Correct me if I am wrong but isn't there a story that he has even seen Ady's Revisited and that he was not offended? In any event, GL was not saying all those things about fan edited films in the NYT article. GL was saying that if fans who hate him can rework his films, why can't they accept that he can also?

That'd be really cool, but sounds farfetched...anyone have anything on this?

Otherwise: I endorse movimao's and Laserschwert's statements. I'm not even a real regular here but I never felt anything but welcome, and mostly, surrounded by people more knowledgeable than I am (in a good way)

You know, I was just thinking to myself earlier today, 'how was it that I came across this ot.com'? Rereading this list (specifically the above link) reminded me that it had to have been Bill Hunt at TheDigitalBits, a site I haven't thought about in ages...

I'm kind of amazed how many Lucas partisans there are out there though. It's bizarre as I don't often frequent these sites at all...

What is your home theater setup for watching Star Wars movies? (or what equipment would like to get if you could afford it/or dream setup?)

We won a 51" Samsung plasma at an auction last year. Completed the low-end Pioneer 7.1 (towers in the front) via several deals at newegg, and then got a cheapish Onkyo receiver with some nice networking support. I'm pretty pleased with the setup all in all.

And that plasma is just 720p, but I can't say it makes a bit of difference. I love the black levels and colors on these things. Viewing distance is 7, maybe 8ft away, but it's still quite nice if not overwhelming (that's what the sound is for...)

If your room is narrow, then I don't think the extra surrounds are necessary. 2 speakers, evenly placed and calibrated will fill that space just fine.

I sometimes think of using the bookshelves somewhere else and moving the primaries back, instead of at the sides, as the way the room is currently set up the viewing area is kinda narrow (though that's gonna change soon enough). I think it sounds fairly immersive as is, but yeah, much depends on how big your room is, and at some point, the extra two become overkill. I haven't tried to listen to 7.1 tracks in 5.1 down there just yet though.

It's two more.

LOL frink :)
So I thought that my receiver would matrix out another two channels from 5.1 sources for me, but that's not the case. Practically, 5.1 tracks then will sound the same. Modern 7.1 soundtracks sound really, really awesome, as does All-Ch Stereo (or equivalent) and Dolby PLIIx, but I think, depending on the space you're dealing with, 5.1 might be enough.
I would definitely recommend my speakers to anybody looking for a bargain but want a step up over HTiB and have the space for big (in the case of the center, really big) speakers. Pioneer SP-BS21-LR (bookshelves, 4" woofer) SP-C21 (center, twin 5.25" woofers), SP-BS51-LR (floorstanding, triple 5.25" woofers). The new models just came out (22, 52) and supposedly outclass these and look nicer to boot, but likely won't be as cheap as these for a bit longer; on the plus side the 22 center uses 4" woofers and is thus a bit less unwieldy.

P.S. have occasionally seen my old 2008 versions floating around in netsville - how people can still call a transfer 'high res' when it's been turned into an MP3 and is the 16-bit version is beyond me.

So I have uploaded these as part of ABC's old Soundtracks Salvage set to the spleen, but they are FLACs, and don't sound bad at all, even if they aren't 24-bit, of which there are many skeptics, including this guy.

Was going through correcting some of the misspelt tags and came across:

"10. Jabba's Sail Bail Barge (Part 2) [Source] (1:22)"

Is the world 'Bail' there intentional or some weird autocorrect or something that should be cut out?

Other than that I fixed "Jabba's Prisoner's" to "Jabba's Prisoners", "More Troube" to "More Trouble" and one or two other such obvious misspellings.

Ah OK, but am I correct to assume the other number omissions are mistakes?

If you think that in the future you may be releasing another track, maybe this isn't ready for primetime/release just yet. Skipping a track number is inelegant. With you permission I'd much rather renumber the tracks and specify that this is v 1.0 of the set or something.

'have a look at it if you don't think film can reach the level of perfection as digital.'

I'm sorry if I implied that film was inherently lower fidelity format for shooting on or exhibiting, or something like that, than digital - not really what I was going for. I haven't ever seen a truly flawless presentation of a film print, but I can appreciate the colors/detail and such are way different. The difference is stark enough in still photography, too...

