JOHN WILLIAMS: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Remastered/Remixed Edition (Released)

the final version will be in FLAC.

Here is a video comparing the 1997 SE discs with this set:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OH3kuxSlGyo&list=UUpiSKptlUDyEs_fNzZusKDg&index=1&feature=plcp

for clarity, this is the sound I am kind of going for: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8I4hra7PeQ

constructive
criticism would be welcome

Fishman: I've always HATED the 'muddled and fuzzy' quality of the original Jedi score! And love that you're going for a "Raiders" style sound. So far, I love what you've done with it SQ-wise! It sounds like a normal John Williams 80's score SHOULD sound like! And obviously so; didn't even give it a close listen. Though I would prefer a version that wasn't about getting the 'film cut' (e.g. I quite like "The Emperor Arrives" as presented on the soundtrack even if it a good bit of it was cut out for the film). Still - it's amazing that you're talking this on! I'll be sure to post any bit of 'constructive criticism' I can come up with, and will try to help any other was I can!

Raiders of The Lost Ark in IMAX!
Time

The film is not playing at the NYC Lincoln Square 13 (15-70, not DLP), which is still playing "The Dark Knight Returns" on its IMAX screen, and I haven't actually been able to confirm that it's playing on 15-70, well, anywhere. Granted there are, what, < 100 such screens worldwide? But the other IMAX-equipped theaters close by either say nothing about it (Liberty Science Center) or it's unclear what the format is (the New Rochelle theater has both DLP and 15-70).

I'm planning on seeing it next wk regardless at the Empire 25, because come on, it's Raiders, and I've never seen it in a theater before. There are screenings now and again at some of the smaller theaters but I almost always miss them. The 35mm was at the last Monday night Bryant Park movies event, but as we're Not In College Anymore getting a seat is a hassle, and the audio/video quality is awful - it's more of a social outing than anything else, often enough. Good way to discover old movies though.

I've never seen DLP IMAX but I've had my expectations duly lowered by all the negative fanfare.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

It's barely a situation; that's why no new mkv is getting released. If you just want to be able to listen to the ac3 with the movie and are using a Windows laptop connected to a TV, you could just add the audio you want in the dub field of the Open File dialog of Media Player Classic Home Cinema (open with Ctrl + O):

Media Player Classic "Open File" Dialog

A more permanent solution not dependent on what playback program you use would be to use MKVToolNix to mux the new audio file in and leave out the old one:

OK, so, the AVCHD will get a reupload once I mux it with the new tracks. The MKV won't!!! I'm just gonna add the info into the nfo and that's that. I'll make sure all audio is OK in the BD release.

So there will be no audio fixes for the MKV?  Isn't the AVCHD at a lower bitrate, making whatever fixes applied to it not as high in quality as the MKV?

This is going to get beyond frustrating before it's all over with.  Can someone just please confirm if the MKV is going to be fixed or not, and how to obtain the fix?

Thanks.

Lol dude, chill out.

hairy_hen (two pages ago) said that he'll be re-releasing the 640kbps AC3 as well.

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Harmys-STAR-WARS-Despecialized-Edition-HD-REMASTERED-is-now-officially-released/post/594340/#TopicPost594340

You can use either the 640kbps AC3 or the 448kbps AC3 with the already-released MKV; you just have to remux it yourself - because, as Harmy said in the above quote, he won't be remuxing the MKV - or else use the dub functionality in Media Player Classic.

In any case, hairy has also said that the issues are far less pronounced with the 640kbps AC3 originally released on the mkv:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Harmys-STAR-WARS-Despecialized-Edition-HD-REMASTERED-is-now-officially-released/post/594217/#TopicPost594217

Outside of the first 30 secs of it (the Fox Fanfare), I didn't notice any issues with it on my surround system, anyway.

LOL dude. I'm glad you figured it out, but I think I'll always be puzzled by people who think that Star Wars could possibly be considered a work of science fiction.

Well, you have laser swords and laser guns and space stations, new worlds, alien creatures...etc. So I don't think sci-fi is completely off base considering that there is so much technology/creatures/bizarre stuff in every frame.

