That did make me chuckle, but I feel it intentionally ignores the obvious answer…
Hey I just noticed someone snuck a Rancor photo in here!
I don’t remember if I’ve bought from teepublic specifically but I’ve ordered t shirts from a few of those type of online shops. In general they don’t hold up quite as well as a factory produced t shirt but they still last long enough that I was satisfied with the purchase. Like, they’ll hold up well enough to get a couple years out of them easily.
Any info on the origin of that photo? That doesn’t look like Prowse in the suit. In fact, I’m not sure that’s even an ESB production suit at all. Almost looks more like a cos-player. It’s worth noting he’s missing his robe and codpiece in addition to the cape.
For reference, here’s Prowse on set:
Shooting the live action plates for the stormtroopers outside the DS hangar bay pehraps?
Yep! And that’s none other than Joe Johnston in the Stormtrooper suit. Hasbro even made his action figure years ago:
I’m a historical purist. Give me all films (not just Star Wars) as they were seen by audiences in their original theatrical runs, warts and all. If there are multiple versions (like the 70mm vs 35mm ESB), include both so I watch each version. If there are later re-edited special editions or director’s cuts or whathaveyou, include those too. Film history is important and various iterations of a film should be properly preserved and made available to anyone who wishes to see them.
As for the original Star Wars Trilogy, I prefer the 4KXX versions both because they are the highest quality restorations (official or not) and, more importantly, they are the most “pure”. Meaning they are sourced as much as humanly possible from original, pre-special edition, film prints. They aren’t reconstructions that try to mimic the original (as amazing as Harmy’s work has been), they ARE the original. But, of course, 4K80 isn’t complete yet…
So yeah, I definitely prefer the original cuts to any version of the SE. But if I’m going to watch an SE, I don’t mind the ‘97 or the brand new ‘19 versions. The 2005 dvd and 2011(?) blu ray versions are pure and utter garbage that I’ll never watch.
Hmm. I hate to be a Debbie Downer but I didn’t love the gameplay trailer as much as I’d hoped. The graphics seemed a bit cartoony in a lot of ways. Especially with all the “vortex*” lines streaking off the ships and the way the lasers-hitting-shields were animated (I always thought X-wing Alliance did this beautifully; with shields up the lasers would kinda make that part of the ship glow and then fade out much like when Luke is “hit, but not bad” in ANH. And then with no shields the lasers would make tiny explosions on the ship).
But what bothered me more than the look of it was the way the ships seem to maneuver. There were multiple instances showing the ships performing these super tight, skidding turns much like a car drifting around tight corners. It’s alright if it’s a rare, one off occurrence. But I’m not a fan of it being a regular part of the gameplay as the trailer implied. I always liked how Star Wars ships maneuvered much like airplanes. It gave a sense of familiarity and “realness” that felt authentic. Very few real airplanes can perform a maneuver like that, and the ones that can use up ALL of their kinetic energy to do it. It’s a one trick pony that would get you killed in most dogfights because once you do it, you have no momentum left and have to slowly get your speed back by trading altitude (potential energy) for speed (kinetic energy). And during that transfer you are moving very slowly with very little ability to maneuver. A sitting duck. So it just kinda feels like a cheat to have that ability.
Anyway, enough poo-pooing things. It still looks like a lot of fun and I’m so happy to see a new Star Wars flight sim after SO MANY years! Despite my qualms above I’ll still absolutely be getting this and I’m sure I’ll enjoy the heck out of it. I’m really looking forward to the single player story.
*those white streaks are meant to resemble wingtip vortices. I get that they’re just meant to be a visual cue for speed in video games, but they are a real phenomenon and games (and movies) almost ALWAYS get them completely wrong. For one, you have to have two things to make them: air and an airfoil (wing). No air in space = no vortices. Second, they form at the tip of an airfoil as the higher air pressure underneath slips around the wingtip to the lower pressure above. This effectively creates a tiny little horizontal tornado coming off the tip of the wing. Almost all wings create them while flying, but they are only visible when the moisture content of the air is just right so that the change in pressure at the wingtip condenses the moisture into a little cloud that spins around in the vortex. So, basically, they don’t exist in space and they would be very unlikely even in an atmosphere since the ships don’t have real wings (i.e. an actual airfoil that uses physics to create aerodynamic lift)
Well, I’d have to go look up which episode it was, but yeah, it was just flying along the streets like 20 or 30 feet up. Kinda like the flying cars on Coruscant. But it was clearly one of the speeder designs from ANH. I dunno, they just feel like hover car designs and not flying car designs.
I dunno, I never really liked the flying cars in Star Wars. In the OT flying still felt like a special skill that not everyone had, but the flying cars on coruscant kinda democratized flying in a way that diminishes that specialness.
Oooooooooohhhh… well never mind. That’s cool.
