Alright, I watched the scene again. It goes

  • Shot from the side of the puppet show (this will need VFX too)
  • Wide shot of kids laughing (they could be laughing at anything at this point, could just be the narrator’s description)
  • Shot of the puppet stage (we slot in whatever VFX we come up with)
  • Close up of kid laughing (could very easily just cut this out)
  • Wide shot of kids looking in wonder
  • Rey watching (maybe slot in some cheers here)

So, looking at it, if you cut the close up of the kid laughing, you really don’t need to do anything crazy here. My final suggestion would be you see the walker on one side, and then Luke pops into frame on the other side. Alien says “Skywalker,” or like “Mastah Jedai Skywalker” some shit like that. Nothing too over the top, gets the point across quickly and efficiently.

I think we could even slot in a closer shot of the stage after the kid laughing to have some breathing room for the scene.

Re: puppet Luke disappearing… I mean that’s literally what happens in TLJ. If you’ve seen TLJ, you know that’s the capper to the whole thing - Luke comes out, stands them down, then disappears. I don’t see why laughing at him disappearing would seem like a diss at Luke at all, that doesn’t even make sense.

I still don’t think it needs to be a 1:1 recreation of what happened in TLJ even disregarding people thinking the child’s laughing at Luke’s death. Seeing that the only ones who witnessed the face-off was the First Order and Luke himself (the Resistance having retreated into the caves to escape after he shows up), I don’t think the Galaxy at large would know what exactly happened. All they would know is that Luke faced off against the might of the First Order and won somehow.

Anyways, I guess this is my long winded way of saying that I’m absolutely for the “Luke batting away the laser shot” aspect of the puppet show rather than him just disappearing.

This is around 8 hours of work so far on the Puppet removal. It’s really tricky to get the pattern of the material looking like it hasn’t been clone stamped and mimicking the wind blowing in the background. It’s probably going to take another 10 mask layers to get right…

WOW… That is super impressive that you were able to do that, man!

I got pretty excited for this idea. That is, until I realized you guys were talking about replacing Williams with pop songs rather than other pieces of non-Williams scores. lol.

Regardless, this seems like a pretty fun exercise!

Yeah, that just sounds a lot harder. Haha, What did you have in mind?

Oh, nothing in particular. I had just expected this thread to be of people putting in Hans Zimmer and other composers’ scores into the films.

I don’t actually have a specific idea in mind. lmao.

Ok, I just rewatched the puppet scene in the movie proper.

So, I’m obviously very much down for pulling an Adywan and going all out with comping in live action puppets and all that (which BTW Chase, I’m hoping you might have some of the wooden puppets they sell at Galaxy’s Edge. That could be a nice tie in.)

HOWEVER…

I do have two alternate ideas of how we could possibly approach this scene and make it easier on those who are willing to do it. Unfortunately, I’m one of those guys who only has ideas and can’t really do them. So, I apologize in advance. Here’s what I’m thinking:

  1. We just comp in a Luke Skywalker puppet to the scene that’s already there. Meaning we don’t comp in a walker puppet and not make it explicitly about Luke facing off against the First Order in the last film. It could just be a “Legend of Skywalker”, that may or may not be real. I think of it kind like that book that came out around the time TLJ was released, detailing different far-fetched stories about Luke.

  2. We do it in Blender. Now, I have no idea how Blender works or if anyone around these parts know how to use it. However, there have been some AMAZING things I’ve seen that could be done with this software. The thing that made me realize we could possibly use this is this short where someone perfectly replicated the Rankin-Bass stop motion specials with it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4EuDkPD5x8. IDK, I feel like standard puppetry could be replicated good enough through it as well.

Anyways, those are my ideas. Again, sorry that I’m just putting ideas out there rather than helping along with them.

Just thought of a fun change that could make for a good easter egg. When Rey is on Pasanna and stumbles across the kids watching the puppet show, how hard would it be to make it look like Luke versus the First Order and slightly extend the shot as a nice callback to TLJ. Especially with Rey’s reaction afterwards. Doesn’t seem like it would be too complicated for someone to mock up. Not even sure if it is worth the trouble though…

It’s nice seeing something you suggested like forty pages ago coming to fruition haha

Here’s hoping forty pages from now, someone implements my idea of adding laser bolts to the “fly over” shot during the Mustafar Minute. lmao.

Sequel Trilogy Rescoring Ideas Thread
Time

So, I was originally going to post this in Hal’s thread but I thought it would be better suited to put it in here.