But up until now I considered it more of an adventure like an Errol Flynn movie.  When Luke throws the cable up and the two of them swing across the chasm with the fanfare and then those beautiful, soaring, strings- that just sums up the whole movie for me and gives it away as being a complete homage to the Golden Age.

I hope I'm not starting to sound pretentious;)

EDIT: And then with Empire Strikes Back it becomes an homage to a Wagner opera.  The music reflects this.

And then with Return of the Jedi, it gets this really deep, Shakespeare, father/son kind of feel which is much more serious and less tongue in cheek than anything that came before it.  These two sequences:

-Vader vs. Luke in ESB

-The throne room sequence in ROTJ

gave a huge, epic feel to Star Wars- and the prequels were based on these two scenes, not on the vast majority of the OT which was adventure and fantasy and paying tribute to Western culture of the past...whether as recently as Errol Flynn or as far back as Wagner.

Sorry for rambling and for hijacking this thread. Thanks again harmy for an outstanding job on this.

Not pretentious at all. OK, maybe, but I thought it was well-said. If you haven't already read it, you should get zombie84's book (now available, apparently, in Kindle format!):

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=the+secret+history+of+star+wars

But as to the laserswords/space stations and all that: I am reminded of an old saying from the Mishnah - don't look at the jar, but at what is inside it. I think you seem to get it now, what with your references to Errol Flynn and such...but I'm also thinking of this review, which called the 2009 Star Trek 'the best Star Wars since 'The Empire Strikes Back'', and I think explicates pretty well how to avoid the 'lasersword' trap you fell into.

I watched this all the way through today.  Very, very nice work on bringing the colors much more in line with what they should be compared to the official releases- really gives it a different feeling completely.

It occurred to me watching it that "Star Wars" is actually a fairy tale- not science fiction.

When Ben appears and uncloaks his hood,  the entire frame turns really, really bright and white.  He is like the white wizard with a halo all around him.  That's why he wears a hood too.

The Force and the force theme are magic- it's fantasy, a fairy tale.

I don't know why, but I realized that for the first time, seeing it with the new colors. Anyway, great job.

LOL dude. I'm glad you figured it out, but I think I'll always be puzzled by people who think that Star Wars could possibly be considered a work of science fiction.

It's interesting that the very scene that made you aware of this is the very scene whose colors/very high contrast are so controversial. In general, people like a slightly less bright scene with more distinct colors - even Harmy. But the IB print it was being timed to had it as released here.

if you would post an NFO file! :D

I did see bilditup1's Post_495 but didn't pay much heed.
Since he mentioned Fox fanfare specifically, I just assumed it was the comparative lower fidelity of the 1954 Alfred E. Newman recording to blame.

Reading Harmy's thread, it sounds like hairy_hen got the problem sorted already.
Bravo!

I thought that also, but I've listened to that thing in fairly compressed format in the past, and it never sounded this bad. The rest of it it was hard to pick up anything, but then I never listened to this track before and don't really know how it 'should' sound.

TRACK 1) 5.1 70mm mix @ 448Kbps

The 640 version was affected also, I think, but to a much lesser extent.  I'm just going to redo them both.  For this reason, I'd request that nobody make a torrent of this or anything until I can get the corrected tracks uploaded.  The DVD5 is also affected, though that's already been out.

Really sorry about this, guys.

So I wasn't dreaming then?

Maybe I should hold off on any upload until the fix comes out for the 448kbps version...the AVCHD people shouldn't be deprived. They're the people least likely to want to deal with muxing and such. Thanks for the update, hairy! Sorry it didn't work out but we all appreciate having the film in hand a few weeks earlier and understand the pressure to get this done

Installed my LG blu ray burner last night only to realize its complete shit and won't read any blank media. Go go AVCHD until I can get another brand! Beware LG crap guys! I shoulda known lol

Nothing wrong with LG burners just get a replacement. If it won't read blank media that doesn't mean all LG burners are shit, it just means that the particular one you have is shit. You have a warranty, send it back.

