The 2008 '<strong>The Clone Wars</strong>' animated theatrical movie - a general discussion thread
Time

Well I took my son to the first showing today and he had a total blast. Was so cool seeing him sitting there making saber and blaster motions and sounds so I enjoyed myself too.

As for the film.Wasn't bad-quite enjoyable. You go in expecting ANH you'll be horribly upset. You go in expecting the worst movie ever you'll be pleasantly surprised.Great action of course and some good dialog here and there.Nice to see Christopher Lee getting more time as Dooku. Was a good experience overall as my son is just nuts tonight!

Price of admission:£7.80 2 matinee tickets

Popcorn and drinks:£6.00

McDonalds Clone Wars happy meal:£2.09

Taking my son to Star Wars in the cinema:Priceless.

Saga Book Boxset - The 6 episodes in one box !!!
Time

Absolutely ridiculous price for a set of bloody books. As far as an investment goes these will have very limited resale value as no-one will pay this money for a set of pictures signed by George. You want a real investment then invest in original production material and screen-used props from films.I had originally thought this would be a nice set to have and would have considered it at a couple of hundred. When I actually saw the price I was convinced there had to be an error on the site.I mean regardless of anyone's feelings towards Lucas, mine are immaterial,it just quite simply cannot be reasonably argued that this price is remotely justifiable.Bottom line.

Four thousand dollars.Good grief.

The 2008 '<strong>The Clone Wars</strong>' animated theatrical movie - a general discussion thread

As another thought I wanted to add this.Regardless of the merits of releasing this Clone Wars movie to the cinema, which as has been said is nothing new-LFL have been doing this kind of thing since we were kids too,and disregarding the fact that it is not (to an older fan such as myself) in my view a proper Star Wars film I am really very excited about the prospect of seeing this.

Why?

Very simple. When I came home after ROTS (which as some of you know I really love but that is neither here nor there and just my own opinion) I felt a genuine sadness at the thought that I would never be able to share a Star Wars movie-going experience with my son.I now have two boys, one four and one two,and they are both being introduced to Star Wars through my OOT discs. However my heart just lifted when I heard that this was getting a theatrical release.I dont care whether it is good or not. This one isn't for me it is for him.My father HATED Star Wars yet took me over and over and over to the cinema to see it.My son has the same enthusiasm for Star Wars now as I did when I was a kid and to see and share his excitement in the cinema with this will be just priceless.

Well anyway I was just thinking about this and thought I would add this.Bring on Clone Wars!!!!!

Fairly obvious you dont have kids Janskeet. My eldest son is four and while this may not be Star Wars as it was when I was a kid it is still going to be a real blast going to see it with him as he is really excited about it and anything that gets him that excited about SW is fine with me.

Calm down man.It is what it is-an animated movie.Dont want to see it?Don't.Not like someone is holding a bloody gun to yer head!

The Dark Knight Movie Discussion (July 18th, 2008)
Time

Great movie.Glad to have been proved wrong concerning my thoughts on Ledger's casting as he was just superb.Eckhart very good also.Great performances all round.

Been a bat-nerd all my life but my favourite depiction of Batman was always "Arkham Asylum","Killing Joke","The Dark Knight Returns",etc. This movie came the closest to my personal ideal portrayal of bats that I have yet seen.I really like Nolan as a director,Memento was awesome, but didn't really like Batman Begins(other than the scarecrow). This was fantastic though.

SPOILER:

Oh and the tumbler will forever bite as a batmobile. Was glad to see that fucking thing blow up.Batpod kicked ass.

