Star Wars Colortiming & Cinematography (was What changes was done to STAR WARS in '93?)
Time
if I remember correctly, this footage looks very different on the -97 SE video release. As I don't own the SE, can someone confirm this?

Wow. That is the first time I have seen anything that reminds me of seeing the SE in theaters. As the LD captures show it is completely different from the home video transfer. Is there any way that we can ever get the colors fixed like this? Adywan's color corrected AVCHDs come close but a true restoration should be made working from 35 and 70mm prints of the OOT and 35mm masters of the 97SE. Wasn't the SE based off Lucas's Technicolor three-strip print?

George Lucas auteur theory a crock of Bull
Time

He is more of a collaborator now, but not when he started. He had to be coerced into collaborating. I think THX is brilliant and SW as a combination or Saturday morning serials, mythology, great moviemaking, and for the simple jou it provides.

I have problems with the way the auteur theory has been manipulated by film courses, professors, and the general public. It kinda makes me cringe when I hear it used in this context. I like the idea of it but don't think it applies in every case. The director doesn't have his hand in everything, but definitely has a felt presence on the film if he is worth his salt. I love Truffaut btw if you couldn't tell.

Lucas is a great moviemaker pre-1990. (producing the Indy films and finishing the Trilogy.) Then everything turned south, and the same can be said for Spielberg to be honest. (Last Crusade and Empire of the Sun are the cutoff.) Once again I stress the word moviemaker as opposed to filmmaker when I discuss these two. I admire them and their work has profoundly affected my life, but for all intense and purposes they are great at what they do: making movies.

To the naked eye the JSC captures look more accurate and the DC seems way too manipulated. However, some of the things Zombie pointed out could be possible. Who knows exactly? I wonder if anybody at Lucasfilm does or even cares. I always liked the color on the 97SE better than what's on the 93 sourced releases of ANH.

Info Wanted: GOUT - Anyone done an anamorphic version? aka which version to get?
Time

Wow. If there's something better than PWNAGE then I'm all for it. PWNAGE has officially replaced the ANH GOUT for me. BTW thanks for the screenshots Moth3r. I used those to convince people that there is a good original SW version out there and that the GOUT did have issues. Capturing the others would be great for comparison.

Max_Rebo's '97 SE superset' preservation (* unfinished project *)
Time

Same here. Like skyjedi I wish there was a good quality 97SE source to work with. It seems to be the one version that gets virtually ignored by the general public. They think the 97 and 04 are the same. While waiting for MaxRebo's and DarkJedi's versions if anyone has the TB or G'kar editions please PM.

The photo makes things really confusing. I read the book in a library so I can't go back and see where the picture is sourced from. I thought it was an on set photo. The GOUT seems accurate and is what I'm used to since I grew up on SW 1993 and onward. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen pre-1993 master Star Wars save for some clips from the JSC.

Is the 1977 theatrical bootleg worth tracking down?

Yeah it's hard to think of SW pre-1993. When I read that book I just thought that was a still from the set to match the film scene-may be wrong. (It's beautiful anyway!) The Japanese Special Collection from what I have seen looks like a completely different color scheme. Is this closer to the actual film or are they both completely off the mark?

Great movies you hate.

Well, I just got the Ultimate Batman Collection DVD set, and watching all the features on it really gave me new insight and appreciation for all four of those movies... yes, even to Batman & Robin.

I know your pain. I also plunked down for that set years ago because it was cheaper than buying the three separately.I agonized over even owning a copy of the abomination. It is painfully awful. When viewed as a comedy and a satire on comic book universes then it is a little more palatable. I watch it every millennium just as a reminder of what not to do. It still doesn't hold a candle to Batman '66 though.

I do like my Batman dark however. Dark Knight Returns, Knightfall, Mask of the Phantasm, and the original issues of Detective Comics from 1939 to 1940.
