyone in the room to "check out this version of Star Wars by a guy named Adywan.  Chewie gets a meddle at the end, and the entire movie is just awesome."

It's cool knowing that word continues to spread about ANH:R.

I expected a princess. I got a military commander. Didn't ring 100% right with me.

I find it interesting that you have a problem believing that a secret member of the Rebel Alliance would be capable of delivering a military briefing, yet think nothing of a farm boy with no military training being capable of piloting a starfighter into a battle.

It would be a lot more straightforward (and less kiddy) if they'd included all the sounds on a CD, however I'm sure there's some technically minded folk out there who could jerry-rig a means to extract the sounds from the module (or just use the headphone jack to record directly).

I'm thinking the simplest, but most time-consuming, method of getting these sounds would be to do exactly as you suggested: run a line from the headphone jack to the mic input on a computer, then simply record the sounds in something like Audacity.  Mind you, who's to know how good the quality would be.

should there be some added shadows to some of the snowspeeder scenes at the end (from 5:25 to 6:30)?  It seems the only time you see the snowspeeder cast a shadow is the scene directly before the one where it flies over Han (from 6:25 to 6:27).

Was thinking the same thing.  Looks like the light source would be such that the snowspeeders' shadows would be visible in most if not all the shots.  If possible, I think it'd be a good addition and would help make the speeders feel more real and part of their environment. (Note: a shadow is also visible as the speeder flies into the hangar).

Also, I didn't catch a deactivation sound from Luke's lightsaber when he escapes the wampa's cave.  Were you planning on adding that sound effect Ady?

What's the strangest thing that ever happened to you?
Time

Two events come to mind:

One strange incident occured when I was in high school.  I had dreamed that my family and I were in a car chase.  In the dream, we ended up getting into a head-on collision and my dad died.  I woke up in a panic; it took a few seconds for me to realize it was just a dream, and that both my parents were safe.  Later, at breakfast, I asked my mom how she slept and she tells me she had a terrible night -- seems she had a dream that she was at my dad's funeral.  I then told her about my dream.  My dad, who was sitting there eating his Cheerios the entire time, began to look a bit nervous.  My mom and I then told him that under no circumstances were we letting him leave the house that day.  To this day, that was the first and only time either my mom or I have dreamed about my dad's death.

The other incident occured when I was very young (I'm guessing somewhere between 6-8 years old).  I woke up in the middle of the night and decided to go to the kitchen to get a drink.  As I'm walking down the hall, I pass the doorway leading to our dining room and, out of the corner of my eye, I see this shadowy figure, about my height, walking parallel to me... it was almost like I was passing in front of a mirror, but with only a shadowy reflection being mirrored back.  I stopped and did a double take, but the shadow was gone and I was left looking into the dark, empty room.  I proceded to get my drink and went back to bed, surprisingly (in retrospect) not too disturbed by the incident; more than anything, I was curious about what I had seen.

Years later, talking with my wife, I recalled this incident.  At first I chalked it up to childhood imagination, but out of curiosity I googled "shadow people".  Turns out I'm not the only one to have experienced this phenomena.

Yes, I think it is time ... for Mini Ric to blow up Tantooine (and possible the entire cast of NNRRPP with his Mini Death Star!

This is great season/series finale type stuff.

This is a stroke of genius... can you imagine Han Solo's reaction when he sees that 95% of the people on the board have been killed off? :)

P.S. I guess I can make a few more posts now that I've been approved.

WHY we like the things we like (and why we don't that which we don't)
Time

First off, I don't think anyone needs to be able to explain why they like or dislike something.  However, if someone wants to be able to have an intelligent conversation with someone else about the merits or faults of a particular piece of art -- be it a movie, a novel, a poem, a painting -- the ability to deconstruct the thing in question is essential.  Simply saying "I like/disklike this thing because I do" doesn't exactly allow room for discussion.

I also disagree that analyzing something changes one's emotional reaction to it.  Rather, I think that being analytical helps one understand why they feel as they do.  If a person's appreciation for something changes as a result of analyzing it, then I'd say that person A) forms judgements very quickly with little thought or B) is easily persuaded.

Being an English teacher, I've spent the better part of my academic life learning how to analyze literature, and now I spend my working life teaching others to do the same.  Like many students, I went through my phase of thinking 'why do we have to analyze everything?  Can't I just read a book and enjoy it without having to think about it?'  However, in retrospect, I'm glad I learned to be analytical as it has actually made me more appreciative of things like novels and films.  Now, when I see a movie, I don't just say to myself, "Well, that was cool."  Instead, I can say, "Wow, I like that movie because of its character arcs, its themes, its symbolism" and so on.