I primarily focus on collecting pyro models from the OT and have also spent a lot of time talking with crew members and ILM crew guys who worked on the prequels.
Of the prequels some miniature explosions were used in the final sequence in TPM however 90% of the shots in the final battle were CGI.
However in AOTC and ROTS the only miniatures that were made were essentially blank "bucks" used to composite the CG models for basic shape and then they were finished digitally. No miniature ship models were used in either AOTC or ROTS.
That is not to say that miniatures were not used.As has been shown there were sections of Theed built in miniature and the hangar.Parts of Kashykk and Mustafar and Utapau were made in miniature and also some parts of the Opera in ROTS.
As also noted Jar-Jar was not 100% CG.Along with the moment noted when you see Binks juggling in Watto's workshop that was also an actor in the suit.Of course these scenes were also touched up digitally in post but started with physical actors and props. There were also full-scale static Battle Droids made for all three prequels and used at various points.
The reason I am fascinated with miniatures is that they are,effects-wise,the one constant throughout the six films in one form or another.Obviously the hero sabers are also a constant however either A)they have been destroyed or B) are in the LFL archives or C) are in private hands and cost a small fortune which will always be beyond my reach.Miniatures, particularly ship models, represent and reflect a dying part of the VFX industry and are therefore, for me,an essential thing to preserve.

opinions - how the release of the original to theatres was different than the new three films.
Time
Well....Star Wars.
Okay then.I was not old enough to see ANH in the cinema.I was three but ESB was one of first memorable cinema experiences and is burned in my brain.I can still FEEL the size and scope of those walkers!ROTJ was so much fun and I still have a great fondness for it.
However ANH is,and always shall be,my favourite movie. Not just favourite star wars movie but favourite movie full stop. What it boils down to is that,in essence,it is the perfectly balanced film. The characters-the wise old man,the black-clad villain, the callow youth, the rogue with a heart of gold and a princess. The clearly defined lines of good vs evil.Bravado, integrity and daring.Special effects to make your brain pop.Scale,scope,vision.Stunning cinematography the best example of which I give is always Luke standing with the smoke billowing after finding Owen and Beru's bodies and that rising crescendo from Williams.Stunning scene.
Most of all though, and on a personal level,it is just immensely inspiring. How the smallest band of people with integrity, heart and togetherness and right on their side can overcome the greatest of evils.I had a rotten childhood with just terrible things happen to me and Star Wars was a constant inspiration and guiding light for me.Luke Skywalker was and remains my absolute and complete hero (next yo my wife and sons and mother naturally).May seem odd,and some may see it as overblown or melodramatic, but the films and the character of Luke gave me inspiration and strength to continue at a really dark time of my life and continues to help me in this regard when life is tough (as I am ill and have been for some time).Need a lift?Watch Star Wars.Star Wars has taught me many great things that I feel have improved me as a person
It's why I collect the things I do-to get a deeper connection.
I am not of the opinion that the prequels were a complete waste of time and I prefer to see the good in them and there are things i like about them.As I have said here before (whilst worried about the barracking, lol) there is a naive innocent charm about TPM that appeals to me and my sons love it so that is good.I am not a fan of AOTC (I feel something went wrong there!) but I do however very much like ROTS.I wont go into some long-winded debate about why I like it I will just say that I do and leave it there.
I do NOT like the SEs.They are the one thing that Lucas has done that I very, very strongly disagreed with and is why I became a member here,It is original trilogy.com after all!I dont see liking the prequels for what they are and liking the OOT as being incompatible.I do however detest the SEs as they were, when it comes down to it,completely unnecessary.
Anyway though Star Wars (1977) stands as a benchmark in cinema, modern culture and in my life has had genuine significance.
Dont know if any of that is useful but there you go!

Indiana Jones IV

My point is that the Indy movies are not some gritty kitchen-sink Ken Loach affair. They are,by nature and essence,far-fetched.If you see the movie and dont like it-well that's another thing entirely and is fair enough. To start complaining before it's out and particularly about the feasibility of stories is,well,far-fetched....

Yes because an archaeologist scouring the world and battling Nazis for the lost ark of the covenant and then battling crazy heart-ripping,voodoo doll using (in India) cultists to retrieve three magic stones and then just for good measure finding the holy grail,no less, after searching through tombs in Venice while battling impossibly hot blond Nazi chicks and getting Herr Hitler's autograph in the process is SO completely feasible.
Damn come on!It's an Indiana Jones movie!Feasibility of plots and stories is not a concern,is it?
I just want Indy to save the day in a hat with a whip with some corking action and great sly quips.

