18% of LD owners cite Star Wars as a main reason for keeping obsolete format

I aLso have the japan star wars definitive collection which is rot free unlike its american counterpart. which oddly has a darker transfer.

actually, it's probably not darker. while i may not get all the technicalites exactly right, the reason japanese laserdiscs (& other home video formats) look lighter when played on american televisions is because the setting for "black" is different in each country. I don't remember the name of the scale or units used to measure this (i.r.e.? maybe?) but i believe "black" is zero in japan, while it's like 7 or 8 in the U.S.?

oh and they used the same color corrected transfers lowry did, the same overly bright and overly blue as they always do.

they used to show the untouched theatrical versions on tv with some dialogue and scene cuts. like the heart ripping out scene in temple of doom being trimmed or cut out altogether.

perhaps we should start a new thread on indy, but i was under the impression that unlike STAR WARS, most people felt the Indy discs were pretty well done. I know they cleaned up some of the effects (matte lines, the glass snake reflection, etc.) but aside from that i thought they were relatively untouched. It doesn't surprise me to hear they screwed the color & whatnot, given the plethora of problems with the Star Wars set. i've just never heard anyone mention it, & it's been so long since i've seen any other version i didn't notice. Would anyone happen to have some comparison shots? I'd also be interested in seeing shots of the uncut heart rip out...

All I've got to say is this guy gets it! while i have some pretty different views about E.T. & the first Spiderman, this guy NAILS Star Wars... from an article on MSN:

"Star Wars" Episodes I, II, III (1999, 2002, 2005)
This tale has been told many times, but it bears repeating. When George Lucas reopened the Pandora's box of his "Star Wars" series to make three "prequels" for a new generation of consumers, he ruined everything. Even the original trilogy now feels like some kind of weird suppressed memory. Looking back, weren't they kind of chintzy and awful, too? They certainly are now with all the digital changes Lucas has added. But, by contrast with the new trio, Episodes IV, V and VI are "The Godfather" I and II and "Citizen Kane"! Forget Jar Jar Binks -- "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones" and "Revenge of the Sith" were all born dead, victims of lazy and cynical writing, filmmakers more interested in technological breakthroughs than in captivating viewers and, ultimately, a lack of vision. Lucas knew people would come see anything that said "Star Wars" on it, so he killed the goose to see where the gold came from. Even the force can't save him now.

Hey, the fact that there's now a better format around than vhs is kind of what puts a damper on being enthusiastic about the movies themselves isn't it? I'm being serious, by the way. There was no 4:3 and 16:9 with vhs, everything was just 4:3. Hence the glory of the 90's. One last time in '95, SE in '97, both on the same format, equal treatment.

Actually, the Trilogy was available in widescreen on VHS as early as 1993 in the states (not sure about foreign markets) so the pan & scan issue was there. Ah, unless you're talking about the whole 4:3 letterboxed vs anamorphically enhanced for 16x9 tv issue & not aspect ratios of the video content itself.... i see.... nevermind

Lucas to sue Star Wars designer
Time
have to agree with BBDV on this one. While SDS helmets were awesome, it was dumb to just try to sidestep the whole licensing issue.... Even if he DID design the helmet (which he didn't, he just MANUFACTURED them), it doesn't mean he owns the design. he was employed by the owner to make them FOR the owner.... My sister works in advertising as an artist & she designs stuff for clients all the time. Even though she designs it, it's not hers. it is owned by the person who paid the comission to have it designed...

Oh, BBDV, what are some of the differences of the SDS helmet vs screen used ones? I remember the SDS helmets being advertised as pulled from the original molds. I'm not surprised if they weren't, as many things have been advertised as such only to wind up being true "from a certain point of view".....

want to make your SW models old ILM style?
Time
he's pretty good, no doubt. but there are a LOT of subtle innaccuracies in his Star Wars models. If you want to see some really amazing stuff, check out the "studio scale" section of the Replica Prop forum (therpf.com). There are guys who scratch build exact replicas of the filming miniatures from all sorts of films (including LOTS of star wars). Some of these guys are just crazy with their accuracy, knowing EXACTLY which parts from which off-the-shelf-kits that ILM cannabolized when making the original filming models. the amount of knowledge on that forum is just awe-inspiring.