I say all this in light of having this very kind of discussion with a friend over the weekend.  We were discussing the movie Unbreakable which I love but he hates.  If I had simply said, "I like it because I like it," and he responded, "Oh yeah?  Well I hate it because I hate it," we wouldn't have had very much to talk about.  Instead, we each considered the other's arguments and insights.  At the end of the day, his hearing why I love the movie and my hearing why he hates the movie didn't change the other's opinion, but it allowed us to understand the each other's (and our own) reaction better.

Huh... interesting.  I always liked that Leia was in the captain's seat, but I guess Chewie was the one actually sitting there on set.

To echo what Zak said, have you or will you be seeing a doctor about the migraines/vision loss?  Sounds too serious to brush off.

Take care of yourself man.  I hope you feel better soon.

Well, Acky sent Ric a PM making fun of me for thinking he is 005, so it's clearly someone from ot.com.  But who?

The plot thickens.

Gee, I didn't think my joining the NRRPB would result in a page's worth of speculation.  I was considering holding out a bit longer... but, alas, the truth is revealed.  I'm Ackbar.

Thanks to those who thought my entry was humourous... I was inspired to do it by reading what you guys had been posting -- funny stuff :)  I find the Her'Mek/Ric/Panaka saga to be particularly entertaining.

doubleofive said:

It's like it is me, but its not. I wouldn't have made the CRAP joke right off the bat though. Always tease the definitive phrase, never say it.

Normally I'd agree, but there seemed to be so much to milk out of Ackbar's lines in ROTJ that I didn't want to delay :)

Oh, and by the way...

doubleofive said:

Great, so either someone isn't fessing up, or we have a random person who joined the Proboard who is funnier than all of us.

TV's Frink said:

Not possible.  No one is funnier than us.

Made me laugh out loud at work :)

So how long does it take Solo to approve a character anyway?  I'm itching to visit Tatooine :)

I think it would be a shame to throw away the effort that went into the matte reconstruction.

I definitely prefer Ady's work to the original shot, and would much rather see that new clip in ESB:R than nothing at all.

I don't like giving negative-sounding feedback for something I actually like, but I just wanted to throw it out there for Ady's consideration.  As I've said before, if Ady wasn't open to getting feedback, he wouldn't bother posting such things in the first place.

Don't know if it's just me, but after seeing DE's version again, I think I prefer his camera movement just a wee bit to Ady's.  I'm not sure why, but DE's feels more "natural" -- perhaps it's because DE keeps the vane centred in the shot more than Ady?  I don't know.

Ady, is the motion of the camera a done deal, or are you still playing around with it?  Either way, it's a definite improvement over the static zoom-in on the matte.  A thumbs up to both of you for this subtle but great improvement.

When did you realize the Prequels sucked?
Time

Kurgan said:

Mainly I agree with the claim that the characters in the OT were more likable, and their onscreen chemistry was better. The story was more upbeat (generally) and hence lent itself to that adventure theme that reminded you of having fun at the cinema. I'm not saying a dark, political feel was wrong for the Prequels, but that "deadly serious" atmosphere mixed with random cartoonish "humor" just didn't work well. The characters were too stiff and there were too many of them to keep us caring about any of them. Too often Lucas dialed down the suspense to give us self-indulgent moments of ships landing and goofy aliens doing slapstick. It's like he just wanted to play in the world and remind us what an artistic genius he is, rather than tell the story and get us to identify with the characters and their struggle.

Love this post... you make a lot of good points Kurgan.

Kurgan said:

I think the Star Wars name works against the Prequels. Had they just been a set of sci fi films set in a different universe, I don't think they would have been so harshly criticized, but the catch 22 is that I don't think they would have made as much money, since so many people went to see them out of obligation as fans or in expectation of seeing something approaching the "magic" of the original trilogy.

Funny, as I read this I kept thinking how exactly the same is true about the new Star Trek film.

Kurgan said:

FYI: I avoided spoilers like the plague for all three prequels. I actually wonder though, if people who "spoiled" themselves silly for the movie beforehand were more disappointed or less than those who avoided them?

I was spoiler-free for Episodes I and II, but spoiled myself rotten for III.  Ultimately, I disliked most of TPM, liked AOTC better, and really liked ROTS, so not sure what that says regarding the correlation between spoilers and enjoyment of the films.
