That doesn't make sense..... That's like saying, well, we had Jedi in one of the movies, they shouldn't be in another.... That's the same stupid mentality that got us Ewoks instead of wookies in ROTJ.

And haven't you heard the saying that a girl will marry a man like her father... Lots of truth in that... So think about it..... Maybe that's secretly why she was attracted to Han, because he seemed similar to the man who helped shape who she is.

and its your mentality that got us the Jedi order as we know it in the prequels

Erm...no, fish. It's George Lucas's (edit: unstable) mentality that got us the Jedi in the prequels. There's a very big difference.

In any case, I think the movies need this contrast between different archetypal characters to add interest and drama. At the moment, all the main guys are sterile monks with no personality. As well as being more like knights than they are currently, they need that interaction with characters with differing ideologies and approaches to situations.

E.g.

Consider this. Obi Wan and Bail Organa have ended up in "aggressive negotiations". The blast doors have closed and Obi Wan begins suggesting they look for an alternative route around (or something else suitably reserved and Jedi Like), at which point Bail Shoots the control panel and the doors open. Bail gives a cocky shrug and a smile.

Or the opposite kind of situation.

There are a troop of enemy clones up ahead. Bail goes to raise his blaster only for Obi Wan to stop him.

"There are alternatives to fighting"

He uses the force to create some kind of diversion and the clones leave. To which Bail says something like "and I thought this was gonna be fun"

That's just plucked out of thin air. Actual dialogue would be better, but you can see the potential there for comedy and interest as well as conflicts between main characters.

No...Han Solo isn't "like a Jedi". He's the ANTI Jedi! Jedi are disciplined, diplomatic, peacekeeping knights. Han Solo is a badass rogue who doesn't do things by the book. He shoots first and asks questions later (until the SE).

I think you've missed the whole point of Han's character. "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid"

I did suggest earlier that Obi-Wan had a apprentice which he had to let go in favour of Anakin (by switching the lines directed at Qui-Gon to Obi-Wan and maybe showing a young pupil being led away by the council).

Well the betrayed and murdered line (at least to me) suggests that Luke's father and Darth Vader personally knew eachother, possibly faught alongside eachother, and that it was a betrayal with real emotional weight to it. I think in my dream refilming of the prequels, Obi Wan would have to have 2 apprentices. One brash and impatient (who I'll refer as Hayden) the other more talented and the more favoured (Anakin) who seems, on the surface, a better person.

Maybe Anakin is common enough a name for both pupils to share the name?

It could be the Star Wars Galaxy version of Mohammad, James or John.

Ah yes, but you have to remember that  screenwriter would never name 2 significant characters the same name, however realistic it may be "in universe". We have a challenge in fan editing in not only fixing George Lucas's non sensical story and universe, but also retaining filmic conventions too. :-p

I bring this up because it's recently got an airing over on the Star Wars Discussion Forum but what if the slave explosive device mentioned in TPM could not be removed but only deactivated.

Some party could have found a means to reactivate it and blow up Anakin (maybe in the Jedi Temple) but he survived long enough to be put into the robot suit and face Obi-Wan only to get further mangled in the process.

That could be a way (admittedly a convoluted way) to keep Anakin and Vader separate enough to further obscure them being the same person come ESB.

It's a flimsy idea at the moment but maybe a fresh set of lobes could flesh it out into something that makes more sense.

I've always hated that explosive device thing so I don't like the idea myself.

Besides, ANY method of seperating Anakin from Vader and implying that he died has to also account for the problematic line in ANH "A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil"

EVERYTHING would be solveable if they'd been a trio of heroic Jedi rather than a duo - the third Jedi (young Sebastian Shaw lookalike) also being a student of Obi Wan's and also "a great pilot and a cunning warrior". It can be implied (but not directly seen) that this third Jedi has been "betrayed and murdered" by Hayden (no longer referred to as "Anakin", and who you assume to have become Vader by the end).

