What don't you get about 2001?

It's a pretty basic story which I understood perfectly well when I was 11 or 12yrs old (I might have seen it before then but I can't remember).

My strongest memory of Eye Wide Shut was remonstrating with the couple having sex behind me in the cinema (it wasn't even during an erotic scene).

It was a regular Odeon cinema too.

How grotesque.

Perhaps "not getting it" was the wrong terminology. I followed the plot well enough, but I do feel like I'm still missing something.

I am a Kubrick virgin no more. Did a little mini-marathon on Saturday of 3 of his films, and ... well...

Eyes Wide Shut - I'm really not sure why we watched this one first but it was a good place to start. It's really jarring seeing modern actors in a film like this where Kubrick shows off his love of static camera shots. While I'm pretty iffy on the plot, the cinematography was as strong as I'd been told. It was worth a view, but I'm not sure I'd watch it again. Minus the weird stuff, it felt like a more engaging version of Lost in Translation. 8/10

The Shining - This was my favorite of the three. I loved the steadycam, I loved the sets, I loved everything. Very few films have me going "oh my God" over and over during the more intense sequences without resorting to shock value of hard cuts and surprises. Being familiar with the intensity of the shooting schedule and Kubrick's infamous psychological torture of Shelley Duvall definitely highlighted the tension. And, as always, props to Jack Nicholson. The man knows crazy. Highly recommended for the 10 people on this board who haven't seen it yet. 10/10

2001: A Space Odyssey - Loved the cinematography. It's the most visually stunning film I've ever seen, even before the Jupiter sequence. That said, I didn't get the film. If I'd paid for it in the sixties, I definitely would have walked out. Sorry, folks. I can't even give it a rating. There's a LOT to love, but ... really, it's more an experience than a film. Hope that makes sense. Doing the whole Echoes synch with the Jupiter sequence probably helped... there was one jump in the vinyl we used that made up for human error shortly in. If you haven't done it before, it's great. Seriously. Do it.

All that said, it was definitely worth the time. I'm still thinking about it two days later, and that's worth something... right?

^I'll be back, 2001. I'm not done with you.

in an effort to re learn how to ACTUALLY be social I am staying away from the internet for the next month. And I will no longer answer text messages, only phone calls. I'm tired of hiding behind technology and it being the only reason I have friends. Good night everybody. This has more to do with my personal life but I should stay away from OT.com as well.

oh dear God did this even last a week? lol

I'll believe it when I see it. Micechat, though known for being one of the more reliable sources, reports on conjecture and early-stage planning. The right exec (ha!) could put the kibosh on this. One can hope.

If this is true? Well, let's just say I made the right choice not renewing my pass. Any and all pretenses I clung to about Disney magic are over. All about the Benjamins... by the way, it costs more than one of those to get into the park now if you include parking. :/

3) George Lucas told Lawrence Kasdan that anyone can use the Force

It's just like doing yoga, Lucas told Kasdan during a marathon story conference. Or karate. "If you want to take the time to do it, you can do it." It just takes practice and concentration. Also, Lucas clarified that a "Jedi Master" like Yoda is different from a Jedi Knight," because "he's a teacher, not a real Jedi." And Yoda is like a Guru, who "doesn't go out and fight anybody." And Yoda wouldn't be any good in a fight, against someone like Darth Vader. Kasdan responded: "I understand what you're saying, but I can't believe it; I am in shock."

What happened to this guy, Jorge Lucas?

While I don't like the fact that it needed to be explained (midi-what now?) I actually like the Force as an ability that only certain people can access. Makes it more mysterious without giving it a label.

As for Yoda, um... really wish he'd stuck to that.

Info: Recommended Editions of Disney Animated (and Partially Animated) Features
Time

^I remember once Harmy made a comment about how the teal/orange shift that everyone complains about nowadays turned out to be a pretty regular thing with film in the '70s. He even cited Star Wars, particularly - as I recall - a version of this screenshot taken from his Despecialized Edition. I really wish I could find that post now...

note-source comes from zombie84's "corrected" version on the savestarwars website. I can't find the original screenshot comparison thread anymore... guess it was unstickied.

Info & Help: Dragon Ball "Best of Breed" hybrid... maybe

^Toei literally threw them out. Standard practice of theirs at the time.

Mind sharing your sources on the broadcast audio? I know the folks on Daizex who have 'em tend to keep it to themselves unless they attempt to offer their 1st-run tapes to Toei or FUNimation.

Too bad the Levels sets were canceled and we're getting a widescreen blu-ray set instead :/

Man, DragonBall fans are a creative breed. Someone's always trying to fix something (and, IMO, rightfully so.) I wish you the best on this project.

It would be interesting to see the FUNi colors applied to the DragonBox, but I think a middle ground would be a better approach. I've always felt the blue bricks were a tad too yellow... and there's all sorts of video artifacts (rainbowing etc.) that take away from the quality whether it's correct or not.

Disney has outright admitted that it's an editing error that occurred when splicing the film back together during the restoration and conversion process. Probably the same reason why the Scuttle fade is missing too. It's not deliberate, it's lazy.
I knew it was a print-related issue! Is there any chance they'll be fixing it or are they not bothering? Honestly, this blu - for once, with Disney - looks worth the upgrade.

Video Games - a general discussion thread
Time

My experiences playing GTA V with friends:

"Oh hey, it's downtown!"

"Oh hey, it's the pier!"

"Oh hey, it's... Long Beach! Next to the airport? Hm, OK..."

"Oh hey, it's Westwood! Why was this so hard to find?"

So, needless to say, being a well-travelled local in LA makes the game pretty entertaining in of itself. I don't really play games that glorify violence like this, but I certainly don't mind watching. The map puts LA Noire to shame.

Star Wars OT SE 1080p 70mm Filmized Concept (a WIP)
Time

I gotta admit I find it so ironic that people are starting to hate teal and orange tints in modern films but when you go back to the 70s that's what they were doing even then. I'm glad to see you seem to be doing that here.

This edition, should it ever go past experiment, is likely for me. My biggest issue with the SE comes from the color timing.

I'm no expert, but I'd take a guess at Asperger syndrome. Milder symptoms than autistic disorder, but often have problems in certain areas of language, such as understanding humour or figures of speech.

I know a good number of people with Aspergers and I'd personally put him further on the autism spectrum than that. Remember Timbox? I recall he was a high-functioning autistic as well.
