Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Edit: Just to avoid confusion and unnecessary questions, there will be an SD DVD of this but it will be the only SD content I will make.

Just to clarify: There will be a DVD9 version of the v2.5 film, with a DVD5 of the extras. Yes?

My in-laws would love this, but they don't have a Bluray player. =\

I'm thinking of buying one for them for my father-in-law's birthday, but that's not until late May.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

For what it's worth, I'm a huge Star Trek fan (my interest in watching it second only to Star Wars now, thanks to Harmy and Adywan, as I refuse to watch the SE's).

I've seen every episode of every (live action) series of Star Trek, many of them more than once. Granted, I'm a child of the TNG-era, and I don't like TOS much because of its campiness and over-acting. However, despite my not liking TOS, I do love most of the Kirk movies (2, 3, 4 and 6), having seen Star Trek IV in the theater when I was eight years old.

I liked Star Trek 2009 a lot.

The reason why JJ Abrams not initially being a Trek fan is a good thing, is because he's not intrinsically bound to the many constraints that the Trek universe had set for itself. I've seen the behind-the-scenes stuff for his Trek movie and he did seek a lot of input from various people, each of whom had different levels of interest in/knowledge about Trek (some of whom are serious die-hard fans).

Actually, the one thing I remember most about what JJ said Trek needed was that Star Trek is like classical music and Star Wars is like rock music; so he felt that Star Trek needed some "rock" injected into it in order for the franchise to capture new audiences. And you know... I agree with him about that. Star Trek, while awesome, had become so bound by its established canon, that it would have been difficult to continue the franchise with the intention of gaining new fans without rebooting it and/or finding a new and different approach for it to take.

It's perfectly fine for people to prefer the "Prime Universe," but they still have 24 seasons and 10 movies to fall back on. The problem wasn't with pleasing hardcore fans, it's with gaining new ones--which is the opposite of Star Wars' problem as I see it.

Blu-Ray and other HD box size STAR WARS covers
Time

I've been putting together some covers for Harmy's Despecialized restorations by cannibalizing parts of other covers and changing a few things here and there.

So far, I've finished "Star Wars."

(CLICK FOR FULL SIZE)

Here is the .psd for it: http://www.mediafire.com/download/zkdzkrbzg1lawpr/ANH_project.psd
There are hidden "Episode IV" and "A New Hope" layers in the .psd, in case you wanted to have it. I had it there initially, but people in Harmy's thread didn't like it.

I'm still working on ESB at the moment, as I'm planning to experiment a bit with how an actual "Empire Strikes Back" logo will look on it. Other than that, it's pretty much also done, I guess.

Your input is welcome.

You also know what Harmy's name is. You just don't know his first name.
That's not his last name. It's based on it...

Google+ seems to think it is.

I can't help put feel like I opened a can of worms. Sorry, Harmy.

Incidentally, if I were extremely nitpicky about it looking professional, I'd have a thing about wanting to put Harmy's real name there. However, 1) again, that doesn't help people find it online and 2) Harmy may appreciate his anonymity, given the whole underground nature of this sort of thing.

Then again, I do know what Adywan's name is.

But it's probably really rude to ask, so I'll just leave it "Harmy".

On the bottom of the back of my BD covers, I'm putting "'Despecialized' Restoration by HARMY" under the credits.

Should it say "preservation", "restoration", or "remaster" or anything different instead? I 'm not sure I want to put "edition". This is the theatrical edition in HD. Somehow saying "edition" makes it sound more like an edit, which it is not.

"Theatrical Restoration (Despecialized) by Harmy, Remastered" seems to be most accurate.

Just make sure not to say preservation.

It occurs to me that it's not simply a remaster, as a remaster implies that there was a singular previous master which was reworked. This was stitched, spliced and recolored from various sources. It's a restoration to the original version... but then it's also remastered to HD, as neither the original nor any other version to come afterward ever looked this good.

Then again, it's obviously remastered, and it's a remaster of itself kinda (ie. v2.1/2.5), so maybe the credit "and Remaster" isn't necessary.

I could just put "Restored and Remastered by HARMY" without the "Despecialized", but then how does that help other people to know where this awesomeness came from if they go looking for it?

Being a fan of the films' scores, I also made alternate versions containing a few music edits to bring them closer to the way John Williams originally composed them. These mixes are identical in every way to those listed above, except that the cue for Boba Fett's departure from Bespin in ESB is replaced from the '97 SE, and the deleted music for Ben's scene on Dagobah has been inserted into RotJ. I myself am rather fond of the way these edits sound, but if they're not to your liking, no worries--that's what the other versions are for. ;)

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

As I said on Harmy's SW:DE thread, I look at Revisited as the SE as it should be, and Harmy's restorations as the OOT should be (though I have seen dark_jedi's GOUT remaster V3, and it is indeed very good). Therefore, I am going to use 2-disc cases for each film, with both the Revisited and DeSpecialized versions--just as the 2006 DVD cases contain both the SE and the GOUT.

On a side note, I have watched ANH:R a over half a dozen times now from start to finish, and am really excited about ESB:R; while I simply refuse to watch the SEs and most especially the Blurays.

Okay, Harmy. You asked me to put up screenshots comparing the AVCHD from the M4V Handbrake made for me at RF21. I was going to do that, but then I noticed that yes, looking at both of them side-by-side I can tell the difference.

=\ All I know is that I want to put all my movies on my PS3, and it doesn't support files larger than 4GB.

Lair!

:D

It's not a big difference, but you can see it when they're side by side.

I didn't notice artifacts, but I did notice a difference in grain/fine detail. The amount of grain/detail on the left of R2's dome is different, as well as the left of Vader's helmet.

That's very nice but that doesn't really help with the issue - the files there are already unrared and even if they weren't, I'll get banned from my internet connection within seconds if I as much as start a torrent program.

Spencersage is trying to get ESB. He couldn't get part of the RAR to download, so I suggested the torrent. It may not help you in getting a hold of that piece of the RAR, but it might help him to get the film by another method.

He might have to re-download most of it, but it's still an option.

If you buy used copies, Lucasfilm won't see it as a sale of their crap offering. Also, damaged discs may be available at a discount for those who have no intention of ever watching them. I've found that gluing all of the Blu-rays together and throwing away the cases allows them to take up less room.

Haha. :)

I hadn't thought of buying damaged discs on the cheap...

I'm sorry, I just find the additions to the Bluray release bordering on offensive.

I'll post them tomorrow morning (ie. in about 7 hours) when I get back to the computer the files are on.

Out of curiosity, what size and resolution of screen are you using to go through and check the film for errors as you work on it? I'm only asking because a larger screen would likely make it easier for the human eye to spot problems, and viewing HD source files in actual size would seem to me to require lots of panning around for each and every frame, as the whole thing likely wouldn't fit on the screen--especially when said frame is surrounded by video editing tools.