Anchorhead, i know i've mentioned it in the other thread, but if you really enjoyed SOTME that much, you should really look into the Han Solo adventures by Brian Daley. All three books (which are collected into one nowadays) came out before ESB & have very much the same feeling as SOTME, & IMO are actually much better. Aslo, Han & Chewie are the ONLY characters from the movies you'll meet.

Back on topic:

I think my interest would increase, if only a little bit. I love the OT & watch the 2006 GOUT several times a year. I've enjoyed collecting STAR WARS items (mostly toys, but anything i like really) for many years, but i'm very choosy about what i buy. I only buy toys & other things from the OOT (new or vintage) & i only get what i really like. If you like to collect, there ARE some really great things out there (2007's action figures based on ralph mcquarries original concept art being a shining example), but i do feel that my enjoyment of all these things are marred a bit by the whole OT/SE situation. It sucks picking through countless clonetroopers, PT characters & ghost anakin with hayden heads on the action figure pegs just to find a cool new han or lando.... Not to mention it's saddening to get used to watching all this great new HD content, then decide to watch star wars & pop in the GOUT.... It almost feels like your eyes can't focus properly at first.

I think if george would just give the original films the respect & restoration they deserve (based both on historical significance & fan demand) then i would be much happier & be able to more readily enjoy the aspects of Star Wars that i like & ignore those which i don't. As it is the aspects i dislike so far overshadow what i do (mostly b/c of George's emphasis on "his" versions being the only important ones) that it's difficult to fully enjoy Star Wars any more. I also think if they'd give equal acknowledgement (& a QUALITY home video release) to the originals then i'd be more free with my star wars purchases. As it is, i'm VERY choosy & only buy a small portion of what i'm interested in potentially buying. I also collect Godzilla & find i spend more time on that than Star Wars these days, but that could easily change if George would....

Splinter Of The Mind's Eye - review and thoughts.
Time
I read SOTME a few months ago & found it interesting. In my opinion, it felt VERY 70's, but so much Star Wars. There were parts of it that felt very "Star Warsy", but most of it felt more like a 1970's cartoon. A big part of that to me was the character Halla. Maybe it was just the way i interpreted the way she was written, but she just came off more like a children's cartoon character than a wise mentor in the force. over all i really disliked Halla. The rest of the book was ok, but not something i see my self reading again any time soon.

Now, the Han Solo Adventures on the other hand, was AWESOME. It's been a few years since i've read any of them, but they felt EXACTLY like what i'd imagine Han & Chewie would be up to not long before that fateful day at the cantina... & it definately had that "Big Galaxy" feel where you could go anywhere & do anything. Lots of interesting characters & aliens & whatnot. One of the books (i foget which one) even had the FIRST speeder bike chase in Star Wars, though i'm not sure they called them "speeder bikes". I think Daley really nailed the spirit of the characters of Han & Chewie as they were portrayed in the original film. Come to think of it, he did a pretty good job with Luke & Leia in SOTME, even if i didn't like the book as much as i'd hoped.

Over all, I'd say any fan of Star Wars prior to "A New Hope" or the sequels should definately check out all of these books!

speaking of.... are the original theatrical versions of all the trek movies available? I've only seen a few of the trek films, but like gaffer tape, i've only been able to find director's cuts of several of them.... It feels kind of like watching the special editions of Star Wars without ever having seen the orginals... ick! If they aren't on dvd, are they on laserdisc?

"The People Vs. George Lucas" documentary...
Time
slightly Off Topic....

I've said this before, but, "altering the Mona Lisa" is a BAD example. Leonardo carried that painting around with him for YEARS & CONTINUED to work on it for YEARS. he made MANY alterations before it became the masterpiece as we now know it.

& since i'm on the subject, just thought i'd clarify a pet peeve of mine. His name is Leonardo... NOT "da Vinci", despite what an ignorant book from recent years might have you believe... Calling him "da Vinci" would be like calling Michael Jordan "from Chicago".

Anyways, hope that doesn't come across too snarky, as it's not meant to be. Just wanted to clarify some common misconceptions about an incredible artist & his most famous painting.

Back on topic, this sounds like an interesting project & i hope it's recieved well. maybe it will help those in power to see the light & release the OOT in all it's glory. & i strongly agree with the sentiments of preserving the art as it was first shown. even if alterations are made, the original version should be preserved so people can see what made the landmark impact on people of the time, & then see how it changed over the years.

