Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

The image is way too busy

Looking at the covers again, I think it was a neat idea (having a series of smaller images make up a larger one), but yeah, way too busy. The image fails to draw my eye to any one place.

On second thought, maybe that's exactly what Lucas wanted. In a sense, the covers are exactly a reflection of what we see in the PT (lots going on, no real focus).

The point was that the commonly held opinion was that it was not a bad movie, much less an awful one.

Well, apparently 34% (wait... is that right?... yeah) of the population would disagree with you. But you're right, the "common" opinion appears to be that The Phantom Menace is neither a bad or awful movie.

It should be taken into consideration, however, who this majority is made up of. I may watch a Harry Potter movie, for example, and think it was OK, while a hardcore fan of the franchise -- someone who's read the novels and knows the minutiae of the Potter universe -- may dislike them immensely for failing to live up to that person's expectations. I think much the same could be said of the PT: while the average moviegoer may find them entertaining and visually exciting, a person who has been a fan of Star Wars since the OT era may have a different view of the films based on his/her experience with the original three movies.

It implies that there should be room for improvement.

But you might want to underline where in the general conscensus it says it "is a piece of a shit film".

Well, ok, maybe piece of shit is a bit too strong but if the film is said to lack in the plot and character development, which are generally regarded as the most important parts of a good story, it basically means that it isn't very good, doesn't it?

For the guy who wrote that, yes.

The guy who wrote it also has 34% of the population backing him up.

As for the 42% who gave TPM a "B" rating, obviously they feel that, despite liking the film on the whole, there are elements that detract from it, otherwise they would have given it an "A".

All this to say that, with a overall average rating of "C", TPM is not a "good film" in the opinion of the general public. That's not to say it's wrong to like it -- some of my favourite movies are apparently real turds according to the masses, and it doesn't mean I enjoy them any less -- but let's not delude ourselves into thinking that Ep. 1 represents anything approaching cinematic excellence.

I can't decide if this is a brilliant idea or a horrible one, but it's certainly a ridiculous one...

Might you consider speeding up the video and using the Benny Hill theme insead?

Found a sample of that idea here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FLl0m71ecc

The song and video actually match up surprisingly well even without the clip being edited.

I have to say, seeing Anakin dealing with all these problems with no other racers around (hitting pylons, launching into the air, having his ship fall apart) is hilarious. It makes him look like the most inept pilot of the saga :)

Is there an instance of McGregor saying "has" in the other prequels you could use? If not, I can try taking a stab at crafting a decent "has" audio clip.

Edit: some possible sources:

AOTC: "We will do exactly as the council has instructed"

ROTS: "Padme, Anakin has turned to the dark side."

ROTS: "He has become a very great threat."

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Hmm... based on the preceding comments, it would seem Ady's decision not to solicit any other suggestions was a smart move after all :) I guess, at the end of the day, ANH:R will satisfy 99% of everyone's expectations, with only a minor thing here or there each individual wishes were different. I'd say that's a pretty amazing achievement.

I'm kind of hoping that Red R2 goes away...

Really? I profess that, upon first viewing, I noticed the red R2 unit but wasn't sure if it was a change or if it had always been there. I assumed the former, but the fact I wasn't sure, to me, indicated it must've been a good tweak.

I wonder if it'd be possible to track the original R2's movement and superimpose a different droid head on him (a là R5 or perhaps the cone-headed droid being marched down the hallway on the Tantive IV).

Very cool to hear what Ady might alter in ANH:R:R. The proposed changes vary in their importance for me, but I think all will improve an already superb edit.

I know Ady's not entertaining suggestions, but I just wanted to put this out there for discussion...

I was always surprised Ady never ended up changing R2 in the background of the Millennium Falcon reveal shot. Specifically, R2 can be seen descending the stairs of Docking Bay 94 with our heroes, but is only about halfway down when the camera pans right to reveal the Falcon. Then R2 waddles into frame only seconds later, something that wouldn't be possible given how slowly he was moving.

Given that Ady altered a similar shot just moments before this one (i.e., where he recoloured R2 red to seem like a different droid and placed a new R2 element in the foreground to maintain continuity as the camera pans right before entering Docking Bay 94), I always found it curious that he didn't modify the subsequent shot which exhibits a similar continuity error.

Just curious if anyone else A) ever noticed this and/or B) cared :)

BTW: thanks to 005 and Ady for saving me the trouble of grabbing these screen caps myself.

Just echoing stretch009's question: if using ImgBurn, I'm presented a window offering a choice of where to put the layer break.

Does it matter what I choose? Any ideal spot?

Can't you preview the choices? Just pick the one you like best.

Yeah, I checked each of the options out, I just wasn't sure if there was one in particular other members would have suggested, or if I should have just clicked the "ignore layer break" button.

Ultimately, I went with the first option which ImgBurn gave me, which placed the break between the Falcon jumping to hyperspace when escaping Tatooine and the establishing shot of the Death Star before it destroys Alderaan. Doesn't seem to really matter in the end, though, as the movie played right through the break without a pause.

DJ, I just flipped through the DVD and I must say it looks great. I can't tell you how nice it is having the version of Star Wars which I grew up with at this level of video and audio quality. A big thanks to you and everyone who contributed to this project... you really made my day.

My DVD-9 of ANH:R plays on both my PS3s as well (I believe one is 3rd generation, the other the current slim model). I don't know what could be wrong at your end AuggieBenDoggie. Are you in North America or elsewhere? I'm just wondering if PS3s in different countries have different restrictions.
