Raiders of The Lost Ark in IMAX!
Time

I haven't been disappointed by my local digital IMAX yet. Go in with an open mind, and have a good time!

LOL, I'm sure I will! I just meant, I know not to expect the equivalent of 15-70 IMAX (esp not Lincoln Square, which is apparently the largest screen in the country).

Dominic: did you see it in true IMAX then? Great story. In NYC it's gonna cost us an arm and a leg ($19, plus online 'convenience' fee). That's worth it for Raiders, I think, but in general it's highway robbery (except maybe at Lincoln Square. Still playing 'The Dark Knight Returns' there, if anyone's interested).

I'd love to get one of those posters but don't expect it from a big nyc theater.

'not gonna get the blu ray until its individually released.  Loved Indy the action hero, but the series overall is average.  TOD has aged poorly and dont care for KOTCS.'

TOD has a bad rep but it's the only movie where you truly feel, viscerally, just how evil the main antagonists are, and I really like that. I could live with the ridiculousness of Willie because of the evil of Mola Ram.

I, too, don't care for KOTCS, and think that RLM did a good job explaining why

Yes, it's for real. I sent the fixed 448 kbps track to Chewie and Harmy first, so they could integrate it into the DE and get it out there as soon as possible.  I'm going to post the links here once I'm done uploading a new 640 kbps version also.

The other had a lot of distortion on the high frequencies, and sounded like a bad mp3 in those parts.

@ Moth3r: I use a GUI for the Aften encoder since I can't afford one of the professional ones.  It has a lot of user-adjustable settings for things that should perhaps not be open to manipulation, and I seem to have inadvertently picked the wrong one for high frequency cutoff, so it came out screwed up even despite using the low pass filter.  This time I forced it to accept full bandwidth, with only the filter providing any cutoff, and it's much better than before.

When listening on hifi, the quality reduction at 448 kbps is somewhat noticeable, although it still sounds quite good.  640 is difficult to distinguish from the lossless source, and would be my recommendation for watching on a format that isn't restricted by DVD's 448 limitation.

Thank you very much for laying it all out for us, hairy. I'll be burning Chewie's DVD en masse and giving it out to my friends tomorrow (Raiders night)

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

I've downloaded what appears to be a version of the DVD5 that claims to have the fixed h_h audio off usenet. Listening, it is difficult for me to find the differences between the two. Is it legit? Can h_h shed light on what we should listen for?

If it's legit then maybe I'll begin seeding it and ask walkingdork to mark the old torrent as nuked.

What needs to be done is a comparison disc - heck, maybe I could be persuaded...

Would you mind? That would be awesome - a comparison not of v1 and v2, because that would be boring - but a comparison of the stock SE Blu-ray and the v2. That would be epic.

If I get help from the here for the scripts and audio-synching and aspect ratio and all, I think it's something I could tackle - slowly, anyways, as I really don't have that much expertise.

Why not encode a simple low bitrate avi or mp4, which could serve as a timing reference. DVD streams are problematic and this is all that would be needed to set a timing standard.

Sure, I can do that. But, I often see the lament over not having a decent looking version of the '97SE, so I figured I could as well upload the finished encode when I'm at it, so that people can remux it with whatever they want. The timing reference is the NTSC 2004 transfer, so whatever is synced to that will match my file as well.

Sorry for being off topic, I can start another thread if there's need for it.

Maybe we should begin another thread.

It sounds like, the best thing might be to send the the thing in the mail on a big SD card or HDD or something to someone who has the time, inclination, and expertise to work on the SE97 preservation to end all SE97 preservations. That's the Star Wars I grew up with, warts and all, and it's still miles beyond what came in its wake.

Seriously. The skintones, the lasers, the planets, the crawl...I don't know what the hell I'm watching. The only thing that wasn't a clusterfuck was the starfield, maybe.

And I'm not sure if WookieGroomer screwed around with the audio or what, but it seems like some alternate or new recording of the Fox Fanfare and Star Wars theme are tracked in. But beyond that...yuck yuck yuck yuck YUCK! Dynamic range compression totally run amok - no oomph to the SFX, and the music has been run through a V-shaped EQ. The sirens from the mono and stereo mixes on the Tantive IV at the same time...I just...it's mind-boggling.

What needs to be done is a comparison disc - heck, maybe I could be persuaded - like WookieGroomer's old Splitscreen discs of yesteryear. Then...they will know, everyone will know. Picasa albums, even if they're better for catching the details, are no substitute for seeing the totality of the changes all at once, in motion.

Just now I decided to fire up WookieGroomer's HDTV cap of Star Wars - m2ts streams (conveniently, for my PS3) at commercial (35Mbps) bitrates, which I haven't looked at in a very long time.

...

OMG. WHAT IS THIS BULLSHIT TRIPE!???

Folks, comparing the 2.0 to the 1.0 is simply not enough. You really need to plumb the bowels, get to the chewy, craptastic center of it all to really and truly realize what Harmy (and, really, hairy_hen) have done for us here.

This is like Andy Dufresne escaping from Shawshank Prison. Like Rocky Balboa beating down Ivan the Terrible. Like George McFly finally finding the balls to clock Biff. And, yes, like Vader destroying the Emperor.

Though I would prefer a version that wasn't about getting the 'film cut' (e.g. I quite like "The Emperor Arrives" as presented on the soundtrack even if it a good bit of it was cut out for the film). Still - it's amazing that you're talking this on! I'll be sure to post any bit of 'constructive criticism' I can come up with, and will try to help any other was I can!

I have it the original way on the 2nd disc in the extras section..

the reason I used the film insert, is because Williams wrote that, and intended it to be used in that spot, due to the original not being what the producers/director wanted.

I see; I was under the impression that it was tracked in from someplace else or just truncated a la Phantom Menace (which as we all know was butchered).

Also: sorry for not paying close attention to your initial description!

IMHO taking it down makes little sense. Being able to enjoy BD quality without having a BD player or having to download an inevitably larger, less 'desktop-friendly' file is a nice touch, so it would nice to have that option, but even if you don't think so, and can't tell the difference in quality between the AVCHD and the MKV, taking down what has already been released will just make it harder for people from here to get their hands on it for a short time; it's in the wild and will eventually make its way everywhere, and it's likely enough that the Bluray would itself be converted to MKV and shared in that format regardless (I have seen several different MKV torrents of the 1.0s).

I'm very confused at this point so forgive me for asking this. Is the v2.0 MKV (the 15GB version) only affected by the German and Spanish soundtracks out-of-sync, or is the MKV also affected by other audio issues? I hear other issues are being discussed but I'm not clear if it affects just the AVCHD ot the MKV also.

It is less immoral if you own more of the versions laid out here. But of course that has limits. The HD master of 2004 and DTV versions of the 1997 SEs has never been released on any home format (though I guess having cable sort of helps) and of course the LDs...are the LDs. And yeah, it's illegal anyway you slice it. Honestly, I do not care.

And dudes, chill. The 640kbps track has not been released, to my knowledge, and neither has the 448kbps. I just took another ac3 I had lying around and renamed it to make things clear.

The fixed German and Spanish tracks *have* been released (check teh) but an MKV is not forthcoming. You can have to use the same process I outlined in my post above.

Puggo - you're being extremely generous by even considering the 'no-remote' issue, and it would seem crass to tell you to drop it but...I'm not sure that targeting such a slim demographic (people who lost their remotes or don't have a DVD player that has an IR receiver built-in, which I've never heard of) is worth your time. But do what you will...