So, i guess i agree with the idea you're expressing with the mona lisa example. It's just that the mona lisa is a poor choice to exemplify that idea....

Bravo C3PX. It's nice to see a christian who thinks & talks like one. Hellhound i mean no offense, but if you really are a christian, then you should REALLY examine your attitude, behavior, & language.... It is NOT Christ-like at all.

People are discussing the Law (old testament vs new). I agree with everything C3PX has said, but i thought i'd add something. People who disdain christianity often point to the old testament and it's extreme nature & use it to make fun of an "evil" & mean spirited God, & "hypocritical" Christians who don't follow all the rules in the old testament. C3PX did a great job explaining why we as Christians no longer follow the law, but he didn't really touch on why it was given to us in the first place.

People often dislike christians b/c they go around calling everyone sinners which is "bad". Well, they are accurate in calling everyone (including themselves) sinners, but i think there is a stigma that people attach to that b/c they take it as an insult & don't fully understand what it means. Sin is simply anything that does not conform to God's will, character, or nature. Of course some of these are bad (murder, theft, etc.) but they don't have to be. it could be as simple as God making it clear to you His will is for you to buy an Xbox 360, & you buy a PS3 instead. (silly example, but it makes the point. it's not aligned with God's nature, & therefore sin).

So what's this got to do with the law? Well, God created us to be with him. His companions & family. He WANTS us to be with him. But he also gave us the ability to choose to follow & love him, or to reject him (to sin!!) this is b/c our love is far more worthwhile if it's voluntary. However, because we (the human race) have decided to sin (which began with Adam & Eve, but continues to this day) there's a problem. God cannot and will not allow sin in his presence. So He had to make a way to wash out our sinfulness. That's where Jesus Christ, the Saviour comes in. But why should we accept him? we seem to be ok, decent people right? wrong! Even the tiniest bit of sin will keep you from the presence of God. SOOOooooo.........

We get.... THE LAW!!! & it's a very harsh, unforgiving law. This is not b/c God is mean, or spiteful. The law is so harsh b/c it's built to show us that no matter how hard we try, we can never be sinless & worthy of God's presence under our own power. We need help. We need a Saviour! Thus leading us back to Jesus.

So, the law was in place to show us (after we chose to reject God & sin) that we can never work our way back into His good graces under our own power. Not b/c he doesn't love us, but b/c he can not allow sin in his holy presence. But he does love us!! He loves us so much that he actually died to win us back through Jesus! & when that happened, the law (which was really just a set of rules to get back in God's good graces & wash away sin) was fulfilled & therefore we no longer have to follow it.

HOWEVER, just b/c we are not bound to follow the law does not mean that we cannot learn from it. After all, it was put in place to show us our need for a saviour. Therefore we read it, learn from it, but do not have to follow it.

** Just thought i'd put a note expalining that the law i refer to is the old testament jewish law including, but not limited to, the ten commandments

need to make my computer region free
Time
Anyone know of any free programs that are compatible with Vista & will make my dvd drive region free? I'm looking for something like slysoft's AnyDVD (the trial version i downloaded worked great, but $50 for a version that won't expire is just ridiculous). Anyway, it needs to be a program that gets around the hardware region coding, not just the software. I'm not super computer literate & don't want anything "shady" (like many of the things on torrents). I just want a simple, easy to use program that will allow me to watch my import dvds on my new laptop. thanks!

A New Thought on George
Time
wasn't trying to pick on you fanfiltration. It was intended as a good humored, freindly correction (hence the thing about hating grammar nazis & the wink at the end). Just wanted to point out you had the wrong first name. no big deal. Unfortunately, they have yet to incorporate voice inflection into the internet & things don't always read the way they're meant to. Also, you might notice that i basically inferred that I was being a grammar nazi, but even i didn't use proper grammar (as C3PX pointed out).

Back on topic, as someone pointed out, Lucas didn't exactly say "screw you" to everyone & do his own thing on both STAR WARS & the prequels. Back in '77, even though he did basically say "screw you" to the studios in an effort to do his on thing, he still had mentors & trusted friends who challenged him & pushed him to do great things. Even though he was "doing his own thing" with the prequels, at that point he was surronded by "yes men" & would brush off anyone who questioned/challenged him.