And on reflection, you're right, of course, that PE and PSB don't exactly have that worn out quality. I don't quite know what it is then that draws me to it. Maybe I just have an affinity for this kind of grunginess? It's the closest I'll get, I think, to watching Star Wars at the Kent (Brooklyn's dirtiest, cheapest, ugliest hole in the wall)

Aside: all this wonky talk of the sound mixes reminded me of Scofield. Now that I understand a bit more about what it takes to properly sync sound to PE/PSB, I can better appreciate what it is we were asking of you and wouldn't dream of pestering you about it...

I actually disagree with both of you.  The original theater experience was with pristine sharp clean prints, often in 70mm, and often with stereo or surround sound.  That's how I remember seeing SW in the theater in 1977.  The dirty look came months or years later, when the prints had gotten so worn out they looked like PG and PSB.

For me, Harmy's is the closest to the theater experience I remember, and the filmic look doesn't have anything to do with being dirty and scratchy.  The PG and PSB are valuable as research material, since they are actual films from the year the movies were released, respectively.  I'm still a bit surprised that people actually enjoy watching them, but that's a cool bonus.

So the 16mm prints were only for home or something? That's not what I understood earlier; I thought that a good amount of people saw SW in 16mm in smaller theaters that couldn't afford 35 or something like that.

I didn't mean to imply that there was something inherent in the film format such that even if you had a pristine print it would look cruddy. Even on relatively new prints, you'll notice some minor flaws that simply won't show up on digital, and I think that's part of what Trooperman was referring to.

But anyway, I thought the prints of popular films got worn out, reprinted, and worn out again, and often enough that's what people saw. That is an experience that is today disappearing. Of course large format 70mm stuff is spectacular in a way the 16mm and a transfer of a 16mm print can never be. I personally don't know if I've ever seen a 70mm film, truthfully. 15-70 IMAX, yes (TDKR just recently), but 70mm - dunno. That's part of why I'm so keen on seeing 'The Master'.

So I think that really depends on what you grew up with, personally. When I went to a digital theater for the first time, to see 'No Country for Old Men', I was floored by some of the vistas. (It was actually the second time though, I guess, after seeing AOTC.) I have since come to appreciate the filmic, dirty look too, and am not happy where digital has gone since (there as a good series on this in the LA Times this past summer) but I don't think I'm distracted by perfectness as much as I'm just drawn, sometimes, to the imperfect. That's what I love about Puggo Grande and now PSB (saving actual viewing till mid this wk when I'm back home and have a solid TV to work with again). But for me, they couldn't replace Harmy's work, or tide me over till 35mm either - they represent an alternative and in some way much more authentic experience of viewing the films, at least if you're trying to approximate how it was experienced originally, which straight pristine video of course doesn't really allow you to do. It is greatly appreciated, sure, but I can't say that I prefer such an approximation of that experience in general.

Just started playing it...as someone else said up there, that bonus is really awesome. Also enjoyed the little 'making-of' thing, as I'm probably gonna be too lazy to ever give this thread the reading through it likely deserves. What can I say? You're a hero for putting yourself through all this tedious crap, especially wrt the audio. Thanks a lot!

It's late, so I think I'll be saving the viewing for another time, but can't wait! And I'm glad I know a bit more about the absurd amount of work that went into this.

As for preparing the files...unzip into some folder, start the torrent to point at the same spot as where you unzipped. Your client should recheck the files - if it doesn't, that means you started the torrent in the wrong directory. Mine matched up just fine, so there shouldn't be corruption (unless the files uploaded to newsgroups were to begin with).

'Sent them via Airmail too :/'

In my experience recently, airmail from outside the US takes quite a while to arrive. My suspicion is that they are not classified as First Class anymore once they reach our shores and thus take a backseat to everything else. But, "Airmail" sent abroad is classified First Class though (it's not even officially called airmail anymore) so that would be an odd inconsistency.

Moral of the story is that if you want something to arrive in the US double-quick, you'll want to look at Express Mail or private carriers like UPS and FedEx...but then, of course, you'll be paying a pretty penny...
