As much as I'd like to say 'You're right, that does sound stupid', I'm not gonna. No it's just not possible, but at the price of todays DVD burners it's not hard to justify shelling out a few bucks for the benefit of having one.

I believe it all has to do with the laser width, a DVD laser is 650nm and a CD is a whopping 780nm, so no, not exactly possible.