I know that there’s been a lot of talk throughout different edits of TROS about putting in “Duel of the Fates” (either during the Sith Choir scene or during the duel on the Death Star). Anyways, I found this version of the song that I’ve never heard before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYyI659vKkg

Apparently, it was one of the first attempts at the theme (hence why it’s not as refined as the soundtrack version) and was used in several video games around the time of TPM’s release. Anyways, I wanted to put it out there for any potential editors who would want to use it!

How many times do I have to say this? It’s clear in the actual film Palpatine changes his mind and turns back to Rey because Kylo Ren redeemed himself. His plan was to possess Kylo Ren, that is until he redeemed himself.

Chill out, man. I honestly don’t get why you’ve been so defensive about this in this thread and lashing out against people.

The movie leaves a lot for the audience to figure out, though, and if I have to go find external resources to have that question answered, or have some stranger on the internet lecture me for not understanding it, then I consider that the filmmakers’ failure for not being able to communicate their intention to the audience clearly.

Honestly, this has been my major problem with the film from the jump. As soon as I kept seeing questions this movie raised being answered by things like a reference book or an amusement park ride instead of in the film proper, I knew that this film was a complete failure in my eyes.

I think it’s also indicative of how Disney’s going to start treating films, tv shows, and other media as pieces of content rather than individual things that will stand up on its own. But, that’s a whole other can of worms to open…

Okay, okay… I’m spitballing here, it might sound crazy… but what if we’re approaching this backwards? What if the most straightforward way to sell Palpatine’s plan is to actually take him at his word at the end, and instead remove all traces of him wanting Rey dead?

Opening on Exogol: Palpatine offers the fleet “if you do as I ask.” Kylo, after a moment considering it, silently lowers his saber in agreement. Palpatine smiles menacingly to end the scene: a deal has been struck, but we the audience don’t know what. We can still guess, however, that it could be Rey-related, because Hal’s edit transitions right into Rey meditating.

Board room meeting now has a new context to it. When an officer asks Kylo what the Emperor wants, Kylo silences him immediately. We the audience don’t know what Kylo and the Emperor’s deal was, so we don’t know that Kylo’s outburst is unreasonable; on the contrary, we’re now more intrigued that Kylo is keeping this so secretive.

When Palpatine chastises Kylo after Pasaana, remove references to killing Rey. Full remaining dialog:
“Perhaps you have betrayed me. Do not make me turn my fleet against you.”
“I know where she’s going. She will never be a Jedi.”
“Make sure of it.”
We now know for certain, though we already suspected, that Kylo’s agreement involves Rey somehow. The threat, however, is still vague.

From here out, Kylo mentions twice aboard his ship on Kijimi that Palpatine tried to kill Rey as a kid, reveals that she’s a Palpatine, and suggests that they should team up instead. We think we get it now: not only is this the big reveal that Rey is a Palpatine, but it’s the big reveal of Kylo’s mission to kill her and finish the job.

After Endor, Palpatine says that Leia has ruined his plans. We assume this is because Kylo couldn’t kill her. But we’re still assuming wrong.

Finally, on Exegol, in a genuine third act twist, we learn the truth from Palpatine himself, unedited: he never wanted her dead, he wanted her here with him. The audience can now infer that bringing Rey to Exogol was Kylo’s true mission all along, and Kylo had lied to Rey about Palpatine trying to kill her as part of his attempt to manipulate her to his own ends, planning to betray Palpatine from the beginning. Even the times it seemed Kylo was genuinely trying to kill Rey, he was spiting the Emperor rather than serving him. And since Kylo must have actually known Palpatine’s true goal all along, as Ben he is now rushing back to Exogol because he knows Rey is playing into Palpatine’s hands.

Thoughts?

I know it seems like we’re not going this route for the “Rey Palpatine” version but could this possibly work for a “Rey Nobody” version?

IDK, I just really love this idea and it sucks that it seems like it won’t be implemented at all. 😕

“My boy, I made Snoke… The First Order was just the beginning. I will give you so much more.”

“You’ll die first.”

“I’ve died before. Kill me, and my spirit will pass into you. As all the Sith live in me.”

If we wanted to remove the line, I imagine it’d be best to simply remove the footage where it takes place. Maintain the pace, just without that line present. The Snoke line remains prior to any shots walking us closer to Palpatine including his clone vat.

Not sure whether to, but if so that’d probably be best.

You know, I never really had a problem with the “Voices” line. But, I actually really dig the sound of this change.

She trained at one of the original Jedi temples and is now the protector of the sacred texts that she took from the library before it was destroyed. As the last Jedi (as far as we know, Filoni…), she’s also the protector of their entire culture in general (a thousand generations live in you now).

Also Rey might not even know about the colors, and lightsaber color lore is inconsistent and doesn’t matter anyway. Cal Kestis had a hot-pink one when I played Fallen Order.

Damn, that’s actually a really good story related reason for it.
