Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Lol, I suspect he was just trying to be courteous. It would only be a problem if someone actually charged for more than the cost of blank media and shipping.

I do agree with harmy though - 4 days is not 'practically impossible'. Get a spleen invite from walkingdork or dark_jedi instead of downloading it from this Czech fileshare site and it'll go faster (there are 12+ seeds right now)

WOW that looks phenomenal! Of course not better than a Harmy-style restoration for sharpness, but I don't think we can do better than this for straight GOUT. I can't wait! No money for Bluray burner and discs, but I can at least convert it into something smaller once they're released. I doff my cap to you, d_j!

97 Special Edition would be very nice!

Agreed as much as i loathe the 1997 special edition the colors and sound were not botched, and return of the jedi did not have Hayden and jar jar like in the 2004 cut.

It would also be nice to have all three cuts on Blu ray.

I would like a fixed or tweaked 2004 with correct colors, the 1997 laserdisc sound mix.  The closest thing i can get to that is Adywan's A New Hope Special edition in HD, but he removed Jabba and greedo shooting so it is not a pure preservation.

Ady had also made a ESB SE '97 in HD release. If any effort goes into tackling the '97 SEs by anyone (be it preservation or recreation or anything else), I hope RotJ gets tackled first.

Yep, I've got Ady's '97 HD; it's *amaziing*. REIVAX DTV cap of Star Wars is also pretty impressive (and through it I found out that my BD player can play region-free PAL DVDs, which is a nice added bonus). Only downside is the (understandable) burned-in French subs. But yeah, still waiting for a good ROTJ version. This is the Star Wars I grew up with, inferior though it may be, and I'd like to be able to watch 'em all without having to resort to inferior transfers like the 'Five-Star' or digging up old videotapes.

Big yes.  Selling his edits as well as those of other editors.

Yep, I bought one from'm. Didn't cost much but I should've known better.

Anyway, I watched parts of DJ's V3 and EditDroid again, and seem to understand what's going on here. ED is a lot sharper but frankly too sharp in a lot of places - look at the scrolling text and LFL logo for example. Also, because of this extra sharpness, there are these distracting 'fake grain' thingamabobs all over the place, in almost every scene. (Well zombie seems to think they're real but I don't think I've ever seen grain like this. Oh, and the dark levels I was complaining about seems to be due to a miscalibrated TV; ED was still darker but not absurdly so.) I think most ppl, myself included, would pay in sharpness for not having to deal with distracting artifacts like that, but I wish there was some in-between version. Maybe a blend is in order? Not sure how to do that...

Relevance to this set - seems to me both of these do the credits better. I don't know if this is inherent to 720p upscaling or because mattman's upscale really is that different from the other two for text.

I watched a few GOUT Death Star scenes from this set again. When you pay close attention to them, they're going to distract you, especially when cutting to and from cockpits, DS interior, and Yavin interior. But if you're just watching uncritically - ya know, like normal people - I don't think you can expect a better job than this without using a better 720p GOUT source than the one's you've got, and I don't think that exists.

So whether you go with this or straight upscale really depends on how much you're distracted/you let yourself be distracted by the GOUT stuff in here. Personally I don't think the tradeoff with a straight GOUT upscale where quality bumps - even with EditDroid, which is sharper, not distractingly 'jerky' - don't really happen is a very good one in comparison with this magnificence: EditDroid is dark. It's difficult to see anything in the cantina scene or inside the homestead sometimes in comparison to Harmy. The starfield at the beginning goes in and out, and opening crawl and scenes are not terribly sharp overall (horrible jerkiness in initial int shot of Tantive IV with 3PO and R2 - all GOUT upscales are like this). So again, this depends on preference, but frankly for most people, this should be the go-to set (among those that I've seen but I frankly doubt that'll change) unless you're in love with the credits or can't help but be extremely distracted/annoyed by the GOUT sourced Mos Eisley and DS scenes.

We've come a long way from ocpmovie (definitely my least favorite, although you gotta give him some credit for the idea)

So I just managed to get a hold of the EditDroid V3 version, and it seems that weirdness in the credits is inherent in the theatrical version, but it just looks worse for whatever reason in Harmy's set than in that one - which is a great version if you're looking for a purely GOUT-based project, even if it's only one film. DJ's set looks...well you know what, I think I'm going to watch it again to confirm my suspicions.

Oh excellent!

LOL, I've already found other useful shiznats that are impossible to find elsewhere, like EditDroid v3 which is still the definitive gout upscale according to zombie. Not to mention all this random documentary material, telecined anh &c. Definitely worth the $10. I bet I have enough HDD space to get everything I want within the month and then cancel the next month's subscription, only resubscribing when new must-haves come out

But I will do the upscaled HD... THAT is worth it.

Sweet! Sorry new technique didn't work out.

And yes, I miss 35mm theaters. Digital is not pristine if you have a dead pixel on the projector or morons left fingerprints on the lens, which happened to me tonight when I saw Fellowship of the Ring Extended with a few friends. Meanwhile, the whole experience feels deader :(

Um, no, that's dumb. This was completely awesome in comparison with the gout upscales I've seen, and I never asked for a do-over (and wouldn't dream of it after that ppt that showcases just a handful of shots). But the point of Internet forums is not to provide mindless automatonic praise, dude. Frankly, if you've got criticisms, even if they're wrong or off-kilter, at least they're proof positive that you've tried to pay the close attention that a project like this deserves.
