You must take really shitty care of your things if your blu-rays are skipping. I understand you literally have to TRY and damage those bloody things. And if you're throwing your whole collection out, have fun with your old 4:3 P&S tapes derived from beat-up film prints and shitty early restoration techniques. I'm sure they'll love to spend quality time with you again.
EA already does that with their sports games. You have to pay something like $10 dollars just to take it to a friend's house if you want full functionality.
Way to throw him under the bus for no reason. I think even King Kong features better compositing than Star Wars... I'm actually not against cleaning up things like the speeder shot. From what I've seen the drop of quality is genuinely apparent and not just a figment of Lucas's imagination. Sure, you might not notice it on a release print - but, honestly, what official restoration comes from one of those? This isn't replacing the effect we're talking about. We're talking about presenting it as best possible. So I say DNR the hell out of scenes like the landspeeder one, so long as you don't touch it any further. Maybe that makes me less of a purist than I thought, but cleaning up a scene (in moderation) like that would be a far cry away from removing wires or mirror reflections.

Don't let Xhonzi hear you say that, he really likes that film.

I heard that the VFX guys who won for Life of Pi got cut off as soon as they mentioned how they hadn't gotten paid for doing the effects yet and were going out of business.
I guess the Academy likes pretty things, but doesn't care about actually keeping them around.
I should have known we'd just spend our time half-seriously debating what film to watch...

Rushmore (1998)
I remembered watching part of this film years ago and not particularly liking it. Now having watched it, I thought it was okay. Gotta love Bill Murray.
I'd be in for Argo. I haven't seen it yet.

Yep. 50 years, only two awards and...we get some film clips sporadically cut together cropped and re-scored and remixed. At least they decided to do something worthwhile and invite Dame Shirley. ;) The rumor was that the producers had wanted to have all 5 original actors and that other guy onstage but obviously they have no idea how much a certain Scot still has reservations.
That was a lot of fun, yeah. Very well done, and the visuals that accompanied it were a pretty good if unoriginal montage.
edit: Seriously, what is up with all the Williams cues tonight? I mean I love him but... is it like this every year?
Thoughts? They're on the air now obviously. I've been tuning in sporadically.
Seth's been... eh. He is doing better than I expected but there's a lot of jokes - especially that last crack he made before Selma Hayek came on - that are making me cringe.
What are your thoughts on the winners?
Predictions for what's left?
Is Seth killing it, or killing the Oscars?

1 - Yoda actually says that Luke is too old to be trained in ESB
2 - Yeh, that's one of the problems thanks to the prequels
3 - Owens surname is Lars and not Skywalker
A little.
I am SO SO sick of getting sick. God dammit. I've been back at school less than a month and this is the second time. I've been taking emergen-c and stuff, so I don't get why this keeps happening to me. My immune system isn't particularly weak, that I know of...
I agree with sean's idea. Perhaps we should do a weekly movie night? Chat in the IRC or something and leave it to ... ehem, however you choose... to find the movie of the week.
A more traditional movie club would also be interesting, but I think the above could be a lot of fun.
As for the above's shameless plug, you forgot to link your thread.

It's all about Worms, baby.
I spent more time on that game that I think any other. In college we would have HOURS of hotseat games, with pretty much anyone on the dorm floor wandering in for a round.

Gotta love being an English major. Ever since I decided I wasn't sure I wanted to be a teacher everyone's been telling me I'm doomed and should really switch. *sigh*

Perhaps I could enlist a little help here. I am trying to install the Star Wars: X-wing Collectors Series on my Windows 7 machine. This is the re-release of X-wing and TIE Fighter on CD for Win95. Though I was surprisingly able to install the only slightly newer X-wing Alliance, I cannot install this one. I've tried setting the Install file to compatibility for Windows 95, I've tried running it as an administrator, but no success. Now I know that there are some amazing technical geniuses who frequent this site, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how to install a stubborn 32 bit game on a 64 bit operating system?
I haven't played these games for ages, and I'm anxious to do so once again...in my very limited free time, of course.
There's spoken dialogue in the English versions as well, but I believe it's all done by imitators. Those files wouldn't be as useful for a fanedit as the dubbing could be jarring.
If someone could drop a PM once this arrive son a free service I'd appreciate it. In all honesty I can see myself never finishing watching this, but I want to have it for should I choose to go for it.
We do. Somewhere. I'm in it, but... I can't find it!
I approve. I need to beat that fucking game.
