If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place
Time

You must take really shitty care of your things if your blu-rays are skipping. I understand you literally have to TRY and damage those bloody things. And if you're throwing your whole collection out, have fun with your old 4:3 P&S tapes derived from beat-up film prints and shitty early restoration techniques. I'm sure they'll love to spend quality time with you again.

What's the status of the Originals? (the theatrical cuts of the Original Trilogy)
Time

Way to throw him under the bus for no reason. I think even King Kong features better compositing than Star Wars... I'm actually not against cleaning up things like the speeder shot. From what I've seen the drop of quality is genuinely apparent and not just a figment of Lucas's imagination. Sure, you might not notice it on a release print - but, honestly, what official restoration comes from one of those? This isn't replacing the effect we're talking about. We're talking about presenting it as best possible. So I say DNR the hell out of scenes like the landspeeder one, so long as you don't touch it any further. Maybe that makes me less of a purist than I thought, but cleaning up a scene (in moderation) like that would be a far cry away from removing wires or mirror reflections.

I heard that the VFX guys who won for Life of Pi got cut off as soon as they mentioned how they hadn't gotten paid for doing the effects yet and were going out of business.

I guess the Academy likes pretty things, but doesn't care about actually keeping them around.

This made me incredibly sad, but I was glad to see people from the industry call the Academy out on this - at least, if Kevin Smith counts. I'm sure he's not the only one who did.

Rushmore (1998)

I remembered watching part of this film years ago and not particularly liking it. Now having watched it, I thought it was okay. Gotta love Bill Murray.

It's a fun if inconsistent movie. Definitely was more invested by the end than I was at the middle.

getting really sick of the quote functions breaking everything on simple text editor...

wait why did it put my post in italics what

Yep. 50 years, only two awards and...we get some film clips sporadically cut together cropped and re-scored and remixed. At least they decided to do something worthwhile and invite Dame Shirley. ;) The rumor was that the producers had wanted to have all 5 original actors and that other guy onstage but obviously they have no idea how much a certain Scot still has reservations.

Like I said, mostly unoriginal. But hey, I still enjoyed it. No different than any of the annual montages (In Memoriam + whatever else they usually do.)

Seth Macfarlane did better than I expected, which really, isn't saying much.

Thoughts? They're on the air now obviously. I've been tuning in sporadically.

Seth's been... eh. He is doing better than I expected but there's a lot of jokes - especially that last crack he made before Selma Hayek came on - that are making me cringe.

What are your thoughts on the winners?
Predictions for what's left?
Is Seth killing it, or killing the Oscars?

Can we do a movie club?
Time

I agree with sean's idea. Perhaps we should do a weekly movie night? Chat in the IRC or something and leave it to ... ehem, however you choose... to find the movie of the week.

A more traditional movie club would also be interesting, but I think the above could be a lot of fun.

As for the above's shameless plug, you forgot to link your thread.

Perhaps I could enlist a little help here.  I am trying to install the Star Wars: X-wing Collectors Series on my Windows 7 machine.  This is the re-release of X-wing and TIE Fighter on CD for Win95.  Though I was surprisingly able to install the only slightly newer X-wing Alliance, I cannot install this one.  I've tried setting the Install file to compatibility for Windows 95, I've tried running it as an administrator, but no success.  Now I know that there are some amazing technical geniuses who frequent this site, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to install a stubborn 32 bit game on a 64 bit operating system?

I haven't played these games for ages, and I'm anxious to do so once again...in my very limited free time, of course.

It's likely a 16bit install file. I ran into this problem with The Phantom Menace game as well, actually. If you know what you're doing you might be able to modify the directions from this guide to suit X-Wing. I'd also recommend looking up VDMSound to see if it works with Windows 7. The old soundcard emulator is a treasure and helps run a lot of old stuff.
