"They belong to Lucas and are his to change"
Time
most Directors know when to walk away from a completed project,

George's first attempt at StarWars, lasted 20 years and became 3 of the most successful films of all time, yet strangely he felt they weren't up to standard.

This led to his second attempt in 97, again it made a shitload of money but drew alot of criticism regarding some of the new changes.

In 2004 George has his third attempt for the DVD release, no doubt destined to make an even bigger shitload of money, but instead of listening to the criticisms levelled at the 97 edition and improving on them, he has opted to make even more unpopular changes, in order for them to fit in better with his less popular and less successful both critically and at the box office, Prequal trilogy. Surely after 3 attempts at the project and all you've managed to do is tarnish the memory of your original attempt, it must be time to let it go and move on to something new?

STAR WARS DVD Producer Van Ling answers the tough questions!
Time
I think my comments about everyone owning a little piece of the Star Wars Legacy have been taken out of context, or been misunderstood, I originally posted it as reaction to all the 'They're his movies and he can do whatever he wants with them!' people.

technically Yes he does have every right as the owner to distribute the original trilogy as he chooses to, but surely he has a moral obligation to the legions of fans over the last 27 years who fell in love with the original releases of the films and fuelled the creation of Georges Empire . George's original film may have been the seed, but it has been the fans that allowed that seed to flourish and grow into what it is today , if it wasn't for the public falling in love with Star Wars there never would have been any sequals, spin-offs , merchandising, Skywalker Ranch,ILM, Special Editions or prequals, and yet the contempt he seems to display towards fans of his original vision in interviews is staggering. I'm not a collector by any means, the only action-figures I own are the remnants of my original collection from when I was 12, which far from being mint in packet , have been well loved over the years and handed down to a baby brother so they are in various states of condition. Star Wars over the years has been near and dear to millions of people over the last 3 decades and I just believe we deserve a little bit more than an 'Apology' for falling in love with his 'unfinished' films all those years ago.

Now having said all that, I am over over the moon regarding George's recent comments/concessions towards releasing the Original Trilogy on DVD format once VHS is obsolete.

Did George Lucas take too much credit?

Lucas showed a roughcut of Star Wars to his friends: Steven Spielberg, Brian De Palma, Gloria Katz, Willard Huyck, John Milius, Matthew Robbins, Hal Barwood, and Time magazine film critic Jay Cocks. They were merciless and he made many a few wise changes thanks to their advice.

All of this is pretty well documented, although good luck getting Lucas to step up and admit it.

this part is well documented in the Empire of dreams doco. Speilberg was the only one who liked it

Help me settle an argument: does Luke use the ‘force choke’?
Time
it's a force choke, I think in ROTJ they deliberatley tried to play on the ambiguity of Lukes character, hence the basic black outfit and cloak (like father, like son) , hinting that he could possibly go either way, remain good or join his father on the darkside, I also agree with Bailywolf about Luke wanting to make an entrance, I don't believe he would have killed them.

Maybe some hope, recent interview with lucas

DB: You've said the last time you would issue the original versions was on VHS several years ago. But with VHS potentially becoming obsolete one day, will you release them on DVD?

GL: I don't know. I mean, when VHS becomes obsolete it will probably get released on DVD, I imagine. But I'm not going to spend the effort to restore them (to) what I consider to be the real film.

I wouldn't be so sure on that Lethe, in the space of a few weeks we've gone from George saying flatly that the original films don't exist anymore! , to they will " probably get released on DVD " as far as his comments about bothering to restore them, judging by the look of the abundance of clips of the original versions that appear in Empire of Dreams, I would say that alot of the restoration work has already been done. Now whether this change of heart is due to the fact that he's slowly bowing to the pressure from his fans and Fox to release the originals, or whether it was his (original vision) to get everyone to buy the version he wants us to see, and then 12 months down the track
(most likely 2007) get us to shell out another $60 to own the original versions.

Now as much as i'd like to think that the old guy was mellowing, the cynic in me thinks it has more to with clever marketing, either way I'll be first in line when VHS becomes obsolete, that day can't be too far away.

The intelligence of SW Fan boys....
Time
I just wanted to clarify,

I originally came to the thread because I found the theories that were being invented by these so called 'fan-boys' to cover up plotholes to be piss-funny, I don't have a problem laughing at their expense, ( thankfully they are few and far between on this site), nor do I have a problem with having a laugh at ole George's expense from time to time.

but then the thread and a lot of other threads on this site have recently degenerated into a viscious mean spirited bitch-fest, and the boards seem to have been hi-jacked by a small number of vocal newcomers. it's pointless arguing about who and what constitutes a 'fan-boy' , it's like two guys arguing about who has the smallest dick.
