I'd say its a mix of authorship, and that some edits alter the focus of the film. Plus it makes it alot simpler to differentiate between them!
I like the BIG sarlac idea bingo.
If the battle was not in a sandy region of tatooine, but more of a rocky chasm, the sarlac could be in some sort of deep cave, and climb out for a big reveal.
There could be a massive distance between the barge and beast, so we get a huge sense of vertigo the whole time.

It has been previously suggested that Sidious is replaced by Dooku in TPM, so the assumption is that Dooku is the Master, and Maul is the Apprentice (following the rule of the two).
Anakin kills Dooku at the opening of ROTS, and it is widely assumed at that point that the Prophecy of the Chosen One has been fulfilled.
At the Jedi Council, continues to sideline Anakin making him feel redundant and impotent. The War is over, the Sith are gone, Anakin has fulfilled his destiny, surely the Star Wars Trilogy is over right? Wrong!
In a big twist Palpatine reveals that he is in fact the Sith Lord, and he had many apprentices.
Not sure how Palpatine could make an effective argument for Anakin to turn to the dark side though.

it is likely ep VII will introduce a fresh protagonist. VIII he will lose a limb and IX he will triumph over something.

i can imagine leia as a head of state, and han as the grand admiral. the new republic they were rushed into building has fallen apart as quickly as it was pushed together. could they handle that? or would they become blind to the corruption?
luke however, fearing the task yoda set to him, could have just disappeared for the last 30 years. maybe with a sole apprentice. he see's the galaxy from the ground up on his adventures.
the new republic is crumbling already, is it time for the jedi order to return?
i'm sure GL once mentioned that the prequels would introduce a villain who would only be fully addressed in the sequels.
obviously this hasn't been setup, but i like what NeverarGreat is suggesting.
I'm imagining they will do something similar to Tron Legacy, with a new character/group of characters rediscovering certain OT characters, places and principals.
A disenchanted Luke being the Master, and coming out of 'retirement' in a seemingly peaceful new republic would be a good starting point. A New New Hope.

a problem i have with introducing a second apprentice character into the PT, is that people may then think vader is the father, not anakin.
if it could be made to look like mace turns to the dark side and becomes vader, then at least he is clearly NOT luke's father.

as oppose to following the grevious intro with the balcony scene, could it be followed by anakin's nightmare? at this point padme won't be pregnant, but then all of a sudden after the battle she will be. kind of the inescapable inevitable fate coming to play.

this has been floated a few times before. my personal favourite solution is the elimination of episode numbers/subtitle all together, and using the Typographic titles of the films enstead of the 'STAR WARS' for the beginning of the crawl. then you can just compose a SAGA without the hassle of numbers.

They're the closest we get to Spaghetti Star Wars films. The lightsabre fights are unbelievable. And all the men have amazing beards.

ALSO there is the possibility of having clone wars movies as EP I and EP II, with ROTS as EP III. I was wondering if you could create a PT just from CW episodes, but it might be a bit too WTF when you reach EPIV.
i really like the approach of jumbling TPM and AOTC into an Episode I, and ROTS into an Episode II or III. It gives the viewer the choice to have a clone wars movie as Ep II or a fan film as EP III.
