Because Star Wars is fantasy in space, not science fiction. The Force is mystical, magical, and the basis for a profound faith. Giving scientific reasoning for Force-sensitivity kills the wonder and imagination of the Force. Not to mention they’re only (badly renamed) mitochondria, taking Second Place in the Stupid Name category behind the term “younglings”.

In short, it’s bad storytelling for this genre. GL is a good ideas man but a bad writer.

ALSO: Octorox, you should make your own thread for your proposed edit rather than filling Hal’s up with it.

If it is between Death Star and Coruscant, I say Coruscant. The Death Star makes for a cool scene to set up A New Hope and it looks really cool, sure, but it just raises far too many questions. Why did it take almost 20 years to build the first one when they already had the plans but they were able to completely redesign, improve, and build a new one in only like 4-5 years?

It’s unclear when does the scene take place. Sure, the next scene is Ben “delivering” baby Luke, but still the death star scene could take place a few years after Palpatine founded the Empire. As for “how long does it take to build the death star”, ROGUE ONE might give an answer ?

Case in point: It raises far too many questions. You can suggest possible answers to those questions, but it doesn’t alleviate the problem that those questions are asked when they shouldn’t have to be.

Can someone tell me where to find the Russian Vader scream? I’m interested in adding my two cents to the question about it.

If I may: is it “thousand of years” or “of generations” ? Lucas got himself mixed up in the process, so I wonder what’s the offical canon for this time era. By the way you could kinda link the prelogy with the postlogy by using “awaken” instead of “conspire” (or even “Dark forces” instead of “sinister forces” if you’re a gamer 😃).

For over a thousand generations...

I believe that you might be the only one who wants to keep Vader screaming “No !!!” and the Frankenstein’s Monster walk as well. Are you sur you don’t like the L8 version of the scene ? 😃

Hal 9000 said:

I’ve given my reasons numerous times. It’s not that I want to, as much as feel I need to.

I might agree about L8wrtr’s wipe mid-scene, except that I feel he didn’t implement it very well. Considering that your primary goal is to make the edit feel as professionally edited as possible (which I have said many times to multiple people, that the best fan edits don’t appear fan-made), I can understand why you would leave it in if your efforts to remove it make it feel obvious there was a cut there.

Of course, I say that, and mid-sentence I think about the scene in ANH at the Death Star conference room where Vader waves his hand as though David Prowse is continuing even though Vader has no speaking part.

Well, why don’t we raise the topic and hash things out while it’s still fair game?
What does everyone think about Death Star vs Coruscant for the ending scene with Vader, Palpatine, and Tarkin?
Also, are we sure we don’t like the Russian version of the Vader scream? 😛

I like Coruscant better. Makes more sense to me. Palpatine standing there, looking over Coruscant as he has so very recently become Emperor of the galaxy. It’s fitting. And it’s more believable and asks fewer questions than a Death Star does.

I haven’t heard the Russian Vader scream for comparison. Link?

Yes, thank you, that’s true. As much as I don’t care for it, the scene doesn’t really work without the Death Star. It’s still not in Ep2, though, because that one is a totally pointless cameo.

Wait, what? I really liked that change.

Hey, can you please edit your ifdb page(s) to list v3 changes (and v4’s when it’s out)?

IFDB only lists changes up to v2, and the 'spleened v3s combine them together so I don’t know what the differences are.

Thanks for sharing. My edits pass the buck to the viewer to decide which viewing order is best. Q2 and AEmovieguy both had interesting ideas about making them fit a first time chronological viewing.

Which fits my feeling exactly about it being an extended edition of a sort for me.

In any case, all I’m saying is, it’s going on my shelf.

Okay, okay. So I finally finished watching the entirety of this prequel trilogy edit. And I do have to say, it’s really very good indeed.

For me though, I kind of feel like this is the Hal9k Extended Cut to my Q2 Theatrical Edition. It’s like…I needed Fall of the Jedi to cut back on all the fluff and nonsense to create a prequel universe I could appreciate and even come to like. Then, after it was long established that I did like the prequels now, I could then introduce a version with expanded content.

Good job Hal. As you say, these edits do feel decidedly prequely, but that’s not such a bad thing it seems. They’re just different, and different can still be good. Well done.

Info Wanted: Plex Agent for Preservations? (or how to organize metadata)
Time

I’ve started using Plex Media Server recently, and I’m trying to organize my movie library. However, while there is an Internet Fanedit Database Agent for acquiring fanedit metadata, there isn’t one for preservations.

How would you suggest organizing metadata for Star Wars preservations in Plex?

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?
Time

PT: Q2’s Fall of the Jedi
OT: Harmy’s Despecialized

On occasion Adywan’s ANH:R

My purpose when watching Star Wars is to watch the unaltered original trilogy, and to watch an altered prequel trilogy that is more consistent with the OT.

Q2’s Episode III allows Leia to remember her mother, and never mentions the name Vader nor shows the suit. This (among other changes it includes) makes it a must-have for me. The only qualm I have with his Episode I is removing Anakin from the battle against the Droid Control Ship, but I will accept that change if it means having everything else.

I’ve watched half a dozen or so other fan editors’ prequel edits, and only Q2 has the Episode III that genuinely makes me smile and happy to watch it again and again.

Look, you can mock me all you want if you can’t take some constructive criticism. But I’m not seeing any refutation of the logic that if you’re gonna upload something publicly anyway, you might as well do it in a faster and more convenient way.

Faster and more convenient how exactly?

Two problems with public trackers:

  1. Speed. Everyone can connect and everyone can download. Hit’n’runners ruin everyone’s download speed and never give back, which is a huge issue for 25GB torrents. Seedbox users rarely use public trackers, because honestly, why would they? No one wants to waste bandwidth on people who close their torrent client immediately after the download is done. Uloz.to is faster.

  2. They’re public. Everyone can connect to every torrent and log people’s IP’s. Copyright trolls can too.

Stop whining and fill your captchas. Using a download manager it will all take about 4 minutes of your life.

Besides, if someone was insistent on getting it via torrent, it’s already on the spleen, isn’t it? That at least addresses the “public” issue.

Hal,

You categorize these edits as being akin to “FanFix” fanedits. What exactly does that mean? I know FanFix.com was a once functioning site, but what makes a FanFix-style edit different from any other edit?

I think it’s an important thing to expound on because when reading the descriptions of your edits, I had no idea what you meant regarding this.

No you’re not. Sith have rules, a creed, a recorded history, etc. The term “Dark Jedi”, while possibly synonymous with any dark force user, doesn’t necessarily refer to someone who belongs to the Order of the Sith.

It’s not pedantic. It’s geeky. But geeky is cool now.

The Fall of the Jedi Trilogy (Released)
Time

Thunderclap, I really wish you would do an Editor’s Commentary track that could be muxed into the film. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to L8wrtr’s but I strongly disagree with some of the editing choices he made to his Ep III.

I’ve watched Hal’s, Kerr’s, Seciors’, Phantom Editor’s, L8wrtr’s and Stankpac’s prequel edits. And I have to say yours always rises to the top for me. Sure, there are specific scenes I prefer elsewhere–such as how L8wrtr has Anakin competently and purposefully destroy the Droid Control Ship, and how Kerr (and specifically /only/ Kerr) has Palpatine reveal his true form. But everything else, everywhere else, I just can’t find a fully compatible prequel trilogy that can compete with yours.

I can’t go back to watching Padme die, and I can’t go back to a prequel Vader in the suit. I could maybe still tolerate there being a prophecy but it’s all the better for not having to.

I love the prequels now, thanks to you, and it makes me smile to know I’ve helped distribute your edits.