In general I have found great success with them, and any time I ever had problems, it was because of the use of really shitty media (e.g. TDK DVD+R DL, or no-name cakebox shit). Verbatim/Taiyo-Yuden for DVD+R, and Verbatim for DVD+R DL is the way to go.

Beware that newer dyes cause problems for older drives often enough, or such has been my experience. I don't know much about BD-R media, so can't comment on that.

And if you know you're using quality media, an RMA would be a good move.

May just have to get a BD burner for this, though logistically this may be hard (no more SATA ports, and don't wanna get rid of my HD-DVD/BD combo drive).

It's a shame LG dropped HD-DVD read capability from their recent BD writers as my unit was only $85 and it otherwise would have been a good replacement for your combo drive.  Wouldn't have been difficult to include it as a bonus or cost them money.

I still have my original LG BD writer that has HD-DVD read capability, but that was like $400.

You could get an enclosure for a 5" drive and connect it via usb externally, if you don't have external eSATA ports available (or even a usb->SATA converter and SATA PSU for connecting a bare drive externally when necessary).

A bunch of those drives can actually be found on ebay, new or used, for less than $100, so I may go that route and then sell my combo drive or re-purpose it in some htpc project or something. Thanks for giving me the idea!

Still, if I'm gonna buy an internal drive, getting only 6x is depressing...so I may yet go the external 5" enclosure route or something like that.

How about THIS? I've converted the MKV to a Blu-ray via tsMuxeR without too much hassle and even got myself some fancy icons for my PS3's XMB using THIS little trick.

Laser: sadiq, thanks for the tips! (Especially that cool PS3 tip, heh.) Has the added bonus of being portable so I could use it with my laptop (in addition to not having to eat up a SATA port). I've had good experiences with LG burners, too (my HD/Blu combo is one of them).

finally got to watch this today, for the third time, in proper fashion (51" plasma, 5.1). my friends, this thing not only has to been *seen* to be believed...you've gotta hear it, too. I need to get a better sub, I've discovered.

^^THIS^^

As good as this looks on a laptop screen, there's really no substitute for watching it on a 50"+ screen.  I am green with envy hearing about people projecting this on screens over 100".

For me, it's 120". A pure white wall with borders that I made. Looks awesome. Photos here: http://www.blu-ray.com/community/gallery.php?member=keithabbott

That is awesome. I have an old Lumenlab projector (1.0) lying around that I used to project at around those sizes (in college) but the image quality is really not that great and anyway I don't really have a wall to project it onto anymore.

Thanks.  I got my Sanyo 1080p projector at BB pretty cheap. It's a lot cheaper investment than getting a TV let me tell you. You don't have to deal with the weight and giant stand, and replacing a projector is easy. They look better than you'd think. And my son and I play XBOX on the wall at 136" (I keep thinking it's 120" for some reason)! HOW FRICKING COOL IS THAT? LOL. Anyhow, so yeah...when I watched Harmy's version in the downstairs theater it looked amazing. It was just a bit choppy streaming as an MKV through a Wireless-G router. I probably need to download the AVCHD when it's done.

Don't worry...you'll have a wall one day. :)

Ha, thanks! All that sounds great! Actually, I was streaming to my RaspberryPi running OpenELEC (embedded OS w/XBMC) over coax (MoCA bridges) and it was STILL choppy, but this I chalk up to the Bluray-esque bitrate; I'm not sure the Pi could handle it. I have a local copy on my laptop so I just hooked that up, which isn't ideal because of what my TV does with PC sources, but wth. I should try streaming to my laptop to confirm that this issue is with the Pi/OpenELEC though. I doubt it's the network (MoCA is 250-300mbps standard) but my hdd is filling up (80gb left of 2TB) so that maybe it, too...

Oh and I just wanted to add something to that Obi-Wan scene: Let me explain, that I would have aesthetically preferred the scene the way it was on the last WP, so it was an internal struggle for me and in the end I decided to follow the reference as closely as possible, instead of my personal preference.

@Sunday: Wow! That's exactly what I want for my home one day, except for all the prequel junk, I'd replace that with some OT awesomeness ;-)

Yeah, I thought it was something like that. It's a hard choice to make...