I still probably won’t preorder it because I don’t care about the preorder exclusives. And I’m not 100% decided on which platform I want it for (PC or PS4).
From the other general game thread:
EA Access** and Origin™ Access Basic** subscribers can enjoy up to 10 hours of play time at launch, along with 10% off the purchase of the full game. Origin Access Premier** subscribers will get full access to Star Wars: Squadrons on PC along with all the benefits of Basic as long as they subscribe
If this means you have to have a subscription just to play, that’s lame. It definitely means I won’t be preordering. Will have to wait and see the reviews and details of exactly what you can and can’t do with or without a supscription on the PC version
That sucks. I’m gonna transfer this conversation to the thread specifically for Squadrons.
Huh, I didn’t see that. I wonder if that’s specific to a particular platform. Like maybe you can play online on PS4 free for 10 hours before you have to pay for a PlayStationPlus. I remember when I got the first battlefront on PS4 they had an offer like that. I got to play online for about a week without a subscription. It’s one reason I opted to get battlefront 2 on pc so I didn’t have to worry about a subscription to access all the features.
I’d be pretty annoyed if they added a subscription requirement to the pc version. As I understand, very few pc games require one to play online.
Well crud, I replied to the Star Wars games thread before I saw this had its own topic. Eh, cut and paste from there:
Trailer!
Looks like they may have incorporated some version of the power management aspect from the X-wing game series, which is great! I always loved being able to shift power from shields to engines to laser cannons depending on my needs in the situation. It added a deeper level of realism to the whole “operating a high performance machine in space” aspect and is similar to the concept of energy management used when flying real aircraft (even though that’s managing potential vs kinetic energy, i.e. trading airspeed for altitude and vice versa).
Can’t wait to play this. I think I saw it’s retail at release is $40? Not too bad.

Interest piqued! I hope it’s more like X-wing and less like Rogue Squadron, but the title tells me the opposite is probably true. Regardless, I’m eagerly anticipating more info!
I never had an issue with Rey understanding BB-8 in TFA. But since then I’ve noticed pretty much EVERYONE understands astromechs in the Disney-Era produced Star Wars Media. Luke understands R2 in TLJ. Characters in Rebels understand astromechs regularly. Pretty sure there was some of it in season 7 of Clone Wars too. And now it bugs me. It just feels sloppy. It’s very obvious in the OT that the only one who actually understands what R2 says is C-3P0.
Also, I just watched an episode of rebels that had several landspeeder designs that were lifted straight from ANH (cool) but they were flying well above the ground (not cool). This is not the first time I’ve noticed it in Rebels either. It bothers me b/c in the OT landspeeders and their ilk always hovered just above the ground. In some of the additional media there was even a distinct differentiation between landspeeders, air speeders, and spaceships. And I always liked that. I guess there’s nothing in the films that outright defines them, but I always liked the idea that landspeeders were restricted to hovering mere inches or at the most a few feet off the ground. I dunno, maybe it’s just me.

I wonder if the artist realized the irony of using Darth Vader’s lightsaber hilt in this?
I never saw that giant bug in Jabba’s palace before!
I don’t think it was in the palace. Pretty sure that’s the creature that tries to scurry away in the desert before getting eaten by the frog with teeth.
And now I need a ladder labeled “STAR WARS 2” in my tool shed…
I know many more versions have been made since, but this was the original “han shot first” t-shirt, sold by pvponline. I had this one for many years and it’s now part of a quilt made from some of my favorite worn out t shirts.
In fact, I just remembered I had an old photo of me wearing this available. I don’t mean to sound boastful but I am kinda proud of this one. It’s me in the LoC holding the copyright deposit print of my favorite single reel of film ever made (reel 6 of ESB if its too small to read).
You guys are crazy! That is so OBVIOUSLY a car jumping one of those Hollywood “car flipper” half ramp things as it plows through some explosions. Yes it it’s composited into the shot (they probably didn’t want to destroy the set yet, or risk running over the actors). But it is ABSOLUTELY a big 70’s or 80’s style car crashing through those explosions! Plain as day! I’m flabbergasted that people are arguing it’s not! Lol. At least Ray gets it.
It’s a car!!
Is it? I ain’t see nothing. 😐
Yeah, the interior shot of the officers jumping away from the explosion. The thing crashing in through the window is very obviously a car. The Topps card shows the front bumper and wheel clearly. Watch the gif closely. Once you see it you can’t miss it. I even checked the actual movie just to be sure this wasn’t some joke, and it’s not! They crashed a car through something as part of the effects for that composite.
It’s a car!! I really want to know more about how this shot was created now!
Holy carp. I’ve never noticed the car crashing through the SSD bridge in ROTJ… now I can’t unsee it! Wow!
I don’t have time to watch The whole thing now, but just the intro was amazing. There were behind the scenes clips I’ve never seen before. Can’t wait to sit down and watch it all the way thru!
