GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

Thanks for the help guys.  Like I said earlier, I just followed Oldschooljedi's tutorial, adding filters here and there when HCenc obviously was looking for something that wasn't in my plugins folder yet.  I've only got a few hours left before the encode is done, so I'll just wait to see what it churns out.

Aside from OSJ's tutorial, is there another, perhaps more current, set of instructions for applying gforce's script to the GOUT?  I'm pretty green when it comes to programs like avisynth, virtualdub, and so on, and a nice step-by-step tutorial would be grand for me and others of my kind (i.e., encoding noobs).

rockin, did you install avisynth for 64-bit Windows?  I had trouble loading the AVS script too before upgrading.  From what I understand, you need to install the regular avisynth first, then install the upgrade.

That being said, you can see from my posts above that I'm not exactly having the best luck myself, so take my posts for what they're worth :)  I tried these just for the heck of it, but it looks like I might be better off waiting on dark_jedi's versions.

Out of curiousity what is the average processing time for this script on a quadcore computer?

I'm currently looking at 32 hours.  I'm using an AMD Athlon II quadcore, 2.9 GHz, with 4GB RAM.  I also have an ATI Radeon 5770 graphics card which, under Windows 7, takes advantage of DirectCompute 11 (i.e., the graphics card takes on some of the processing tasks), which is supposed to be beneficial for such things as encoding.

Prior to this system, however, I was looking at a 6-7 day encode.

Edit: Oops, looks like I was only looking at the time for the first pass.  I guess that means I'm really looking at 64 hours :(

What needs to happen for this edit is to have all the B-list actors on the cover. Epic style.

Well aren't you just full of great ideas :)

I agree with 005 about Ric Olie and Panaka being front and centre, but we should definitely try to squeeze these guys in too:

I agree with Bingowings that the falling gag currently feels a little too repetitive.  I think, though, that if edited differently it might work better.  What about this order:

  • Have Obi-Wan's first fall (and immediate recovery) come from being kicked by Maul (0:55 - 1:02)

  • Then, have Obi-Wan's second fall come from being force pushed (@ 1:05), followed again by an immediate recovery (reuse footage from 0:57 - 1:02),

  • Then, use the continually falling sequence (0:08 - 1:50), followed by him overshooting the catwalk, and the subsequent jump back up (flip shot).

In that order, not only does it build comedic effect (IMO), but it also avoids the continuity error of seeing Obi-Wan running to rejoin the fight (the catwalk clearly leads to the force field doors, but then we see him back fighting beside the energy pillar things).

I'd also leave out the failed jump segment (@ 1:15), as it's not clear what's happening, and it leads to the longer running time.

/my 2 cents

If applying the ROTJ script to an NTSC copy, what lines would I need to alter?  From what I can see, the following would have to be omitted:

########## change framereate (PAL to NTSC)
AssumeFPS(24000,1001)

While the following would have to be modified:

########## cut off some of the black bars for faster processing (but keep mod 16)
Crop(0,112,0,-112,align=true).AddBorders(8,0,8,0)

########## resize to 16x9 AR, remove sides, add borders
Spline16Resize(744,396).Crop(18,16,-12,-16,align=true).AddBorders(3,58,3,58)

Is that everything, or would other lines need alterations too?  Also, would it be sufficient to replace the portions above with the corresponding portions from either the ANH or ESB script?

Hey Fronk, that's cool that Bob is having a go at the overshoot. I also thought the idea of Obi-Wan talking as he's falling was good, too. :)

Oh, I should post this old favorite of mine here too, which would happen not long after the recent videos:

That was hilarious... I'd never seen it before.  Thanks for the link Ripplin.

Well  it's about time you made some sort of useful contribution on these boards Frink :)  This edit promises to be pretty funny.  I love the original "continually falling" Obi-Wan clip, but so-so on the second one (where he falls, jumps back up, falls, etc.).

One way you could follow up on the first clip would be to modify Obi-Wan's jump so that instead of landing on the walkway, he actually overshoots it.  Then we could see him repeatedly fall down the other side (i.e., just flip the previous falling shot).

I hope that made sense.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>

Interesting ideas regarding altering the DS display screens, but I'm in the "keep it as is" camp.  There's nothing inherently wrong with the existing displays (they totally look like they could be scanning, giving read outs, etc.).  In fact, I find "older looking" displays look more realistic than a lot of newer ones -- I believe the technology could actually be real in the OT, whereas I find the displays and tech in the PT often hard to swallow.

As for the youtube clip, the display in the control room looks like a Windows Media Player visualization during MP3 playback, and that energy beam in the chasm is way too much flash.

As for the different logos / different colours... neat idea, but I'd hate to see that iconic Star Wars logo, along with accompanying gold text, replaced with anything else.  It's that logo and colour scheme that, in part, lets you know every time that you're not just watching some movie, you're watching a STAR WARS MOVIE!!

I'm not a big fan of dropping the episode #s.  If the Revisited edits were designed to be a stand-alone trilogy I'd maybe think otherwise, but I've always felt that, being special editions, part of what they do is bridge the gap with the PT.  As such, I don't see the point in dropping the episode numbers, since we're not necessarily trying to avoid having them work with the PT.  Besides, I've always liked the roman numeral designations in the Star Wars movies... it makes them feel like chapters in some ancient tome.