Hayden's character as a "bad egg from the start" can be retained somewhat, and the actual "Anakin" would be a great guy, who at no point do you suspect could ever be seduced by the dark side. The revelation in TESB would be incredible at this point, as you'd have taken it for granted that Luke's dad was dead and that little piss-ant Hayden was the betrayer.

Edit: Additionally, Padme would not need to be a main character at all. Or even called Padme (what a dumb name). Anakin is just a family man. We see him kiss his pregnant (possibly Jedi) wife goodbye when going off to fight in the clone wars.

The only significant scene with her, I envision it like this: Her husband (Anakin) presumed dead, she realises that all the Jedi are being hunted down by Darth Vader and that her newly born child (not revealed that they're twins) is no longer safe. She gives the boy to Obi Wan who, at the end of the film, entrusts him with his estranged brother.

Off camera, she has given the baby girl to Bail Organa (who also needs to be a more rough and tumble Han Solo type rather than the dull Senator he's written as in the prequels)

What exactly is this project about and are there any samples of cuts/edits/effects?

Trooperman's sig has a link to what the project is about. There are some poor quality clips on youtube somewhere I believe (though don't ask me where) but it's really worth checking out the workprint, which ben_danger was kind enough to send me. It really has to be seen to be believed how promising this edit is. Many of the changes are just inspired!

So RedLetterMedia's new review has some interesting points about how the prequels could be improved.

Skip to around the 30 min point of part 1 and you'll see what I mean. Some would be relatively simple to pull off e.g. the general mood of coruscant with decaying buildings, less air traffic and more poverty along with Palpatine's propoganda over megaphones.

It's completely true (though it's never occurred to me before his review) that the effects of the war just aren't felt on Coruscant at all. Life just carries on as normal, which is ridiculous!

Then there's the suggestion that the clones should have been the opposing side (or at least utilized for the purpose of espionage and/or infiltration by cloning and replacing high ranking Republic officials - just like in Harry potter where you had people at the Ministry of Magic being put under the imperius curse) and all the republic troopers would just be regular soldiers forced into service, which I've always thought is how it should've been.

This of course would probably be impossible.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

So what would the one thing be, if changed in the Blu-Ray OT, that would cause the biggest fan outrage since Greedo shooting?

A Jar Jar cameo (other than the "wesa free" at the end of ROTJ).

Following up on (aged and scarred) Hayden being inserted into the unmasking scene, I'd actually be all for it (yes, really!) IF he'd actually been a competent actor in the prequels. As it stands, I'd just resent the change as Hayden never did the character any justice in his performance. That whiny asshole was NOT Anakin Skywalker. Furthermore, his grin as a force ghost makes him look like a child molester.

If he'd actually been any good, it would add much needed continuity (though this would have been better addressed by, oh I dunno, getting someone with a vague resemblance to Sebastian Shaw and an English accent to play Anakin in the first place!!!!)

And for anyone who'd be offended by the removal of Sebastian Shaw, they still have the originals....oh wait.

P.S. This thread has been GOLD! So many laugh out loud moments.

Star Wars Episode II: The Galaxy Divided (The Brash Cut) - CANCELLED
Time

Well I've had a massive break from the project as learning all the after effects stuff along with colour correction was really daunting. Plus I have a faddy personality and various disparate hobbies (all of them geeky :p)

I've been getting back into the edit in the last couple of weeks though. I'm really getting to grips with the rotobrush tool in AE now and am working on a shot that has the potential to be pretty amazing even though it lasts only a second. Once I've put something presentable together, I'll post samples.

I think bobgarcia has either run out of creative energy or has become bored with the project. It's too bad since most of his reworkings were the best I've seen.

Dude, come on. Taking a break is not a bad thing. It's like drawing. You can't draw 4 hours straight - you'll mess something up.

Draw for 2 hours, take a break and come back fresh. :) It's better that way.

Exactly. If you spend all your time doing something you're gonna get tired and lose passion for it. That's why I've been taking a break from my own edit, but sort of getting back into it now.
