Your vinyl record collections
Time

Like to collect vinyl, but have never really gotten into it. This is all of mine (I think). Do any of you collect new vinyl pressings and reissues?

R.E.M.-Murmur (3rd), Reckoning (original pressing), Dead Letter Office (original pressing), and numerous singles.

The Who-Who's Next (3rd), Quadrophenia (German pressing), It's Hard (original).

The Best of the Animals, 2001 A Space Odyssey Soundtrack, From Russia With Love Soundtrack, Goldfinger Soundtrack, Thunderball Soundtrack, The Living Daylights Soundtrack, Star Wars Soundtrack (original 77 double LP).

"I goddamn near lost my nose. I like it. I like breathing through it. And I still think you're hiding something."-best Jack line ever.

The Great Dictator-only Chaplin could take on Hitler through comedy.

Jaws-no matter how much you analyze it..this really is a great movie. The beginning drags on purposefully to lull you into a false sense of comfort. Then the pace starts to build until the real movie starts on the Orca.

Great movies you hate.
Time

(sharply breathes in) I've heard people disliking Casablanca, but Vertigo always hurts the most when someone dislikes it....and Kubrick is God.

Kane is unfortunately dogged because it was named "the greatest movie ever" thanks again AFI! Lawrence  has to be seen in 70mm. I've only seen it in 35mm and even that blew my mind. 2001 should be seen on the big screen as well. Would be killer to see it in Cinerama! 2010 was more of a mixed bag. Blade Runner changes your life in 35mm. and how can you not like Batman Returns?

disliked (but still enjoyed): Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Rocky, Schindler's List, Robert Altman films, The Birds, Deliverance, and yes....the Goonies.

LOATHE: Titanic, Terminator 2, The Sixth Sense, West Side Story, Romeo and Juliet (60's version), Saving Private Ryan, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed. (What happened to Marty?) The Dark Knight, Apocalypse Now Redux, Juno, and modern comedies of all kinds.

Annoyed by: Forrest Gump, The Sound of Music, To Kill a Mockingbird, E.T.

I thought I would be watching all 5 versions of BR like mad. I still haven't watched the workprint all the way through.

The Fifth Element-way too cartoony for my taste. Enjoyable, but very light on story.

sex, lies, and videotape-I really enjoyed it, can't believe it took me this long to see.

Modern Times-the farewell to the Tramp. Chaplin is timeless.

I Was a Male War Bride-four words: Cary Grant...in drag...

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 2 - Who Has The Better Facial Hair?
Time

Although ridiculous as a way of comparison, it is impossible to imagine either one without facial hair. They both have had beards for so long that it has become part of their image. DRAW.

Jaws and Star Wars were the two films that firmly established the blockbuster, changed marketing and the entire distribution system, and effectively demolished the New Hollywood Renaissance (1965-1977). So really you could go with either one, dependent on your preference. Jaws may be a big budget update of the fantastic Duel, but it's just too damn good to criticize!

Further reflection: Spielberg's beard is pedestrian, and just enough to reflect his thoughtful nostalgic tone. Lucas has the beard that represents moody probing thoughts. His THX and Star Wars beard is a masterpiece of this brooding, shy, and thought-provoking style. The later one works, but seems to be there. Nowadays it is really just laughable. Spielberg at least maintains his beard presence.

Lucas v. Spielberg, Round 1 - Who Is The Better Actor?
Time

Well...you're gonna get it! (just finished a bio of Spielberg..)

Spielberg is unrivaled when it comes to public speaking, and marketing oneself and one's films. Lucas has always been introverted (I mean, he even built a giant compound to cut himself off from the rest of the world...). Lucas also stopped making films, and then finally came back to SW years later. Spielberg has kept himself in the spotlight with unchallenging relatively decent (maybe, but The Terminal was unbelievably awful.) works since.

Of their individual sensibilities, Spielberg is much closer to the general consensus than Lucas. This explains his mass appeal to this day. Films like Jaws, CE3K, and ET have huge audiences simply due to their spirit. The Indy trilogy has the escapism of Lucas, but with the drive of Spielberg. This marriage of Jaws and Star Wars is what made these three films so appealing-they literally are the best of the two combined.

Regardless, I think Lucas and Spielberg both had lobotomies. Lucas made THX-1138. The robot made the prequels. Spielberg has not had a good film since Empire of the Sun and Last Crusade. I know this is probably taking it a little far-I admire these two, but really wish they would start making challenging works again. The entire point of making films is to grow as an artist..isn't it? When your best films are your first ones (DUEL!), what does that say?
