Info: The NEW 007 DVD's
Time

Do the Blus fix any of the problems on the UEs? I always wondered if there was just a problem in down converting the restorations. Most are fine, but some have so many gripes that I've started tracking down the old SE discs etc. and am even looking at going back to LD. (ex.TB, OHMSS, LALD, TSWLM, AVTAK, GE). And is it just me, or do the colors on nearly all the films seem extremely muted? Thunderball, YOLT, LALD, and TSWLM in particular.

Is it worth looking for the early THX mastered snapper DVDs of Dr. No, FRWL, Goldfinger, TSWLM, and Moonraker?

Info: James Bond - Laserdisc Preservations: 1962-1971
Time

Well, the thing is that Thunderball is one of the Bonds that is always mucked up. First there are all of the different audio versions: "Sorry old boy, better luck next time/now you can tell about the one that got away", Pinder's manta ray line, the score or lack of it in the bomb reveal scene, use of the James Bond theme or a reprise of Thunderball over the end credits.

Then you have to look at the various color renditions over the years. The film has an odd look to it when compared to the others, and I think this comes from the fact that it was the first Bond to be in Panavision. The UE has color changes made by the restoration team, and while they aren't too distracting-they just aren't a part of the film. The one good thing about the old SEs were that some of the original colors were there. This MGM LD collector's set is reputed to have the best rendition of the original colors of the film.

Does the Blu-ray fix any of these issues? Otherwise I'm seriously considering tracking this LD set down. I saw the restored film in a theater and it did look better. The soundtrack issues are something else, the UE has the "Now you can" line in mono, but the 5.1 mix has "Sorry old boy" on the exact same disc! Would it have been that hard to include the other track with differences?? I grew up on a VHS copy of the film and know one track by heart. What should really be done (and I know this seems really nitpicky) is an option be made to select which of these differences should be included while watching the film.

Can it be done?

American Beauty isn't all that bad. It is overdone though, and very overrated. The only reason that I have a copy is because of Kevin Spacey (he can do no wrong)

Kane has been way to Lowry-ized. I've been realizing the extent that some of the Bond titles have been changed especially the colors. And not having original audio is a major no-no! (TSWLM!!)

As for the last film seen it is Grave of the Fireflies. Absolutely stunning, and I cried. Yes, I'll admit it.

Celebration V
Time

I'm wondering if I should go in August. It's in Orlando, and I go to school nearby. Has anyone ever been to one before?

Interesting thought: Maybe there should be an official ot.com table...I'm sure that would turn some heads...maybe if a bunch of us were there....and then everyone could ask Lucasfilm reps about blu not blue, the GOUT, 97SE, theatrical audio etc. face to face.

"Harry Palmer" Films (The Thinking Man's James Bond)
Time

I love these films. And because they were produced by the Bond team their production values etc. are fantastic. Ipcress is still probably the best spy film ever made. (and features one of John Barry's best scores.) FIB is a good 60's spy film that isn't campy. Billion Dollar Brain is Palmer on acid. (it has some surprising staying power though.)

Haven't seen the 70's film, but the two from the 90's are interesting curios. They aren't that good however. There are versions floating around online and they were recently released together in region 2. Worth it for serious Palmer fans only.

Michael Caine is the man. No one can touch Harry Palmer or Jack Carter.

Help: looking for... 1997 SE - both the flunk and reivax versions
Time

These versions would be better to start with because they have less of the color issues that plagued the home video release. I wish I had some of these, but unfortunately no one seems to have any of them anymore. The closest thing to this is Ady's ESB that was returned to the 97 edition (many thanks again!), but all of the HD versions lack the true colors and structure that are present on the actual 97SE. This seems to be the hardest version to work with.