Lucas to sue Star Wars designer
Time
Well the case is pretty much over and is expected to close tomorrow or at latest Wednesday.Ainsowrth is effectively sunk with testimony and evidence that it was in fact the late Liz Moore who sculpted the trooper helmet and Brian Muir who sculpted the armour.Andrew Ainsworth,as I understand it from people at the court, has come across VERY badly. This is,of course, unsurprising as he is a notorious liar.

Ainsworth is actually claiming he OWNS the rights to the design of the trooper helmets and armour and he is countersuing Lucasfilm for a share of the merchandising from the Star Wars films. He claims he not only fabricated but designed them into what we know as the stormtrooper.
Unlike Parks sabers where the term lightsaber, which is trademarked, was the contention the sabers Jeff Parks actually sold were different enough from the movie designs that he could get away with it by shortening to the term saber.SDS are selling exact replicas also using trademarked emblems without license.Honestly he hasn't a hope in hell of being able to prove that those designs are his intellectual property.

Lucas to sue Star Wars designer

The Lucasfilm license for props replicas has been picked up and will be run by a company called efx who will begin marketing pieces later this year.
I am aware of the differences in legislation between the UK and US however LFL I do not doubt will be able to prove that they own the design rights because Andrew Ainsworth did not design them.He is a manufacturer plain and simple who I believe has had some very bad legal advice and thinks he can win this case.
There are a number of people who were contracted to Lucasfilm who were responsible for the design of trooper helmets and armour.
It would be nothing short of a miracle if SDS win this.I can see the damages being lowered significantly certainly but SDS will not win.

Well as I understand it there are significant differences with the ear caps in particular.I am not anexpert on the subtleties of trooper helmets (ship miniatures are my area of expertise) however I have seen many discussions about the SDS helmets and more or less all are very skeptical to say the least at the claim of their origin.I believe there may also be differences in the back bottom of the helmet and also the frown.

Andrew Ainsworth did NOT design the stormtroopers-he manufactured them (using innovative and brilliant methods as he is a very talented craftsman). He is NOT selling stuff from the original molds-most,if not all,of stormtrooper experts will tell you there are simply too many differences from the originals for them to be from the original production molds. He IS breaching international copyright and trademark laws and using another company's intellectual property rights-any other company doing so would be nailed to the wall.Up until last year he was in an incredible display of foolishness using the trademarked LFL images of the Imperial cog and rebel alliance insignia on his helmets-another example of blatant copyright infringement.LFL are going after him,by the way, because he has made a substantial sum of money from these and other businesses, such as Master Replicas,Rubies et al have to pay licensing fees to Lucasfilm so why should SDS be any different?
He was given ample opportunity to avoid this as C & D orders were issued and he ignroed them.Way to piss off LFL!
Dont believe the hype in this case. The truth will come out.LFL already won this case last year in California and were awarded $20 million in damages and it was well justified and I believe the ruling will be upheld in the High Court.SDS really dont have a legal leg to stand on and there are other things that are going to come out in this case over the next while and the actual truth about the stormtrooper helmets will become clear.
Look for an interview on my site with Brian Muir after the conclusion of the case which will have some great insights into this case and his work on the film

I totally respect and understand people's reasons for not liking the PT but I got tired a long time ago of justifying why I liked them. The OT is my true love,ANH above all,but I have room for the prequels too.I like the two trilogies for different reasons.I would never dream of telling someone they SHOULD like the PT but I always got others telling me why I shouldn't.
And you're right.....that dang newfangled internet....lol

Well I am happy.I told my son that this was coming out in the cinema and his eyes just lit up and he actually BOUNCED up and down.So regardless of my feelings anything that gets my son THAT excited about Star Wars will have something special for me.
I have about three different versions of each original trilogy film on my PS3 and the two he wants to watch most are the unaltered ANH and the Adywan revisited ANH.He has good taste.
